Customs and the Australian Federal Police makes 5400 drug detections this financial y

Customs and the Australian Federal Police makes 5400 drug detections this financial year

CUSTOMS and the Australian Federal Police have seized more drugs this financial year than ever before.

While criminals continue to try and find new way of hiding and disguising drugs, federal Home Affairs and Justice Minister Jason Clare revealed that so far in 2011-12 Customs and the AFP have seized 13 tonnes of illegal drugs and precursors at the border - a record haul.

So far this financial year Customs have made 5,400 drug detections - a record Mr Clare attributes to intelligence targeting the right parcels and the right containers.

“Intelligence is the key to seizing drugs and arresting the criminals who try to import them,” Mr Clare said.

“Ninety-six per cent of drug seizures come from intelligence from law enforcement agencies before the parcel or container even arrives in Australia.”

Mr Clare said criminals were still trying to find new ways of concealing illegal drug imports, and in 2011-12 to date Customs and the AFP have seized:

- 300 kilograms of cocaine on a yacht - the fifth largest cocaine haul in Australia’s history;
- 271 kilograms of cocaine secreted in a shipment of lawnmowers;

- 4.3 kilograms of pseudoephedrine disguised as bath salts;

- 55 kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine concealed as a liquid in beer bottles; and

- Almost 98 kilograms of heroin and 118 kilograms of pseudoephedrine hidden in cartons of raisins.

It can now be revealed that drug king-pin Pasquale Barbaro, of Griffith, in New South Wales, is serving a life sentence for importing the world's biggest ecstasy haul into Australia.

A suppression order on the sentence was lifted today, after a jury found four of his co-accused guilty of conspiracy to possess a commercial quantity of MDMA.

Barbaro, 50, originally of Griffith, in NSW, pleaded guilty to charges including the importation of 15 million ecstasy tablets.

The drugs, which were estimated to be worth at least $122 million, were hidden in cans labelled as "peeled tomatoes" from Italy.

Barbaro will serve a minimum term of 30 years in jail.

In sentencing, Justice King said he was at the top of a "very well organised worldwide criminal group".

"You, Pasquale Barbaro were at the apex of that criminality, at the very top of the tree in this country," she said.

"Your purpose in attempting to posess the goods was to ensure financial riches of a quite astronomical order."

Barbaro's co-accused, Saverio Zirilli, 55, was sentenced to 26 years in jail with a minimum of 18 years.

Both men were also convicted of attempted possession of nearly 100 kilograms of cocaine, hidden in bags of Columbian coffee beans.

Four others have been found guilty of one count each of conspiracy to possess a commercial quantity of MDMA.

Man arrested, drug seized - Douglas Park

Police from the Traffic Strike Force have arrested a man and seized drugs after he crashed his car while allegedly evading police in Sydney’s south-west overnight.

Police from the Traffic Strike Force were working within Camden Local Area Command about 10.30pm yesterday (26 May) when they saw a Holden Commodore stopped at the intersection of Moreton Park Road and Douglas Park Road, Douglas Park.

Ten truck drivers test positive for drugs in 48 hours

Ten truck drivers have returned positive results to random drug testing during a 48-hour joint heavy vehicle operation.

The NSW Police Force and Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) conducted the operation between 6am Wednesday (23 May 2012) and 6am yesterday (Friday 25 May 2012) at the Marulan and Mt White Heavy Vehicle Checking Stations (HVCS).

More than 180 heavy vehicles were stopped and inspected by Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers and RMS investigators at the HVCS on the Hume Highway, Marulan, and the F3, Mt White.

Police issued 37 traffic infringements, including two for speeding, and seven cautions.

More than 800 random drug and breath tests were conducted during the operation, with 10 returning positive results at the mobile drug testing unit.

Each driver was issued a 24-hour prohibition notice from driving and the saliva samples were sent for laboratory testing.

Operations Commander of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Superintendent Stuart Smith, said police would not tolerate anyone driving while under the influence of any illegal substance.

“The NSW Police Force shows zero tolerance to drug- or drink-drivers, and truck drivers who are under the influence can expect the same treatment,” Superintendent Smith said.

“If the laboratory tests return a positive result, the driver will be charged with driving with an illicit drug and will have to face court.

“They may face penalties of up to an $1100 fine and/or six months’ licence disqualification, which for a truck driver means no work for six months,” Superintendent Smith said.

Man arrested over heroin in whiteboard markers

A 37-year-old Cabramatta man is scheduled to appear in Parramatta Court today charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) with allegedly importing approximately 2.4kg of heroin into Australia.

On 22 May 2012, Customs and Border Protection officers at the Sydney Gateway International Mail Facility examined a consignment which had arrived in Australia from Vietnam a day earlier, addressed to a residence in South Granville, NSW.

A man will face court this morning on charges of supplying a commercial quantity of cannabis after Police allegedly found him in possession of almost $800,000 worth of the drug.

Detective Sergeant Glenn Leafe said Police allege that at about 8.30 on Friday night the man, who was driving a Holden stationwagon, was apprehended at the Ali Curung turn off along the Stuart Highway.

“Police apprehended the vehicle and on inspection allegedly found a cryvac bag containing cannabis,” Detective Sergeant Leafe said.

“The driver of the vehicle, a 46-year-old, was arrested and the vehicle seized.

“On further inspection of the vehicle, Police allegedly found a further 32 cryvac bags of cannabis, creating a total of 33 bags.

“Police allege each bag was found to have about 453 grams of cannabis.

“The cryvac bags had allegedly been secreted in potato crisp packets and packed into plain white boxes. The boxes were in full view in the rear of the vehicle.

“Police believe that the quantity of cannabis, if sold in individual deal bags in Darwin, would have a street value of $748,400; if sold in remote communities this value would be significantly higher.

“This is a drug that contributes to a significant amount of anti-social behavior and Police are very happy to have seized this before it was sold.

“The man was charged with:

Supply Cannabis - Commercial Quantity.

“He was remanded in custody and will appear before the Alice Springs Magistrates Court this morning.”

1,700 individually wrapped foils of cannabis weighing 0.2 grams each were seized at Darwin Airport by Drug and Organised Crime Squad Detectives yesterday.

Police will allege the drugs were heading for Nguiu on the Tiwi Islands and were concealed in biscuit boxes and cigarette packets

Detective Acting Superintendent Peter Schiller said the haul would have cost the Tiwi Island community in excess of $46,000

“People who profit from this kind of enterprise give very little thought of what harm they are doing to vulnerable members of society. They care only about themselves and Police are determined to disrupt this supply.

“A substantial effort was obviously involved in physically preparing these foils and concealing them. It is shame this industrious effort couldn't be directed towards something that benefits the community rather than something that brings misery."

A 36 year-old female has been arrested and charged with Possessing a Trafficable Quantity of Cannabis and Supply a Dangerous Drug in a Remote Community. She was bailed to appear at the Darwin Magistrates Court on the 21st June.

China drug smuggler able to get citizenship

China drug smuggler able to get citizenship

A smuggler for one of the biggest methamphetamine syndicates in New Zealand was able to obtain citizenship before officials learned of his crimes.

Xing "Alex" Su was a police target in Operation Colossus as he travelled back and forth between China and New Zealand to organise the supply of pseudoephedrine, the main ingredient in P, for a drug ring in Auckland.

He was later convicted of importing the Class C drug and manufacturing methamphetamine and sentenced to more than four years in prison in 2009.

However, the Herald has learned Su obtained New Zealand citizenship as his drug crimes occurred while the application was processed.

He was deprived of citizenship in June 2010, one of 22 cases where citizenship has been revoked in the past 10 years. Su was deported after he was paroled later that year.

The case summaries were released under the Official Information Act after the most recent citizenship deprivation of Salam Mansoor Abdelabbas Al-Bawi in February.

The department refused to release the names of the 22 people for privacy reasons, including Su and others who have criminal convictions.

Another was a drug smuggler called Maciek Bogdan Korczowski.

The Polish national had been granted citizenship despite his arrest in New Zealand on charges of importing amphetamine from his home country.

Further investigation found he was wanted on forgery charges in Poland.

He was later found guilty of the drug offences in 2000, but skipped bail on the last day of his trial and went on the run for a year until being caught in the South Island.

He was deported in June 2005 after serving less than half of his eight-year sentence.

The most recent revoked citizenship is that of Al-Bawi, who failed in a High Court appeal in February to overturn the decision.

Al-Bawi was sentenced to six months' home detention in 2008 after he admitted lying in order to gain refugee status, residency, citizenship, and a passport under the name John Jacob Abrahim Joseph.

FOUR IDENTIFIED

22 citizenships have been revoked in the past 10 years. No names have been released.

Herald inquiries have uncovered four identities.

* June 2004: Maciek Bogdan Korczowski

* September 2009: Ping "Pamela" Hao.

* June 2010: Xing "Alex" Su.

* March 2012: Salam Mansoor Abdelabbas Al-Bawi.
