We adapt, so new stimuli feel normal and less euphoric after a while iirc.
Maybe there's a tolerance in everything.

I don't see what's "higher" about it.
You are being high on endogenic chemicals if you can tolerate being woken up every few hours during night and still at the same time can function during the day and feel like going through wonderful time.
I am pretty good example of this getting used to phenomenom as after few years we had our daughter we ended up divorcing.
There is an epidemic of the metonymy "function". Machines made by man, function, but not men. It's an insult to even refer to a human in that way...when someone gets cancer do you say "he broke down"?
There's also expressions like "thinking positive". They are killing me with this one. Thinking is a rational process, it involves reason, comparison, analysis, where you often weigh in the pros and cons...there are positive aspects you consider and also negative aspects you must consider for you to think rationally. A positive thinker is most likely an idiot who never takes into account what can go wrong.
Also, be aware of people who speak in parables and use uselessly complicated vocabulary, such as "it is my understanding that" or "that's not exactly at the forefront of my thoughts". People who talk like this are idiots and can only impress other idiots. An intelligent person speaks in plain language and, only if he has no other grammatical choice, uses that language.
