i think its a bit ironic that the article posted above mocking american edm/rave culture is coming from uk "ravers" who themselves have been buying into a corperate/mainstream dance culture since the late nineties based around the likes of gatecrasher cream paul oakenfold judge jules mario picotto etc only a few degrees of separation between the two cultures just uk have been at it much longer. cashing in on the dance music scene

I beg to differ, I can go and see fairly large names both at the weekend and mid-week in medium sized venues for £3 or less. Most people go to these events and spend next to nothing on alcohol and just have a blast. No one is trying to look cool covering themselves in beads and everyone is there to have fun.

Methinks a certain Irishman is at it ;)

For sure we have plenty vile shite commercial "raves" over here. We also have rip-yer-face-off freeparties still going strong. I know cos even out here in the sticks they ain't so rare. Admittedly rural Wales was always a hotbed for quality parties...

Spiral Tribe - Live in Berlin '94

(not in wales... but that's hardly the point)

Only mouseheads in sight were if you're on a hefty dose of MDA %)

Side note (as I tend to mention it frequently anyway) - used to score me acid off Spiral Tribe (allegedly)

The shit here in Washington is so fucking commercial it's not even funny, but there is no MDMA here anyway so you can't really blame them.

It's not like aren't some BANGING fucking parties here and all around the world though, the best ones just don't want the publicity so they can keep the dubstep ragers out. Hell, there are even some amazing parties in South Africa, but you don't hear about those ones either ;)

@Cz_x

i dont know if your in the uk or us but £3 to see big name acts sounds like 1982 club door prices lol
i started my clubbing career as a teenager in 1994 in dublin ireland in a very underground and famous club but admission was generally around the £7 mark and was £12 when carl cox dj'ed there in 1994.
now by the year 2000 it would probably cost a club thousands to get the likes of someone as prominant as him to perform.
btw" the asylum" the dublin nightclub i am refering too from 94 didnt have an alcohol licence so was able to stay open all night. it was an absolute drugs haven though for mdma/acid/speed/coke. this was the underground dance scene im talking about its exactly the way i liked it and wanted it too be.the police didnt share the same vision as me though and after a series of raids on rave nightclubs and a few ecstasy deaths clubs like this were shutdown for good and the propriaters were brought to court.
then the more watered down superclubs appeared in the late nineties
i know which scene i prefered B-)
drugs and dance music have been connected from the birth of the dance scene no point pretending otherwise

@shambles

I know all about castlemorton and spiral tribe they played a gig i was at in the devils glen in the dublin mountains in 1995.
DIY and spiral tribe crusty dreadlocked promoters ftw lol.

I thought there where a few new clubs being built / in the pipeline for New York, to try and get your club scene in shape.

I heard of Sankeys opening up shop, also Space Ibiza brand is ment to be opening one, you never know theres still time for you yet. Cant remember what the other clubs are, but I heard it was upto 5?

You cant deny though a lot of those points made in that article we witness here first hand in ED. Teenagers posting that after they took there first molly they are a new person and are so engrossed into the "EDM Scene" they just cant wait to start exchanging candy etc, its prevalent in almost every topic.

I think in certain clubs its still pretty cheap, £9 I paid to see carl cox last year at sankeys I would hardly call that expensive and hes quite "a big name" in the industry. Still there are loads of small clubs with good and unheard of DJs hosting quality nights week in week out.

If you don't have to fight your way past a gazillion k-holed krusties kooking ket up over a fire you ain't never been to a rave =D
one of my favourite old skool mixes was of dj jack diy tent castlemorton common 1992. where they came from all over the uk and had an illegal rave festival for a week for 30,000 people democracy in action lol.

i am proud to come from a country where you would get your head kicked in for trying to start a cuddle puddle hugging and swapping beads lol sounds like something 10 year old girls would be into.
i prefer to act like a man when clubbing call me a boring

Was invited by some of your fellow countrymen to a nice-sounding party a year or so back. "Commercial" in the sense it was publicised but still looked good. Is high on me ToDo list to make it over the waters to visit me Celtic Countryfolk sometime. I hear y'all have the good drugs %)

And plenty Guinness. Stereotypes be damned, I loves me Guinness <3

Cos they're possibly the greatest "rave band" ever...

KLF - Live @ Helter Skelter '89

Oh fuck yes :D

I rarely log in and post in these forums, but this is the most absolutely bullshit article I have ever read :|, not to mention it's completely judgemental of people that you probably don't even know. There are plenty of true electronic music enthusiasts (or ravers if you want to call it that) and plenty of great EDM events in the states <3. The author just sounds like he's trying to show off his big dick because he pops lots of pills and know's what good music is. Damn dude if people want to listen to music with a filthy drop, then so be it. I like all genres of EDM and have a great time at events in the US.

If you live local to a place with quite a large scene it's pretty common to see Local DJ's play all the time. They're always 11-4am events and the venues are only about 300-400 capacity. They always have killer sound systems though. Don't get me wrong, I love going to larger events but the vibe at the smaller ones are always so much better.

you are spot on with that shout brother B-) a good gig is only dependant on the dj and what tunes he brings to the table.
some of the best and most memorable club nights i remember were in at 400+ size venues listening to a talented and tuned in resident dj.
i have paid £25 to see judge jules and oakenfold in ireland year 2000 in much larger venues was good too but not the same vibe as more cosy gigs

Does MDMA not "love you up"?

@freehugs

hahaha ur winding me up lol.
ok truth here i dropped my first e in a rough rave club in 1994 and was warned going in not to punch any random stranger if they hugged me because they were new to e and loved dup lol.
well i felt that amazing love and euphoria they described that night especially when the dj dropped this track

http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=nhjT73o8GKw&desktop_uri=/watch?v=nhjT73o8GKw

i was emotional and overwhelmed i admit it lol its lovely when its all new but that was 19 years ago im 34 now still take mdma and enjoy it but loved dupness stopped years ago unfortunately

Does MDMA not "love you up"?

If y'all can't see the difference (a) I pity you and (b) you can at least hear it and see it... <3

UK Clubrave circa '89...

UK Raverave circa '91

No competition <3

Not saying all US tunes and parties are shite - that would be silly... but my gollygosh y'all don't half make us all wince at what you so kindnly gifted us and then we showed y'all how to do properly ;)

We only bring it up cos we loves ya and want you to live up to your potential again <3

^ Please. The people in the UK don't know a rave from a toddlers birthday party compared to what they have in Holland/Belgium

If you guys from the UK think we want to be anything like you... well, I'd say your off by a few hundred miles ;)

In other news, I'm going to get so fucking munted (region appropriated term used) on MDA tomorrow it's not even funny

@freehugs

im not having a go at american ravers im all about the love dup ecstasy vibe.
i dont think i ever hugged a stranger in a club definately hugged different girlfriends when full of mdma.
ive had conversations with other loved dup newbies back in the day "this music is great...i love you man lol"
at the time i was so loved dup i loved everyone in the world.
you get over that i would prefer to retain my composure and dignity lol
