AFP praised for record year of drug busts

The Federal Government says Australian Federal Police have made record drug seizures over the past 12 months, taking nearly 1.8 tonnes of illicit drugs since last June.

Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor, paying tribute to the AFP on the International Day Against Drug Abuse, says the demand for drugs fluctuates, but authorities are constantly ramping up their efforts to prevent smuggling.

"The demand is there, but what is critical is how do we detect the drugs that are coming in and what best way can we do that?" he said.

"Well, the best way we can do that is having the AFP, the state police working with intelligence agencies here and with agencies overseas."

He says the AFP and its partner agencies have seized 30 per cent more illicit drugs this year compared to the previous year.

"I'm very happy to see a 30 per cent increase in seizures in one year," he said.

"1.77 tonnes is a lot of drugs and they were seized this financial year and I commend the AFP and state police and other agencies and indeed other agencies overseas that got us to this point."

Mr O'Connor says the effort has saved the Australian community an estimated $800 million in associated health and social costs.

He says the finds ranged from 126 grams of crystal methamphetamine hidden in a child's toy to more than 400 kilograms of cocaine hidden on board a luxury boat.

ACT cannabis seizures up 280pc

The amount of cannabis seized in the ACT rose a massive 280 per cent last financial year.

The Australian Crime Commission's latest report on illicit drugs says more than 740 kilograms of cannabis was seized in the Territory in 2009-2010.

That is up from 195 kilograms the year before.

That 280 per cent rise is the greatest percentage increase of any Australian state or territory over the year.

The national increase by weight was 7.5 per cent.

The number of cannabis seizures nationwide fell 4.5 per cent, but in the ACT seizures rose by 28 per cent.

Cannabis made up 99 per cent of all drugs seized in the ACT last financial year, and arrests for the drug rose 7 per cent.

The report found cannabis is still the dominant illicit drug in Australia in terms of arrests, seizures and use.

ACT Deputy Chief Police Officer David McLean say public tip-offs and successful drug busts were behind the spike in the Territory.

He says police have been successfully targeting people growing cannabis hydroponically in homes.

"We've been the beneficiaries of intelligence from the community, community-minded, community-spirited people who have picked up the phone and reported unusual events in their suburbs," he said.

"That combined with some good analysis and detective work on behalf of ACT Policing has contributed in the main to those large numbers."

Commander McLean says it is good to see a drop in the seizures and arrests relating to other drugs.

"For example heroin seizures, the actual number of seizures was down in the order of 60 per cent and the total weight seized was down by a similar margin," he said.

"That's very encouraging from our point of view and from the broader community's point of view I think it should be as well."

Commander McLean says the statistics will help police develop strategies for targeting drug crimes.

"The targeting and apprehension of people who choose to manufacture, sell, and possess illicit substances in the community is a priority of ACT Policing," he said.

"Too often police see the devastation that is left behind when someone looses their life or sustains significant difficulties due to drug use."

Bill Bayeh to be released from jail

Former Sydney drug kingpin Bill Bayeh has been granted parole after more than a decade in jail.

Bayeh was a major player in the Kings Cross drugs scene during the 1990s.

He was arrested in 1996 after giving evidence at the Wood Royal Commission into police corruption.

Bayeh was given a minimum sentence of 15 years in jail for cocaine and heroin trafficking.

His older brother, Louis Bayeh, was also jailed in 1997 for perverting the course of justice.

They were described by a police officer at the time as the biggest drug dealers in Kings Cross.

New South Wales Corrective Services Commissioner Ron Woodham opposed Bayeh's parole, saying he was just presenting a facade as a naive man.

But the parole authority agreed to release him anyway, saying his 15-year sentence was lengthy compared to crimes of a similar nature.

Bayeh is due to be released next month.

His period of dominance in Kings Cross was the inspiration for the third series of the TV drama Underbelly.

Cannabis found in crashed car near Collarenebri

Police from Castlereagh Local Area Command will resume a search for a man after more than 6kg of cannabis was found in a crashed car last night.

Officers attached to the Castlereagh Highway Patrol stopped the sports sedan on the Gwydir Highway 40km east of Walgett about 6pm, after the driver allegedly failed to dip his high-beam headlights.

Police became suspicious of the man’s behaviour after a licence checked revealed the driver to be in possession of an expired driver’s licence.

Police will allege the man then accelerated from the scene at high speed; officers followed the car for a short distance before requesting that police at Collarenebri intercept the vehicle.

When the vehicle didn’t arrive at Collarenebri, a search was initiated and the 1995-model Nissan 200SX was found in bushland 21km west of Collarenebri after it had left the highway and rolled several times.

The driver was unable to be found, however police subsequently located approximately 6.1kg of vacuum-packed cannabis in the vehicle. The drugs have an estimated potential street value of $49,000.

Police and SES volunteers searched bushland beside the highway without success last night and a search will resume this morning.
