The Cigarette Thread

Bill on plain packaging goes through today. What does every one think?

I'm all for it personally, cheaper smokes for me and less incentive for a younger person similar to me to start smoking. When I was a kid it was all about trying new brands and finding the best cigarette so that will stop now at least :)

^^ are you sure their gonna be cheaper?

TBH, I couldnt give a fuck about the pain packaging.. smokin in Australia has already turned into a joke in recent years, dont think it could get much worse than it already is.. Think it might be time to quit :\

^ I thought the ciggie companies openly stated they would reduce the cost of cigarettes to retalliate, give it 3 months though and the Government will just tax hike it back to where it is, if not beyond...

Yeah well that's true. Probably as soon as the tax hike comes along, tobacco companies will raise prices as well and we'll end up with even more over-priced cigarettes.

I heard they were gonna be cheaper but not sure. Would be nice.

Yeh I'm pretty sure I read somewhere the government would increase tax excises to match any decrease in product price... more money for the government and no change in price for the consumer. I doubt it'd even take them 3 months d_m... :/

First pack of cigs i ever bought were $2 Aud and in Greece.

$1 a stick for what should really be .10-15c a stick.

Im seriously pissed off about the packaging laws too.

God, I miss the days of indulging in the finer things in life = winnie gold's :) ....but training and intense physical activity 7 days a week has put a stop to that! Mmm the temptation of the shiney gold package with a witty remark to contemplate on and the gold ol' cheap aussie smokey taste haha

I find cigarettes very bland to smoke, they don't seem to have any distinctive flavour to them. I started smoking rolling tobacco instead and find it a much more pleasant smoke.
I usually turn down a cigarette if offered as I feel there is no strength to them,if I smoked a cigarette I would still need to smoke a roll up afterwards to satisfy the craving.

[NZ] Health board cracks down on smoking ban breaches

A father's frustration with medical staff smoking on hospital grounds has led to a district health board bumping up its enforcement of the no-smoking rule.

The Auckland District Health Board announced last night that it would be more strict with its staff who smoke after several patients complained of workers breaching the no-smoking policy on hospital grounds.

One of the main complainants is understood to be a man whose asthmatic daughter - who regularly gets treatment at the Starship children's hospital - had been suffering because of smoke blowing inside the doors from staff, patients and visitors smoking out the front.

It is understood the man is taking legal action against the district health board for failing to properly administer its smoking ban and is to be in court tomorrow.

Auckland City Hospital, the Starship and Greenlane Clinical Centre are all smokefree sites.

However many people, including staff, have regularly been breaching the smoking ban.

In a statement released last night, chief executive Denis Jury said the board had decided to take a stronger stance on the ban.

"Staff and patients are telling us smoking on site is a problem and we have checked and found compliance with the policy is not what it should be," Dr Jury said.

"We've noticed an increasing number of breaches - particularly at our Auckland City Hospital site."

Hospital spokesman Mark Fenwick said the father's complaint had been the key factor in the board's decision to take action.

"Essentially, we agree with him. He's got a fair point."

Mr Fenwick said the board understood that the man wanted to make moves to change the country's smokefree legislation to include hospital grounds.

At present, the Smokefree Environments Act states that all school grounds and early childhood centres are smokefree.

Other premises, such as bars and restaurants, are smokefree indoors.

Extra signs and an expansion of programmes such as the Better Help for Smokers to Quit programme and the nicotine replacement therapy for patients are some of the board's initiatives to enforce the smoking ban.

The executive director of nursing, Taima Campbell, said: "Currently, under the Better Help for Smokers to Quit programme, nicotine replacement therapy is only available to patients who are smokers.

"But we are exploring how we may be able to expand this to include family members and visitors."

I agree, however if you have a local tobacconist he and/or she should stock a wide variety of imported cigarettes, Nat Sherman does a great range of natural filtered cigarettes with a great taste, long burn time and conventional packaging and styles, along with a premium line.

A change of pace can also be found at your local Chinese shop in the form of a number of 20 packs for under $14.00 Each.
Double Happiness, panda's, lesser pandas, Yuxi and some others provide a good change of pace and quality flue cured tobaccos with a unique taste (however the sources of labor and conditions of the tobacco farmers is commonly near below poverty line)

Good cigarettes are out there, Europe and Asia are the mecca for niche brands.

I liked the Marlboro Wides, but the Company (not the CIA, Marlboro - what, they're the same?) discontinued them.

They were of a larger diameter, but shorter thant the normal Marlboro.

My dad just got back from Thailand for a visit (he lives over there) and brought pack a carton of Dunhill Reds and Camels. I'm in tailor heaven, for a few days at least. :)

^^ what are the Thai tailors like? I found the Indonesian Dunhill Blues were very nice :D I actually prefered them over alot of Aussie tailors.. and the price!! ;)

Anti-smoking message spreads across world

THE tobacco industry's multimillion-dollar campaign against the federal government's plain-packaging measures comes amid evidence of a growing distaste worldwide for smoking.

A World Health Organisation report issued yesterday on the ''global tobacco epidemic'' finds that more than half the world's population, or 3.8 billion people, live in countries with at least some form of anti-smoking measure such as health warnings on cigarette packs, cigarette taxes or anti-tobacco media campaigns.
There are 425 million people in 19 countries - about 6 per cent of the world's population - where bans on tobacco marketing are in place, the report says. Nearly all of those people are on low or middle incomes.

WHO says the tobacco epidemic continues to expand because of tobacco marketing, population growth in countries where tobacco use is increasing and the ''extreme addictiveness'' of nicotine.

''If current trends continue, by 2030 tobacco will kill more than 8 million people worldwide each year, with 80 per cent of these premature deaths among people living in low- and middle-income countries,'' the report says.

The drive against smoking ranges from videos in India showing patients who have had radical surgery to their mouth and throat as a result of cancer caused by chewing tobacco to images in Uruguay of mouth cancer, which cover most of the tobacco packaging and make Australia's warning images seem tame.

In contrast to Australia's disease-dominated campaign messages, the Uruguay campaign also focuses on a social evil: ''You smoke, you stink. Smoking causes bad breath, tooth staining and unpleasant smell.''

Really nice actually, I have Camels and Dunhill Reds. I prefer the taste of these of both of the supermarket kind here, not sure why the difference though. :)

I haven't had a Sherman's for over a decade. One cig lasted almost all night - they were forever going out between puffs. Right now, I'm looking at a crumpled 3 month-old pack of emergency 'H. Upmann's 1884 (Cuban, sell-by date) purchased in Negril - and quite the uninspired white and listless yellow pack it is, with ''muestra inteligencia, dejar de fumar' in tired letters on the back. Right. Not a word of flavor praise anywhere. I smoked only one and can report they scrape the very bottom of the Third World-tasting barrel... 'Muestra inteligencia, no te gusta de fumar esos...'
