The Doof Thread

I know it's quite a bit away, but I was thinkin' about possibly headin' down to the land of Oz for Rainbow Serpent next year. I'd probably be headin' alone, so I have a few questions for all you doofers out there.
1.) What's the environment like? I assume its not much different than the american "psydoof" scene, in that everyone works as one organism partying out in the desert, but I was just wondering if there were any "australian specific" differences I should know about, if I choose to go.
2.) Since i'd probably be going alone, is this the type of event where it'd be hard to meet people? Although most people out here in the United States of Crap say its easy to make friends at a festival or desert party here, to be completely honest, unless you already know at least one or two people, its actually quite hard. People tend to make friends in their circles and never branch far out from 'em. As much fun as it'd be to just be at an Australian doof, I think it'd put a bit of a damper on things to be entirely alone for the length of the festivities.
3.) Will I get to pet a Koala?

Oh oh oh, and if you guys think there are better doofs in the final weeks of December/beginning weeks of January, ones better than Rainbow Serpent, i'd love to know! I just know the line up in the past for RS has been out of this world, and it gives me a reason to go to the land down under!

I have never been to RS so I couldn't tell you whether it is the "best" event to attend, but it is definitely the largest and so like you say, the acts it attracts are usually extensive. Personally I see a doof of 3000 or more being a little too big as with greater numbers you get different logistical problems (I think RS this year was 15 000??). Toilets and showers are two that spring to mind. Every one tells me that RS is very well run but even so I have been to enough festivals over the years to know big isn't always better. Having said that RS is on my to do list along with the Elvis Festival in Parkes. I'm undecided which we'll attend next year though.
There are plenty of other options. If you are here for New Years then without a doubt there are smaller doofs in pretty much all the states. There is always at least one a few hours from Brisbane and Sydney with plenty of others as far away as cairns. many of the RS acts will also travel to a few of the smaller ones around the country over the course of the Summer. By smaller expect anything from 1000 to 3000 depending on the site. Summer is not always the greatest time to doof in Australia as tempertures can get a little oppressive. 35 deg plus days take a lot out of you so be prepared for that. Also depending on the type of Summer we have had there won't be many fires if any. Although there are plenty of carpooling sites to get a lift through, if you are travelling solo you would be better off renting a camper van. That way you won't have to worry about a tent etc and if you spend a little more they will often have a seperate powered fridge.
If the doof is a more established one you can pretty much get away without bringing too many essentials if you are willing to pay for it. Food and water are usually abundant but it never hurts to bring your own. Also the ones around here don't sell alcohol so BYO is advised if you want a cold beer. The main thing is be prepared for extremes in weather. Most of the doofs I have ben to are in shady bush settings so you don't really have the extreme environment like Burningman for instance. Even so you can experience anything from monsoonal rain (floods) to blazing sunshine to even snow (particularly in Tassie) at that time of year.
You won't have any problem meeting new and interesting people no matter where you head. Just drop us a line.

If I were to go, i'd have to basically start from scratch there, only really knowing a the person id be staying with in Sydney, who isnt much of a doofer. I'd probably just take the easiest route in terms of camping equipment/supplies, so whether that means renting a camper there or just bringing a tent, it's all good. From the pictures that ive seen in this thread, camping doesnt seem too different to the desert parties/festivals out here. So long as you have some shade, you should be dandy. It really doesnt seem too different to American desert parties/festivals, just a bit more psychedelic and with hot aussie vibes/people. Major bonus, imo.
I definitely feel you about bigger not being better, i'll have to stick my head in here a bit more to see what's goin' on with the aussie doof scene as time progresses, as well as just look around to see who's playin' where and at what time (around when I would potentially be headin' down to the land of Oz).

One more photo for you...I'm not sure about the rest of you guys but we like to think that all that loud music and heavy bass scares the snakes away...seems like that's not so...
Also a good reminder to zip up your tent at all times (something I am normally vigilant about but as I didn't plan on using it this weekend, I didn't bother!)

Yep that's definitely a death adder, albeit a juvenile one. The oldies are much fatter than that. Definitely not a taipan. Taipans are gold/dark brown with no stripes and slender, with a satin-sheen, and are generally pretty aggressive. Death adders are red/brown with orange/yellow stripes, short and fat, and generally keep to themselves unless they feel threatened.
I am so jealous that I missed seeing this fella!!!

Elle is SUCH a doof dog!
Mummy was saying that she can tell it's doof time in the days leading up as they start packing the trailer and doing lots of cooking. On Friday evening she was super excited and didn't want to get out of the car in case we left without her.
Then she didn't bloody sit down for the whole drive - jumping and climbing all over everything (including me and Pete 3)!
She's big and dumb, but i do love that puppy
