Teens being hospitalized after drinking hand sanitizer

There's a new dangerous trend among teenagers -- trying to get drunk by guzzling hand sanitizer. Over the past month at least eight teens in Los Angeles county have landed in area emergency rooms with alcohol poisonings after drinking the cheap liquid, the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles reports.

It's unclear whether the teens knew each other, or had communicated, but at least some of them were distilling the hand sanitizer products, which typically contain at least 60 percent ethyl alcohol, using salt to separate the alcohol. The result is a powerful 120 proof shot, about 50 percent more potent than vodka or tequila, says Dr. Cyrus Rangan, medical toxicologist with the California Poison Control System.

"If a person has never had alcohol before, they can get drunk almost instantaneously," Dr. Calvin Lowe told NBC Los Angeles. "It's very, very dangerous."

Using hand sanitizer to get drunk is just the latest get-wasted fad, similar to young people downing mouthwash or cough syrup, also known as robo-tripping. In 2010 a Food and Drug Adminstration panel weighed whether to require a prescription to buy products containing dextromethorphan, the ingredient found in numerous over-the-counter cough and cold medicines. The FDA panel voted against the proposal.

"Teens have always been looking for things around the house to get high, so they don't have to go to a drug dealer," says Rangan.

According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, the substances most frequently involved in teen poisonings in 2010 (the most recent data available) were:

Ibuprofen -- 10,030 calls
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (Antidepressants such as Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft) -- 8,419 calls
Acetaminophen (adult formula) -- 7,995 calls
Atypical Antipsychotics (Ablify, Risperdal) -- 7,319 calls
Benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax) -- 7,192
Alcohol -- 5,061 calls

This is just craziness. Go buy a bottle of Mad Dog 20/20 ffs. Is alcohol really that hard to come by these days? Didn't know where to post this, so feel free to move it to the appropriate forum.

Drug use among adolescents is down my ass.

I don't think robo-tripping is of the same caliber as downing mouthwash or hand sanitizer. Just pay a homeless person to buy you shit.

Fucking dumbasses. Isn't it denatured with like methanol or something insanely toxic?

HAHA I love the high number of benzo calls to poison control. Pretty fucking stupid considering the LD50 for them is like 10,000x+ (Probably up to 100,000x) therapeutic. And you'd probably need a few hundred thousand dollars just to get that much.

I love how everytime someone does something stupid it's "a new dangerous trend among teenagers". :D

Diazepam's therapeutic index is 100:1

how can you not believe in natural selection after reading stories like this?

Didn't some dude named Darwin say something about events like these?

and if I read replies, the fellow above me said the exact same thing. Ah well.

I remember one of my times in detox this kids drug of choice was some sort of jelly paint stripper. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

The LD50 for a few benzos is over 700g. Usually 10mg or less for a therapeutic dose.

Do the math hun.

That number may be relevant if the only reason benzos caused death was acute toxicity or if they weren't commonly abused in cocktails with opiates or alcohol which lower that number exponentially.

Therapeutic index in humans uses TD50, not LD50...

What about benzos like temazepam? I'm not really trying to argue with you, I'm just pointing out that issues do come up, especially with the more toxic/ sedating benzodiazepines. Plus, like villan said, even a tiny amount of another drug wipes out completely the relatively high safety index.

Its pretty cool that they are using salt to separate the alcohol. However, that is a far cry from 'distilling' the alcohol like the article claims. To those that are unaware, water has a higher affinity to salt(NaCl) than many organic molecules such as alcohol. This can be easily demonstrated if you put salt in 70% isopropyl alcohol. Two layers will form and the upper layer has a high percentage alcohol while the bottom layer will essentially be salt water. It must be this same principle that these teens are using to separate the alcohol from the hand sanitizer mixture. I'm sorry if this is considered synthesis discussion but I highly doubt it. It is annoying how a little bit of knowledge can be applied so stupidly though.

Just saying what the article says. It's not a benzo-only call if they didn't only do benzos and theoretically shouldn't contribute to that specific number of calls.
