Most psychedelics are pretty dose sensitive especially on the low to mid-range end of the dosing scale. At higher doses the relationship between dose and intensity is a lot less pronounced. Very light doses usually aren't all that psychedelic and mostly just give you a taste of the body high. At a certain dose you start getting the full range of effects (altered mood and mental state, visual distortions, body high, etc.), and at some point as you ramp the dosage up, you eventually stop getting much bang for your buck by adding more.
I've never tried to abort a trip myself; I find it's generally more productive and ultimately more enjoyable to work through a difficult trip than to try to KEEL IT WITH FIRE. That said, if you want to have a pharmaceutical safety net, a fast-acting benzo would be your best bet. I think it would be best to leave it with a trip sitter if you have one rather than holding onto it yourself - if you start to have a difficult time, trying to decide if and when to pop the benzo could stress you out and make it worse, and there's no guarantee the benzo will calm you down sufficiently. If it does, it'll probably mute the rest of the trip quite a bit.
2C-B or 2C-C would be a nice, gentle introduction to psychedelics, but IMHO the 4-substituted tryptamines are the best place to start if you want a full taste of psychedelia. LSD is great too, but something shorter lasting seems preferable for a first timer.
