The 2010 Winter Olympics Thread!!

two periods in the books. 3-2 USA right now. the end of the 2nd was end to end action. this shit's getting intense. neidermayer got a bit of a cheap slam on johnson in there at the end of the period. frustration is obviously building up.

I can't believe they didn't yank brodeur after the first. he had a couple good saves there in the second, but that 3rd US goal was totally saveable. and once again, pronger shows why he should be put out to pasture (or taken out back and shot).

I wouldn't say that Canada is lucky to only be down on goal though. this game has been more than one-sided in every aspect other than the scoreboard.

i agree on all points. canada dominated the second period, no doubt, but the US doesn't get intimidated easily. miller made some key saves, but so did brodeur. pronger AND neidermayer have both been sub-par. obviously they're on the team for experience and all that jazz, but as has been mentioned by the canadian fans you don't need guys like pronger and neidermayer to tell guys like crosby and staal to settle down. the young guys on canada's roster are very mature.

the US will have to step it up in the third, though, if they intend to keep this game on their side.

this. phaneuf instead of pronger and the score in this game is 2-1 canada.

that breakaway exchange was so intense too.

yeah, phaneuf is a stud, he makes some iffy plays in his own defensive zones from time to time, but the physicality of his play is so intense that guys fear goin in on him in the first place.

jesus that game got intense!!! without miller, the US would have been lost. take nothing away from them though, they played well, but miller was the deciding factor.

that was an unbelievable game. despite the final score, I don't really feel bad about canada's performance. they outgunned, outpassed, and outhit the US team by a wide margin. without miller that game would have been a blowout.

my only real complaint about canada's play was a lack of guts in their own zone. I counted one blocked shot the entire game, and it was by drew doughty. I was skeptical about doughty going in, but he had an awesome game.

honestly, i really like doughty. he can be a liability at times, but he leaves everything on the table. i think he's been far less a liability than pronger anyways (as i'm sure you'd agree with).

doughty came out swinging, and he generated a few offensive chances too.

I also think Babcock should have called a time out when Brodeur got his bell rung. and that Luongo should have gone in after the first. idk what planet brodeur was on. he made a few doozies, but was ranging WAY too far out of the net. just because you are allowed to play the puck in the corners in international play doesn't mean you have to, marty.

i'm not really into hockey at all but my friends were over watching it so i did. it was very entertaining and the u.s. goalkeeper seemed to have a good game.

alasdair

yeah toa$t, brodeur was panicked straight from the beginning. he was making such rookie mistakes. and when you think he gained his composure back, he goes sprawling for a puck outside the crease that gets banged home for a rebound goal. granted there was potential interference on backes just before it, but that's on the refs. brodeur didn't need to sprawl out for a puck that far out of the crease. what was it 2 goals on 6 shots in the first and 1 goal on 2 shots in the 3rd? i think luongo would have been a better bet, too. especially after that pathetic start.

alasdair!!! miller (the US keeper) had an amazing game. he absolutely showed why he's in the nets right now. if your friends are still over, you guys should catch the finland v sweden game, it should be a great game as well.

yeah dude, it was those huge sprawling dives that really got to me too. it seems to work for tim thomas, but that has never been brodeur's style of play

tim thomas is an anomoly. sometimes i don't understand HOW he makes the saves he does. brodeur is a veteran and while still good in the NHL, i think he relies more on a trap than an offensive style of play. if the canadian defense isn't playing on the level they should, brodeur's not nearly as effective.

wow, did canada ever dominate russia tonight?! that game was so one sided it wasn't even funny. it was such a fun game to watch though cause canada looked incredible. it was a serious cause for concern for the US.
