I've been up and down on finding an effective treatment for high stress, tension and some GAD. 5+ years ago, I would of jumped at the chance of having a script for benzos but I got through my wild days without a doctors help. However, after experiencing several traumatic situations (wife miscarried, grandfather passed away, and then a very bad viral infection with muscle spasms), my doctor put me on Xanax 0.5mg IR 2x/day - this was 2 years ago.
I've been on/off but as of recently, back on full course due to financial and workplace stress and my wife is pregnant - considered high risk, and on bedrest (not easy). About 2 months ago, my back started having spasms, now a daily issue. I recently asked the doctor about switching to a longer duration benzo with more muscle relaxant effects. My suggestions were Valium or Klonopin, both which I have off-label experience with. He thought it would be a good idea to switch so we made the big leap from Xanax to Xanax XR - I'm game for trying anything, but I really was trying to move away from Xanax. He left it at 0.5mg, once daily to be taken with my Vyvanse 50mg in the morning. I see a marked difference in the duration of the tension relief but it does nothing for my nerves! The IR was quick and to the point, the XR, much like my Vyvanse, is slow to build and seems to be hiding itself much more. I read on the pfizer site about the method of action and understand that it does not work like the IR. I've written an e-mail asking for a change to 1mg XR or again mentioned the ideal solution of Klonopin or Valium. My doctor is pretty good at understanding needs, however he limited me on the IR's to 60x a month because he didn't want me to build much tolerance - and it was fine until my back started spasing. But 30x of the same dose XR's doesn't make up for what I lost in my general anxiety and stress. I also take Mirtazapine (Remeron) nightly to help go to sleep + have a daily antidepressant. His other suggestion was to add an SSRI and discontinue Xanax and use a traditional muscle relaxer for pain relief such as Soma - but he didn't want me doing both. What suggestions do you guys have for my need for muscle/tension relief and anxiety due to high stress?
