The Best Anti-Depressant (Pref. SSRI) For Anxiety (Doc appt at 3pm EST)

My Doctor has me on 1 mg of xanax 2X day and 1mg Klonopin at night. But he wants me to decide what anti-depressant works the best for anxiety. I have already tried....

Elavil - 1 Mo (10mg)
Lexapro - 5 Mo (10mg entire duration)
Zoloft ~ 4 Mo (50mg 2 months 100mg 2 weeks 150mg 2 weeks 200mg 3 weeks
Lamictal ~ 4 Mo (25mg 2months 50mg 1 months 100mg 2 weeks)

What is the best in your opinion drug to use on top of Benzodiazpines for anxiety, it doesnt really have to be an SSRI.

Thanks for your help. advice. hurry only have 2.25hrs
 
I've wondered this too because my dr wants me off the benzos and on the prozac, so speak. I just hate the idea of losing my sex drive for good (like what happened to my mom) since I already have ED at a very young age...

That's why my dad left my mom, though I guess every family is dysfunctional somehow.
 
Paxil is pretty good for that, you definitely don't want to stay on benzos for too long. Benzos can be great once in a while if your anxiety level rises, but trust me, benzos are the LAST thing you want to be doing long-term.
 
SSRIs seem to be more dependant on the person taking them than most drugs. In almost every case it's really about finding something that works for you, not finding that one objective cure-all that works for everyone.
 
I used to use Cymbalta with Clonazepam. Now I don't take any SSRIs. Lithium with Clonazepam works well, but Cymbalta worked the best out of all the SSRIs I took.
 
GM is right. The effects of SSRIs (as with many drugs) are highly subjective. What works for some might not work for others. Personally I've never found an SSRI that worked well for me without giving me nasty side effects I couldn't tolerate. You're going to have to find out through trial and error.
 
Cymbalta is an SNRI (serotonin and noradrenaline uptake inhibitor.) Definitely, a bit different.

SSRIs have both scientifically and anecdotally evidence to suggest they vary in effect dramatically from person to person (as stated above.)
 
the best anti depressant ive ever used has been Zoloft, but it depends on the person totally.
 
It's really personal preference and it takes awhile because SSRI's take weeks to take effect.

For me a combination of Citalprom(Celexa) and Clonazepam cured my anxiety and depression. To each his own.

What is the extent of your anxiety? I show symptoms for very very light depression (nothing compared to anxiety problems I get such as insomnia, tremors, and racing thoughts). I was just prescribed Celexa and I'm a bit confused as to why. I just saw a psychiatrist that specializes in addiction therapy and I told her another addiction therapist I was seeing said I fit the profile for generalized anxiety (which I believe is true). From what I understand, Celexa is an anti-depressant that can help w/ anxiety. I know it takes days/weeks to start to work and I know it's something I'm going to most likely be on for at least 6 months if not a year. What I'm worried about is it not helping things like insomnia and panic attacks. Why did your doc prescribe you the Klonopin in addition to the Celexa? I am addicted to opiates and my psychiatrist knows this. She asked if I ever abused benzos and I told her no (which is true). Will my history automatically prevent me from getting prescribed a benzo or at least something to help me sleep in addition to the Celexa? How effective is the Celexa for anxiety (anyone with personal experience/knows someone with experience)? Sorry to hijack the thread, but it seemed like an appropriate place for my first post.
 
Mirtazapine (Remeron) helped me with both anxiety and depression. And when I went off it, there was no need to taper down to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
 
^ Yea I would either try Mirtazapine (remeron) or a combination of DHEA and tryptophan (5-htp). They all should relieve your anxiety and depression effectively.
Bupropion is also really good for depression and you get immediate relief rather than having to take it for weeks feeling like shit at first until you get results.
 
it all depends on you but i have heard paxil is the best for anxiety but, cymbalta is one of the newer anti depressants out with less side effects and it has been my favorite out of the ones that i have tried.. and i've tried more than a few.
 
my favorite drug for anxiety is moclobemide. obviously this is too late.

i dont like the SSRIs

you might consider Stablon (tianeptine) , which is supposedly the most anti-anxiety antidepressant out there.
 
hey, i thought i chime in and post my cenario, i hope it helps your case.

I suffer from general anxiety, with a bit of claustrophobia and here is what i am on:

20mg Cipralex once daily and a dose of Ativan when needed.

Nothing recreational about that, but it works well for me. Without the Cipralex i would consume 10 or more mgs of ativan a day to keep it at bay, so yeah, that stuff seems to work. I traded it for my sex drive though. I can still get it up and stuff, but the desire is just not there anymore.

Cipralex is a SSRI, and the active ingerdient is Escitalopram Oxalate.

I hate SSRI's with every fiber of my being, but Cipralex seemed to be the only one that worked for me. From what i hear it's a fairly new antidepressant.
 
TRAMADOL!, jk, certainly is the most recreational one though, but as for legit SSRI's I've heard a lot of good about cymbalta a.k.a Duloexitine (definite SP) HCl, but other people can't determine this for you cause everybody is VERY different when it comes to anti-depressents.

If loss of sex drive is a concern and you have had problems tolerating certain ssri's then you should try Bupropion (Wellbutrin).

Bupropion is an atypical antidepressant that acts as a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor, and nicotinic antagonist.[2][3] Bupropion belongs to the chemical class of aminoketones and is similar in structure to the stimulant cathinone, to the anorectic diethylpropion, and to phenethylamines in general.

Bupropion lowers seizure threshold and its potential to cause seizures was widely publicized. However, at the recommended dose the risk of seizures is comparable to that observed for other antidepressants. Bupropion is an effective antidepressant on its own but it is particularly popular as an add-on medication in the cases of incomplete response to the first-line SSRI antidepressant. In contrast to many psychiatric drugs, including nearly all antidepressants, bupropion does not cause weight gain or sexual dysfunction.

wellbutrin also affects serotonin reuptake. it weakly inhibits all three neurotransmitters.
