Members of rival motorcycle gangs the Rock Machine and the Rebels were issued move on notices at a music festival in Perth on the weekend.

Police say members of the rival gangs had words during the Supafest concert at Joondalup Arena.

The men were issued with move-on notices and left the premises.

Tensions between the two gangs are high.

A member of the Rock Machine has been charged with the attempted shooting murder of Rebels state president Nick Martin.

Rock Machine Bikie charged with attempted murder of Nick Martin stabbed in prison

A Rock Machine bikie charged over the attempted murder of Rebels president Nick Martin has been brutally attacked in prison, stabbed in the neck with a broom.

The 30-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was seriously injured during a brawl at Casuarina Prison on Saturday afternoon.

A Department of Corrective Services spokeswoman last night confirmed the man had been wounded some time between 4pm and 5pm and had been taken to hospital for surgery.

It is not clear if the broom handle had been fashioned into a dagger-like weapon or if the bloody incident was captured on the jail’s closed circuit surveillance.

The violent stabbing attack is the latest flashpoint in an ongoing feud between the Rebels and rival bikie gang, the Rock Machine, in which a tattoo shop has been firebombed, bikies assaulted and a massive stash of explosives seized in recent months.

``Prison officers responded to an incident at Casuarina Prison,’’ the Corrective Services spokeswoman said.

``It is alleged the prisoner was assaulted with a broom and required surgery for his injuries.’’

``The prison and WA Police are reviewing the incident.’’

The injured man remains in a stable condition in hospital, but authorities said they could not confirm which hospital the man had been admitted to for security reasons.

A Department of Health spokeswoman said she could not confirm details about the injured man.

Sources say there is no doubt the assault is related to the bad blood between the Rebels and the Rock Machine bikie clubs.

The injured Rock Machine bikie stands charged with attempted murder of Mr Martin, wilfully destroying evidence and possessing an unlicensed firearm.

Police allege he went to Mr Martin's home in Attra Place, Balcatta just before 9.20pm on March 18 and fired a gun twice in a drive-by shooting.

One shot hit Mr Martin in the elbow while the second struck a motorcycle parked at the house. He was not seriously injured.

The accused then drove to Bicton, where he set a car on fire to destroy evidence, police allege.

Police have repeatedly warned that the Rebels and Rock Machine gangs are at loggerheads since the Rock Machine set up its national headquarters in WA about 18 months ago and a Rebels member who was removed from the club later joined the Rock Machine.

While police say the feud relates to a turf war over drug distribution networks, those close to the Rebels say the issue is not drug-related but merely a ``clash of personalities'' between members.

The Rebels, which has about 50 members and four clubhouses in WA, is Australia's biggest bikie gang. The Rock Machine, a Canadian-based gang, has about 20 known members and a clubhouse in Myaree.

Casuarina Prison is Perth’s main maximum security jail for male prisoners but also houses minimum and medium security inmates.

I know this is a little off topic to the OLMC's but relevant to the racial discussion, I think we are actually forgetting that various Asian triads / gangs are basically laughing at us all and making a killing from all races involved in the Aussie underworld but they are just better at being inconspicuous and play off our narrowminded views and dominating the industry from the being our major passageway. I do not affiliate with anyone or any group, I roll up triple OG n cap bitches! But seriously get a grip we are fighting over who is dominating and forgetting who supplies us, so unturned our OLMC's and"gangs" are just some other big dudes bitch, so we all bitches really :) haha

yeh the thign about the asians here is they dont go killing each other, sorta work together, (not saying that it doesnt occur)

Where as if you go to asia, they have teh same problem there, where they control turf n kill each other n stuff.

I guess the asians and other crime groups, mafias cartels n what not, try to not do stupid stuff like bash each other and draw attention to themselves, although im sure the police are monitoring them in some aspect, however they probs focus more on the ones that attract media attention, as that way they calm general public perception of police actually doing stuff

Also, the higher echelons of drug trafficking are smart enough to pay the right people. The bikies are the lowest of all organised drug dealing groups. They do stupid things to extract as much wealth as possible within their (relitively) meagre means.

You only have to look at things like the Sydney airport fiasco to realise how dumb they really are. Cartel's and security agencies and the like make people dissapear without a trace, not bash people on camera in front of hundreds of witnesses.

People said that about the HA in the USA and Canada years ago. But doing really dumb things like public brawls, actually helps these peoples careers. They gain power and respect with shit like that.

The HA used to be bums who rode bikes. In the 1990s in montreal they sold hundreds of keys of blow every week.

The thing about bikies are most of them are bums or have normal jobs only very few of them are actaully really rich but thats not because of the bikie gang its because they already have connections and then later decided to join a bikie gang.Have any of you guys been in a bikie clubhouse it has a pool table and an old ripped up coach with piss and vomit stains on the carpet so where the fuck is all this money that the media tries to make them out to be as powerful as the mafia.

Bikies also dont have balls like cartels.Bikies will do a driveby and thats it which is fuckin useless.Even the melbourne crims during the gangland wars would knock each other off.Williams or the carlton crew could of easily taken sydney because their boys were actaul killers not show ponies with tattoos on their necks but when shit hits the fan they shit themselves

Police say Mercanti, who is due for release from Casuarina Prison on August 2, is a target in the feud between his club, the Finks, and former gang the Coffin Cheaters.

Assistant Commissioner for specialist crime Nick Anticich would only confirm that police considered the bikie a "potential victim" and would "monitor" him, but The Sunday Times has learnt he will also be offered police protection.

"Some believe he is a dead man walking," a police insider told The Sunday Times.

"Not only is he at loggerheads with the Coffin Cheaters, but the problem has got worse since he's been in jail. He's upset the Finks because they've essentially lost their clubhouse.

"How do you square the ledger? It's all about tit-for-tat retaliation."

Another source said there was a good chance Mercanti would move interstate, possibly to South Australia or Queensland, where there is a greater presence of Finks bikies.

Mercanti has been serving a 28-month jail sentence after he was found guilty of assault causing grievous bodily harm to Gregory Fistonich, by throwing a punch that broke the victim's jaw at Geisha Bar in Northbridge in May 2007.

But his sentence was extended after he refused to answer questions from an Australian Crime Commission examiner as part of a police investigation into the theft of thousands of dollars from trust accounts for the daughters of murdered Coffin Cheater Mark Chabriere and his associate Richard Vickers.

Tensions between the Coffin Cheaters and the Finks have been running high since 2008 when Mercanti was bashed and expelled from the Cheaters before he turned to the Finks.

Since then, fears have mounted that the simmering bikie war could erupt into a full-scale showdown.

In October 2008, the war flared when a sniper shot Finks member Stephen Wallace in the shoulder as he rode along Great Eastern Highway, Wooroloo.

Police believe the shooting was a bid to harm Mercanti who was riding in the group.

And last year, Coffin Cheaters and Finks bikies clashed at the Kwinana Motorplex, leaving Wallace with three severed fingers and another Fink, David Marrapodi, shot in the leg.

Mr Anticich said police would speak to Mercanti on his release but he would not comment on any measures or protection that would be offered.

"There is obviously a history of conflict between him and various members and to date that is unresolved," Mr Anticich said. "We are aware of his release and obviously our concern is both with him being a potential victim and a perpetrator. We are trying to monitor it as best we can."

Police would continue to relentlessly track outlaw motorcycle gangs and established criminal networks.
