How does the AVG bother you? I've had it for a few years and it's been no problem. Once you get used to it you know that sometimes when you download a file you'll need to temporarily disable it, if not I'll get a wee warning. Other than that it's only if it's a 'critical' update, apart from that I never see the thing unless looking at my hidden icons thing in Windows 7.
That alongside Spybot S&D and I'm sorted, although any rare occasion I've had a virus I've to get some sort of external application made specifically for that virus, but that's happened once in about two years.
