pushups are very dynamic

depends on your goals

relative to the goal, i could make 10 pushups more productive than 100 pushups done with a different tempo and level of force

also positioning of the hands, and how the hands are used make a world of difference.

knuckle pushups? mantis/tiger/finger pushups? breath control pushups?

when it comes to athletics, americans are always obsessed with big numbers, never obsessed with the underlying technique or purpose. imo 1000 pushups in a day = youre doing it wrong

pushups: quality vs quantity.

I have seen some very fit athletes do 60 seconds pushups. 30 sec down, 30 sec up, all smooth and controlled.
 
I definitely agree with your last statement. I like the "three minute challenge." Try to do as many as possible in three minutes, breaking the sets into whatever is most effective.

Cause the Eastern Europeans and Russians never cared about big numbers? The Germans? They took so many steroids their steroids took steroids.
