Holy *bleep*, Herbavore, you have an outstanding talent!
I am pretty certain that I have seen your creations in the past, but that painting you posted is phenomenal..
:D !

i think my 3rd eye has been activated by the inca gods here:

i am 90% sure that this is in ollantaytambo.

Pastelcircus, you are an amazing photographer! That beetle is amazing, too; seriously it is like a jewel.

and michael, that's a pretty trippy picture you got, too.

I am about the most technically retarded person on the planet but back in the day I had this 35mm film camera, totally manual, that I finally mastered and loved to death. I took that thing everywhere--backpacking, traveling to all sorts of steamy, sandy countries, etc and it survived (with two complete cleanings) for about twenty years before some rubber part inside finally disintegrated. Now I have a digital camera with a decent lens but I can't figure out how to use it manually. I'm thinking of taking a class for old people LOL on how to "get the most out of your digital camera". =D

On the insect theme, here is one that my friend took with his phone at the reunion this summer in Pennsylvania.

Oh, Trip, thank you so much for the compliment! Means much coming from another artist. Speaking of which, have you settled back into painting since coming home?

Herbavore, a class like that would be beneficial for anybody, young and old alike. 35 mm manual cameras make everything better though, too bad yours took a shit.

That moth is beautiful btw: )

Oh, wow! That's what I love--look at the crisp definition of the figure and the soft background. That is really quite beautiful (as is your sister!) So do you still use a film camera a lot?

The one advantage that I can't imagine being without now that I've experienced it is the ability to see if you got the shot or not. I used to waste a lot of film!

Here is an old picture (must be from about 17 years ago?) but I love it because it captures one of the happiest parts of my life--just hanging around with my little guys listening to their conversations. There's a lot to be learned from little boys out in the world. I love how Caleb is so clearly into whatever his big brother is saying. They were both philosophers and they kept those conversations going right into adulthood. We all miss Caleb's take on life. At that age we called him The guru because he was constantly uttering the most profound stuff in this musing sort of little kid way.

Pastelcircus, those beetles used to be all over in Pennsylvania. They freaked me out so much. They'd always be tricking me when I was doing laundry. The colors in the picture are soo awesome though!

Herby, I loved the baggy sweater style of that time period. I used to admire my one aunt so much and she had the baggy sweater style going on and I copied her and made my mom buy me all baggy sweaters like that and I'd do the sleeve push up too like you had going on there.

Besides the sweater that's an adorable picture of you with your boys <3. You're the only one who knows a photo-op is going on lol, they're all into their conversation. So cute <3.

Herbavore, I haven't done much with the film at all, although I do swipe the camera from my sister when the opportunity presents itself. It's something I've always wanted to do, digital or not, and although it's more expensive, it's the imperfections of that 35 mm "one shot" that make it special. A roommate of mine and her boyfriend did this thing where they each got a camera and a roll of film and filled it up, then respun the film and shot over eachother's original roll, leaving two rolls of double exposed (for lack of proper technical terms) film.. You can't do that with digital.

And your photo is fantástico, I remember when you joined and wrote about your son, and you've posted about him regularly, but that Picture says it all <3

Stardust., do you get junebugs in Pennsylvania?

Pip, I'm diggin' the pastels + emerald green, major street cred in my book.

LOL, stardust---you would notice the sweater! (Like me noticing your bed sheets!). Well, you know since I only shop thrift stores, my clothes are either very hip and truly retro or just totally dated and ridiculously out of fashion. This picture would have been in about 1994 or 1995 and if my memory serves me well, those baggy sweaters were popular in the 80's. The good thing is that when your main social group is 4-7 year old boys, your fashion sense is definitely not an issue.:D

@Michael--those beauties are japanese beetles??? I thought those long red ones with the black heads were Japanese beetles--the ones that consume my roses every year. Which reminds me of something sad I heard on the news today. " After the nuclear meltdown in Japan, mutant butterflies have been discovered but scientists say there is nothing to worry about." 8( Nothing to worry about except maybe "science", the "news" and some little thing called an ecosystem?)

@ Pastelcircus--yes---love double exposures! They were always so trippy! :)

PiP--why does it look like two penguins encased in ice in the second one?

I was seriously considering bringing it back after evaluating that picture--you look awesome and I'll always admire you :). I think I'm headed to thrift shops tomorrow for baggy sweaters to bring the movement back. Who's with me!?

Great photo - this is one her grandkids will look at one day w/ joyful tears and say grandma was always beautiful.

@Herby. I love that moment there. It reminds me of spending endless hours w/ my mother and brother, philosophizing on dinosaurs and ninjas. <3:)
