CMC predicts more Qld drug syndicate arrests

CMC predicts more Qld drug syndicate arrests

The Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) says it expects further arrests to be made as part of an investigation into a Queensland drug trafficking network.

The CMC has closed an 18-month investigation into the syndicate, which it alleges was distributing 20 kilograms of heroin worth about $25 million.

A 42-year-old man from the Gold Coast has appeared in court charged with trafficking in and possession of various dangerous drugs.

The CMC's assistant commissioner for crime, Kathleen Florian, says that is just the beginning.

"It's likely that this heroin came from interstate but this is the subject of ongoing inquires," she said.

"In fact, we've just moved into the covert phase of this matter with the arrest of this target but further arrests are anticipated over the next couple of weeks."

She says the charges are very serious.

"It's a good example of the focus that CMC crime area has on the highest threat target not only from the point of view that we will be alleging this target was at the highest level of the operation in Queensland but from the point of view of the commodity being heroin and that being a commodity of significant threat and harm," she said.

Gang boss used drug codes - Crown

Gang boss used drug codes - Crown

The leader of the Killer Beez street gang used coded language to organise methamphetamine deals as police intercepted thousands of his phone conversations, a court has heard.

The Crown says Joshua Masters - a part-time rapper and owner of a record company - bought large amounts of meth and passed it onto associates.

Some were in the Killer Beez and others were family members.

Masters has pleaded guilty to four charges including supplying meth and money laundering, but four years after his arrest is disputing aspects of the police case against him.

A hearing in the High Court at Auckland this week heard police intercepted thousands of phone calls and text message conversations during operation Leo in 2008.

They included talk of "friends". Masters said he was organising protection. The police say "friends" are ounces of meth.

Masters said he is against meth. Although he introduced friends to convicted drug dealer Ming Nguyen, he didn't know what he and his associates were doing.

"I can't be blamed for what they're doing."

The court heard that after intercepted a phone conversation between Masters and Nguyen about three "friends", the latter was pulled over. Police said the car contained four ounces of meth, three of them together.

Crown prosecutor Josh Shaw pointed out to Masters that there were no friends, meaning people, in the car with Nguyen.

Police also found $20,000 in Masters' house. Masters said he was on a sickness benefit and receiving $175 a week at the time of his arrest in 2008.

The money, he said, came from merchandise, CDs and ticket sales associated with his record company Colourway and was kept in a filing cabinet.

He said his partner was the only one with a key to the cabinet.

Masters' lawyer Ron Mansfield and Mr Shaw will file submissions to Justice Kit Toogood regarding the hearing before Justice Toogood sentences Masters in July.

The hearing has also provided an insight into how the Killer Beez started.

Masters told the court that although he was seen as the head of the gang, he was only one of three that started it up.

He confirmed members' names to Mr Shaw and said many were sons and nephews of members of the Tribesman gang.

Masters said he and two cousins came up with the idea of the gang during a "lag" in prison.

They decided the gang would have three areas of focus - sport, music, and business. "Each of us had a talent that we wanted to share," he told the court.

He said the Killer Beez had no headquarters, no real structure and there were no patches. He conceded that some members made money by breaking the law but others had their own businesses or worked for wages.

Masters said once out of prison, the police "harassed" him over the Killer Beez and he asked his partner to incorporate the gang in his cousin's name and file papers with the companies office.

"It was my way of saying goodbye, everyone was thinking it was made to be a gang ... that's not what I wanted."

He said he wanted to spend more time on his record company.

Nguyen and Masters were among 44 people arrested as part of Operation Leo. Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of meth was seized.

Nguyen was jailed in 2010 for his part in the drug dealing. He received a sentence of nine years and three months with a minimum non-parole period of four years and six months.

The Killer Beez gang was associated with violent and unprovoked attacks on the North Shore that left two young couples with serious head injuries in January 2008.

Police hail a 'dramatic drop' in the use of P

New Zealand's decade-long epidemic of methamphetamine use is finally winding down.

Preliminary results from a new Health Ministry survey, due to be released soon by Prime Minister John Key, show the proportion of New Zealanders aged 16 to 64 who had used the drug in the previous year has halved from 2.1 per cent, when the last survey was taken in 2007-08, to just 1 per cent.

Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Cahill told a seminar at Auckland University yesterday that the "dramatic drop" tallied with other data suggesting the epidemic peaked in the early 2000s.

Police busts of clandestine "P" laboratories peaked at 241 in 2006 and fell slowly to 180 last year, despite police pouring more resources into seeking the drug under a three-year "action plan" Mr Key began in 2009.

The three years end next month with police tentatively celebrating success.

"We detect that there has been a decline of methamphetamine users - certainly in new users, in mainly younger people taking up the drug," Mr Cahill said.

"I don't think methamphetamine is seen very much as a social drug any more, pretty much the opposite - it's an antisocial drug. I think society has done a pretty good job of demonstrating how harmful methamphetamine is," he said.

"I think that has worked. I think we are actually winning - fingers crossed!"

Drug Foundation director Ross Bell said the Health Ministry survey, taken between May and December last year, was "enormously significant".

"I don't think that can be over-exaggerated," he said.

Mr Bell said it could be credited to both police and customs enforcement work and an increase in addiction treatment funding from $90 million a year to $120 million a year under Mr Key's action plan.

Mr Cahill also said the fall in P's broader popularity meant the problem was now a hard core of addicts who still needed help.

"That is possibly where the emphasis on treatment is more important than ever."

The 2007-08 survey was the first one by the Health Ministry. Previous surveys by Massey University found that meth use among a narrower age group aged 15 to 45 peaked at 5 per cent in 2001, soon after the drug burst onto the scene in the late 1990s, and fell to 3.4 per cent by their last survey in 2006.

In separate surveys, Massey has found that meth use by a sample of 828 people detained in police cells in Whangarei, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch actually increased last year, from 29 per cent in 2010 to 38 per cent in the Auckland sample.

Massey researcher Paul Sweetsur and Mr Cahill both said this was probably a reflection of increased police targeting of meth users rather than a real increase in drug use.

But that survey also found that the drug is still readily available. Almost 75 per cent of the Auckland detainees, compared with 68 per cent in 2010, said it took them less than an hour to obtain it when they wanted it.

The median price of the drug quoted by the Auckland detainees also fell slightly, from $633 a gram in 2010 to $625.

Community worker Denis O'Reilly, who organised the seminar, said it was possible more meth was now being imported directly in forms that were difficult to detect, such as dissolved in water or other liquids, and less was being manufactured locally.

Two children aged three were at the premises.

And, police have discovered a large commercial drug lab at a house in Singleton, in Perth's south.

Three arrested in major drug lab raid

Three arrested in major drug lab raid

A few more details from the same article above...

ORGANISED crime detectives have raided a significant "commercial-sized" clandestine drug laboratory near Mandurah, where it is alleged three different drugs were being manufactured.

Officers raided a property in Penson Street in Singleton at 8.50am after receiving information that drugs were being produced on-site.

Police spokeswoman Sergeant Naomi Smith said officers found chemicals and equipment consistent with the manufacture of prohibited drugs and had identified what they believed to be the production of methamphetamine, the date-rape drug GHB and a dangerous hallucinogenic known as DMT.

DMT, or dimethyltryptamine, is typically sold as a brown powder and causes hallucinations, an inability to concentrate, fear and paranoia. Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), gives users a euphoric sensation and has been linked to fatal overdoses.

Chem Centre chemists are assisting police in dismantling the set-up and safely remove the volatile chemicals.

Singleton drug lab discovered

Three people are in custody. Charges have not been laid.

Meanwhile, police are investigating another clandestine drug laboratory discovered in an Apple Street house in Upper Swan this morning.

Police said detectives found items used to manufacture of methamphetamines during a search of the house where two three-year-old children were also located.

Inquiries are continuing.

Residents' reactions

One resident said they were not surprised by the bust after smelling strange odours coming from the area.

But for Jill Lutey, another nearby resident and a mother of three, the alleged drug lab was a shocking discovery.

“I’m very annoyed, I’ve got kids that play along this street. It’s such a scary thought,” she said.

“I’ve lived in this area for 11 years and we know everyone on the street accept that house.

“And to think that right across the road from the house is a dance studio. It makes you wonder.”

Drug suspect 'blew $1m at casino'

Drug suspect 'blew $1m at casino'

NINETEEN people, including one man who blew $1 million at a casino, have been arrested for alleged drug dealing on the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast police Detective Inspector Tim Tresize said the arrests, which also resulted in drugs, weapons and cash seizures, were the culmination of two separate drug operations.

The arrests were made in suburbs in and around the Gold Coast today.

Insp Tresize said about 1000 ecstasy pills, three firearms and a pill press were among the items seized.

One of those arrested spent more than $1 million at Jupiters Gold Coast casino in the past 12 months, he said.

"(That) indicates the profitability of this type of activity," he said today.

Insp Tresize said those arrested were typically "lifestyle drug dealers".

"They do it to have an attractive and luxurious lifestyle in terms of motor vehicles, in terms of possessions, in terms of cash assets," he said.

"That's probably the best way to characterise this particular type of person that we've seen in this investigation."

Insp Tresize said the investigations centred around three main targets and the arrests would help curb the glitter strip's "drug climate".

The 14 men and five women arrested will appear in Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Drugs smuggled in Finks’ underwear

Drugs smuggled in Finks’ underwear

Finks drug runners tucked clip-seal bags of cocaine in their underwear in order to smuggle it on flights from the Gold Coast to Tasmania, a police informant has revealed.
In court documents made public this week, a former Finks drug runner-cum-police informant has detailed how other men would transport drugs, tucked under their genitals, on flights from Coolangatta to Launceston and Hobart.

The documents, which have provided a rare insight into the inner-workings of the club, state senior Finks relied on lowly drug runners and limousine drivers to deliver drugs in and around the Gold Coast and interstate.

On one occasion, the now-47-year-old collected two ounces of cocaine hidden beneath rocks and tiles in the backyard of the Paradise Point home of Sacha Nachouki, who has been identified as a member of the "Finks Terror Team" in the court file.

The informant said he delivered the drug to two other drug runners, named Neil and Jamie, who were waiting for him at his Surfers Paradise unit in the Palazzo Colonnes.
"I watched Neil put the cocaine down his pants. Then they caught a taxi to the Coolangatta airport, as they were both going back to Tasmania," he told police, according to court documents.

"Sacha told me that Neil was taking the cocaine to [a member] of the Devils Henchmen Motorcycle Club in Tasmania.
"I remember that I gave Neil cocaine on five different occasions.

"Neil's job was to take the cocaine to Tasmania. He always put the cocaine in his underwear, underneath his ball sack.
"I never saw Jamie transporting the cocaine to Tasmania, but he always travelled with Neil from Tasmania up to Coolangatta and then travel back to Tasmania, while Neil carried the cocaine. Jamie knew that Neil was carrying the cocaine."

The informant said the drug runners would fly under different names and sometimes on different flights to avoid detection.
"Neil would sometimes travel to Launceston as they had crappy security there and Jamie would go to Hobart and they would meet up later," he said.
"Neil would also tell me how he would just watch movies on his laptop when he was flying."

The informant also told police that at least three limousine drivers to deliver drugs in and around the Gold Coast.
The informant's statement was included in two boxes of police evidence submitted to the Supreme Court as part of an application to have the Gold Coast chapter of the Finks Motorcycle Club declared a criminal organisation under the state's anti-association laws.

The application contains a chronological record of the times members were allegedly intercepted by police in New South Wales and Queensland and even once in the Northern Territory and recorded the fact they either admitted to being a Fink or were wearing Finks-related colours dating back to the early 1990s.
