18 arrested in Mackay drug bust

^ More info on that same bust...

Police have arrested 18 people following a six-month operation aimed at dismantling a cannabis distribution network in Mackay in north Queensland.

Police seized more than 15 kilograms of cannabis, 100 MDMA tablets, a handgun and a large quantity of cash.

Rod Carroll, the officer in charge of the operation, says the 18 people arrested are facing 44 charges, including trafficking.

"Out of those 18 people, at least a third of them have been charged with trafficking and supply of dangerous drugs, which is the most significant drug offence there is under our Drug Misuse Act," he said.

He says it has put a big dent in the illegal drug trade.

"I would suggest that the decimation of this particular syndicate - if I can put it that way - will certainly put a significant hole in the cannabis distribution in the Mackay area," he said.

"It's an ongoing battle for the police, but it's one that we continue to fight."

Operation 'Clean End', West End QLD

On May 11 West End police commenced Operation “Clean End”.

Operation “Clean End” is being run over a three month period and will be targeting public order and illicit drug use in the South Brisbane and West End areas, the entertainment precinct and licensed premises.

Staff from throughout the South Brisbane District and from Operations Support Command will be utilized during the various phases of the operation.

As part of the operation, Drug Detection Dogs conducted sweeps through the entertainment precinct and at the entry points of licensed premises overnight. The increased police presence was well received by licensed venues.

As a result, a number of patrons within the West End entertainment precinct were detained and will face charges including illegal drug possession, public nuisance and urination offences and liquor related charges.

“The Drug Detection Dogs (Golden Labradors) have a very small operational footprint and are managed in an extremely professional and inoffensive manner”, Inspector Dave Cuskelly, Dutton Park Local Area Commander said.

“All activities surrounding Operation “Clean End” are strategic measures aimed at improving the public amenity and safety of the South Brisbane area including the West End entertainment precinct.”

“Those people that choose to disrupt the enjoyment of the peaceful majority by behaving in a violent or antisocial manner can expect to be challenged by police and prosecuted.”

The operation will run until August and Inspector Cuskelly advises this will include future activities involving Drug Detection Dogs.

Drug driver guilty

A 28-year-old Lakes Innes Drive woman has been found guilty of driving while under the influence of drugs after she was pulled over with two children in her car.
A cocktail of 10 substances was found in Sara Wiseman’s system when she was caught speeding with two children younger than 10 in her car on November 12 last year.

On Monday at Port Macquarie Local Court, Ms Wiseman had her licence suspended for nine months, was fined $800 and ordered to pay court costs of $79.

Police pulled over Ms Wiseman on the Pacific Highway at Coolongolook, 118 kilometres south of Port Macquarie, after reports of her gold Mitsubishi Magna weaving along the road.

A police car followed Ms Wiseman for two kilometres before pulling her over.

They reported the car was travelling up to 119k/ph in a100 kilometre speed zone, weaving and narrowly avoiding collisions with the road railing and other north-bound traffic.

Despite passing a roadside breath test, police reported that Ms Wiseman’s eyes were “glassy and dilated” and her “words were slurred and mispronounced.”

A subsequent blood and urine test at a Manning Rural Referral Hospital in Taree showed 10 substances in her system, including diazepam, nordiazepam, Oxazepam, Codeine, Oxycodone, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinal (THC) and methadone.

A forensic pharmacologist report stated Ms Wiseman had consumed the prescription drugs Valium, Panadeine Forte, Celapram, Serapax and Alphamox.

“Based on my specialist knowledge, the accused’s ability to drive at the time of interception was impaired,” the forensic pharmacologist said in the report.

On delivering his verdict, Port Macquarie Magistrate Thomas Hodgson said the presence of two children in her car made it a serious matter.

[NZ] Gift basket drug smuggler jailed

A key player in a multimillion-dollar drug syndicate run from London which smuggled hundreds of thousands of Ecstasy pills inside Harrods gift baskets has been given a lengthy prison sentence.

Matthew Frewer, a 38-year-old Englishman, pleaded guilty to three charges of supplying MDMA, a Class B drug.

Justice Geoffrey Venning today sentenced Frewer in the High Court at Auckland to eight years and nine months in prison, of which he will serve at least four years and three months.

Frewer was arrested as the principal wholesaler in the Ecstasy ring busted in July 2008 after police Operation Pave.

Tablets were hidden inside gift baskets from Harrods, the famous London department store, and posted to Auckland addresses rented under false names to cover the syndicate's tracks.

Once the gift baskets arrived, the illicit contents were delivered to Frewer, who arranged to meet with middlemen such as Nicholas Bowyer.
Bowyer was last week found guilty of the supply of Ecstasy, including selling tablets to Richard Allesio Rinaldi.

Rinaldi was also sentenced yesterday by Justice Venning after pleading guilty to one representative count of selling 3000 pills.

Home detention was declined and he was sentenced to two years and four months in prison.

Rinaldi and Bowyer both had high-flying careers with IBM and Microsoft before their arrests.

Another crucial link in the Ecstasy supply chain was someone who can only be called the Fisherman _ who pleaded guilty and gave evidence for the Crown.

The drug ring talked guardedly in code. "Cars", "car parts" or "wheels" referred to 1000 pills, while "invoices" or "paperwork" referred to payment for the drugs. Sometimes the drugs were described by the colour or the designs printed on the MDMA tablets, such as a cherry or iron cross.

The money poured in. On one occasion, Frewer sold 10,000 pills for $220,000. At that time, one Ecstasy pill sold for between $35 and $40 at street level. Frewer stashed the cash in a safety deposit box in the ASB vaults in downtown Auckland, which records show he visited 120 times over six months.

Police found US$240,000 ($375,000) and $100,000 in the vault, and receipts that showed $785,000 had been converted into US$502,000 and 30,000 ($65,700). However, Frewer was only paid for his work, he did not receive a share of the profits.

By then, millions of dollars were smuggled out of the country by syndicate members, often to Thailand, then back to London. One money courier, Periclis Antonio Pericli, was stopped at Auckland International Airport with nearly US$440,000 hidden in a suitcase. Another bag belonging to John Apostolakis contained US$150,000 and $480,000. The police first learned about Frewer in April 2008 after tailing Dean Keown, a convicted Christchurch drug dealer, who met him in Auckland.

Detectives began following Frewer and unravelled the syndicate by bugging the cellphones of suspects under surveillance.
Detective Sergeant Mike Beal, of the Auckland Metro drug squad, said the sophisticated Ecstasy ring was a "colourful cast of criminals" which had supplied the drug since 2004.

"These were people who had lots of opportunities in life, from backgrounds of privilege," he said. "They were well educated, well travelled, with a number of them in good employment. But drug dealing is all about the money."
