Terrible New Adderall Reaction

So my doctor started prescribing me Adderall about a year and a half ago. For months, it was awesome. I took it as prescribed, and everything worked perfectly. I did great in school, which was all of a sudden the most interesting thing in the world, and I had the normal feeling of euphoria.

I was really happy with that until around last fall, when I started to take more than prescribed, and then started binging. I would take massive amounts of it (sometimes 200mg a day, and I think I even took as much as 300mg in a day once), and then go through withdrawal while I waited for my doctor to write a new prescription at the end of the month.

Obviously my tolerance rose, and the meds became less effective. It still kind of tweaked me out and put me in this zone, but instead of studying or reading or something I would get distracted with stupid shit, like watching porn for hours on end.

But what is more concerning is that in the last month or so, I've begun to have these really terrible physical reactions to it. I'm not taking as high of doses as I used to, and it still makes me feel so sick. It's hard to describe. My neck, muscles and eyes get really sore, I get really gassy and fart and burp constantly, I have diarrhea all the time, I have this really strong, weird smell all over my body that I can't get rid of, I can't swallow easily, I have headaches, I sleep even less than when I was binging really hard, and then today I had a terrible nosebleed. I can't remember the last time I got a nosebleed, so that was weird, and this one was crazy. It was instantaneous, and then blood was just gushing out of my nose and wouldn't stop.

Does anyone know what the hell is going on? I guess the other factor is that I also take lithium, seroquel and lexapro. Could they be interacting in some weird way?

as an amphetamine user, the muscle soreness, gassy/farty happenings, and diarrhea are common. the muscle soreness comes from the fact that the amphetamine constricts your blood vessels because of the higher blood pressure that it causes. amphetamines release norepinephrine. that gas/flatulence/burp/diarrhea stuff is actually gastric reflux caused by the amphetamine. the strong weird smell is, again, the amphetamine. it smells sour. it kind of smells like a wet article of clothing or something that you hung up to dry and it has that weird awkward mildewy smell, right? that's your sweat.

i know of those things because it happens or has happened to me (minus the sweat one). there are many factors that contributed to it and it's hard to boil it down to a set of triggers because i don't know much about the other three you're using.

^This. You need to reduce your dose and take a break from the amphetamines. Taking those high doses can cause serious problems. Adderall is a powerful amphetamine stimulant.

Have you been on Seroquel, Lexapro and lithium the whole time you've been on Adderall? These drugs can certainly interact with each other and with amphetamines (Adderall), and may have been contributing to the reactions you've been having.

You're probably right about taking some time off it. Does anyone know about the diarrhea or nosebleed? Or why all of this came on so suddenly?

Also remember that amphetamines are great at depleting the body's micro nutrient stores. Make sure you're keeping up with potassium and Magnesium. Drink plenty of water and eat fruit.

Like said above diarrhea is a common side affect. How do you take them, if your railing them, the nose bleed could be linked to that, or dehydration? I'm assuming the reason it's all happening at once is that your body is in need of a break. Try and exercise and eat healthy. Good luck : )

Are you sure it's definitely related to the Adderall? Would hate for it to have a different, medical cause but put it down to side effects and not get it checked out..

+1. I think that if you feel these side affects are greatly impacting your health and do not subside with less use it could be something entirely separate.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the adderall. When I take a break from it, they go away.

I think I'm going to try to go off of adderall, because the side effects are bad, and I think my tolerance has gotten to the point that I don't get anything good out of it either. If I ask my doctor to prescribe a different ADD medication, will I start off with a tolerance to it because I've been on adderall, or is each drug different? And does anyone know what the transition process would be like? Withdrawal symptoms?

All amphetamines will be cross-tolerant..

I'm really sorry you get such a bad response now, but I must say I am relieved you are sure it is the Adderall. At least you know how to treat it!

Can someone say a little more on the cross-tolerance issue? Does that mean that a different medication would be just as ineffective as Adderall is, or just not as effective as it would be otherwise? Because on the occasions that I don't take Adderall, I go through really terrible withdrawal symptoms, so I really don't want to stop cold-turkey.

Sorry I am not an expert on US prescribed amphetamines at all, will let someone else field that one..

Just have your doc taper you off. Drink hella coffee if u r feeling really tired or whatever. It sucks of course but that's what you get when you abuse drugs.

Dude...this same thing started happening to me. You gotta understand that most of the generics out there suck and cause issues even at prescribed doses. What you need to do is take a week vacation from everything(school, work, any obligations) and go buy an 1/4 of some dank weed. Staying high, eating a lot of food and water, and resting will make all this crap go away. Cold turkey doesn't really matter on Adderall, you aren't gonna go into horrible withdrawals or anything. You will just feel like shit, which the above remedy will cure. It did for me.

What you do after that is up to you but learn from this, don't be stupid and abuse drugs.

So why are you still taking the drugs? Try some opiates or smoke weed and chill out with the amphetamines a while. As you said, you would binge and then suffer days through withdrawal. Now that your dosages are lower the WD's wont be as bad and there are plenty of remedies/drugs to make withdrawals easier. I find it hard to be in pain after blowin a blue :)

I really advise anyone experiencing NEW side effects from recently filled prescriptions to immediately stop taking them. There is definitely a contaminant in the recent amphetamines. I am prescribed procentra, a liquid formulation of dextroamphetamine and I can tell you positively that I experienced the same effects. I contacted the manufacturer and filed an adverse reaction report on the FDA website.

You are not the only one who has experienced these side effects. I thought I was going to pass out and even threw up in the parking lot on the way to work.

If you have any feeling that your adderall is different, report it to the FDA and STOP taking it. You do not want to end up in the hospital, or permentantly injured or changed from this unknown chemical.

Online Reaction Reporting Form:

For harm reduction, please please please don't take adderall that has any new side effects.

ALSO:
I noticed that my kidneys were not working well and my urine was very frothy. I highly recommend that you eat something with sodium. Table salt immediately helped my dizzy lightheadedness. Only try salt if you are feeling light headed. I went out and bought a bottle of pedialyte after I realized this. Also, if you feel like shit or are almost incoherent, go get emergency help. Really.

Hi Oster, welcome to Bluelight and BDD, and thanks for the warning! I'm going to have a look at the link you provided shortly. Sorry you had such an unfortunate reaction, and good work on reporting it officially.

Quick thing - if you think your kidneys aren't working properly, sodium isn't necessarily going to help - it can actually put more strain on the kidneys as the sodium levels in your blood are kept at a very narrow range and an extra sodium-load can overwork them. However, if you are dehydrated (through vomiting, diarrhoea or sweating) you do lose salts and it can be good to replace them. Feeling lightheaded can be a sign of dehydration, as can thirst, headaches and a dry mouth (obviously, hehe..)

Frothy urine is sometimes caused by protein leaking from your kidneys. It can also be due to an infection. If it carries on get it checked out by a doctor :)

And I agree, if you feel ill, get some urgent help!

This is an old thread and although I really do appreciate your post, we try to keep to more of a quick q&a format (see the "state of BDD sticky") and this thread had run it's course so I am going to close it. I hope you understand :) if you have any queries feel free to shoot me a pm!
