Alleged drug ring member 'minor player' in kidnapping

A member of an alleged drug ring who helped to unlawfully confine a man in a south Canberra house over a drug debt has appeared in court for sentencing.

Adam Deans, 29, has already pleaded guilty to aiding the unlawful confinement of Benjamin Elliott.

The victim was held against his will by alleged drug ring leader Sharon Ann Stott, 49, and five others including Deans.

The group snatched Mr Elliot from the Wanniassa shops early on the morning of May 12, 2009, and held him in Stott's Kambah house for almost 24 hours, demanding he repay a drug debt.

Mr Elliot only escaped after police laid siege to the house.

The ACT Supreme Court has heard Stott is overbearing and that Deans had feared for his safety if he had helped the victim escape.

Justice Hilary Penfold says Deans was a minor player in the confinement and has indicated full-time custody is not necessary.

She has reserved her decision.

Earlier this week Stott and Fakatounaulupe Ngata, 31, pleaded guilty to unlawfully confining Mr Elliot. They are expected to be sentenced in August.

Three other accomplices, Jeremy Campbell, Stephen Trotman and Michael Charles Berwick, have also pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting unlawful confinement.

[NZ] Drugs - the latest afterball accessory

Forget hipflasks and fake IDs - doormen are confiscating Ecstasy tablets and bags of powder at this year's school afterballs.

Functions such as last weekend's Glendowie College party in Ellerslie start as much as two hours after the official school ball ends, allowing students to squeeze in one more party - which they have dubbed the "pre-afterball" and sometimes treat as an opportunity to drink heavily.

Manager of Club 519 Cecelia Chan said small bags of blue and pink powder were found on students entering the Glendowie College afterball last Saturday night and two grossly inebriated teenage girls were carried out of the venue and passed on to St John Ambulance.

"One girl was obviously on drugs," Chan said. "For kids that young, it's shocking."

A drunk Ellerslie girl, brought out on her father's shoulder with a St John ambulance officer in attendance, had "taken something else," her father was heard telling the paramedic.

But a friend of the girl, David Han, insisted she had not taken any illegal drugs and the father's comments had been misinterpreted.

"The Ellerslie girl is a close friend of mine and she had drunk too much at a pre-afterball," he said. "She had been grossly inebriated as stated and after not feeling well and clearly not in the best of mindsets, St John staff helped her and we [the friends] called her parents to pick her up. At no point during the night did she ingest any other substance other than alcohol."

The afterball's organiser, Cade Pellett from events company Afterglo, said his security staff had foiled a drug dealing operation at another afterball, for Northcote College, after a parent overheard two students talking about it in the toilets. A partygoer was found with 12 Ecstasy pills on him.

Fake IDs, alcohol and drugs were confiscated "almost on a regular basis", Pellett said.

"All I can say is we can't be in control of it, but we can be in control of the events," he explained. "That's when you have safety nets such as St John on site, so if anything does happen there's help there."

Pellett is behind an emerging brand of legal nightclub-style events for teens. He said his parties were legal, supported by the police and based on the idea that if teenagers were having fun, the parties would be safe. Pellett said he made $500 to $1000 on the larger afterballs, but struggled to break even on others.

Eighteen-year-olds were able to buy drinks from a restricted bar area, but the parties were otherwise alcohol-free.

"We want to be the solution to the problem, to the perceived problem," he said. "Everything comes down to entertainment. As long as they're not bored they're not going to be destructive or violent. It also comes down to security. We have a lot of safety barriers in place."

Last week's afterball featured scantily clad stage dancers from Fineline Promotions, which Pellett said added to the fun.

"They were fabulous, they changed the whole atmosphere of the room and it was a great photo opportunity for the guys. They invoke people to have a great time."

Fineline director Cindi Light, 28, said she hired four models, aged between 18 and 24, for the event.

They were told to avoid erotic or sexual dancing, to interact with the party-goers but not to hand out their phone numbers. "There's no hooking up allowed," she said. "The crowd seemed to be on a natural high. Women love it - it's semi-inspirational to have girls up there. They're not doing anything they shouldn't be doing."

Auckland Girls' Grammar School, Lynfield College and Rodney College were all scheduled to hold school balls this week, but there were no reports of any afterballs or associated problems.

Glendowie College's ball and afterball were last weekend, and schoolgirls from Diocesan School for Girls posted online saying they would be attending too, after their principal banned them from holding their own afterball.

More than 200 teens arrived in three busloads between 1.30am and 2am - two hours after the school balls finished.

Eden Security staff patted down the students as they entered, and any drugs seized were to be logged in drug boxes and handed over to police.

ONE of four men convicted over one of the biggest MDMA hauls in WA has had his jail sentence reduced in the Court of Appeal.

Dejan Medan, 31, was sentenced to 14 years' jail last year with a non-parole period of eight years and six months for his role in a plot to traffic a commercial quantity of powdered MDMA into WA in 2008.

In the Court of Appeal today, Mr Medan had his sentence reduced to 12 years with a non-parole period of seven years.

Last week, two other men Fabian Quaid – who once rubbed shoulders with former AFL star Ben Cousins - and Dimitrios Papadimitriou lost their bids to have their convictions over the massive drug ring quashed.

A fourth man, Rade Ljuboja, also lost his appeal last week to have his sentence reduced.

Mark Standen mate's drug talk not serious, court hears

HE admits talking about an "unlawful scenario" in which illegal drugs could be imported into Australia hidden in a shipment of rice - but former Crime Commission officer Mark Standen said he did not believe his mate was serious.

In the Supreme Court yesterday, Standen, who denies any knowledge of the alleged importation, rejected suggestions his evidence was "an entirely fresh set of lies" invented to exonerate himself, his informant Bill Jalalaty and third alleged co-conspirator, James Henry Kinch.

The trio are accused of plotting to import up to 600kg of ephedrine in a shipment of rice in 2008.

A former NSW Crime Commission assistant director, Mr Standen denies he was a party to the conspiracy because of crippling debts. It is alleged he hoped the drug sale would "wipe the slate clean".

The court heard yesterday that Mr Standen was in debt more than $200,000 at one stage, spending on average more than five times his weekly income.

Mr Standen has been giving evidence in his own defence for more than three weeks but yesterday Crown Prosecutor Tim Game SC began his cross-examination of the 54-year-old father of four.

Mr Game asked the accused about a $47,500 payment from Mr Kinch in late 2005-early 2006, which he did not disclose to the commission despite the receipt of such "gifts" being against its rules.

"Compromised is a state of mind," Mr Standen replied, adding that he did not feel at all conflicted by the informant's generosity.

"You didn't think to tell someone in the Crime Commission that there seemed to be an attempt to corrupt (you)?" Mr Game asked.

"You're right, I didn't think that," Mr Standen replied.

Mr Game also questioned why, following Mr Standen's four-hour recorded interview given to federal police shortly after his arrest, he had not mentioned anything about the "unlawful scenario" he now told the jury of.

He suggested that since then, Mr Standen had "realised the listening devices bear a meaning not consistent ... with what appears in the record of interview".

"I would disagree with that," Mr Standen replied.

Mr Game put it to Standen that he "had to come up with another story which implicates Mr Jalalaty and exculpates Mr Kinch". Mr Standen rejected the suggestion.

"The unlawful scenario is just shorthand for the fact that you can't (address) clearly incriminating conversations that take place over a nine month period," Mr Game said.

"The unlawful scenario is what happened," Mr Standen replied.

The trial continues.

[NZ] Man drops meth bag while stripping for police

A man has been charged with drug possession after dropping a bag of methamphetamine while voluntarily stripping in police custody.

Hamilton police stopped the 33-year-old gang member's car when they found him driving on a suspended license last night.

It took several minutes to pull him over and when he got out of the car, he was sweating profusely and shaking his head from side to side, police said.

He told officers he had been out at a bar watching the State of Origin match and had taken drugs.

When the man was taken to the central Hamilton Police Station for toxicology tests, he began stripping "of his own accord", police said.

That caused a bag of methamphetamine to fall out of his underwear.
