I have really bad anxiety at times, so my doc
gave me a script for 5mg valium. I ended up taking 3 this week (on different days of course) I want to
cut down to one a week as I do not want to end up addicted, so is it generally safe to take
just one 5mg valium a week?

Hi flyinghighgirl:)

Taking less is always going to be safer in general, but I think you know that, I think your asking if it's OK to cut down that quickly and my answer would be, it's fine.

Valium / Diazepam hangs about in you system for at least a couple of days so dosing every other day is probably the best way to take it, I guess your doctor meant for you to only take them when you needed to but you've hardly gone overboard.

Dependence is a risk with all benzos at higher doses and more regular use than what you describe, just make sure you don't start daily use and escalating doses if that's at all avoidable.

Do you mean could you take it once a week every week without risking a physiological dependence? You can get mentally addicted to a drug regardless of how often you take it, but I think you were taking about physical dependence, where your brain adapts and you need the drug to function normally. Taking it only once a week is certainly far better than taking it every day, but this is actually not a simple question. It's not like if you take it every 4 days for 6 months you're guaranteed to develop a dependence but if you only take it every 5 days for 6 months you will definitely not develop any dependence. Taking it on a regular basis for a long period of time will likely give some level of dependence, even if it is minor and mostly mental. Even if you don't build up enough of a dependence to get severe physical withdrawals upon stopping you may find that your anxiety increases, you get cravings, or you have difficulty enjoying life. You may also find it difficult to stick to the once a week schedule and start taking it more often. Diazepam (and it's active metabolites) has a long half-life and even if you are able to stick to taking it only once a week, if you take it regularly for a long time it can lead to subtle things like tolerance, raising your dose, not feeling able to stop even if it no longer working/you're getting side-effects/your rational mind wants to stop, and getting some symptoms like anxiety if you don't have that pill once a week. But if you are spacing your doses out by about a week there is definitely a lot less likelihood of developing a serious dependence, like where you would risk seizures etc if you stop taking it. Does that make sense?

once a week is fine, i really doubt at 5mg you'll have any issues whatsoever. i take 5mg twice per week and i have no dependence or addiction whatsoever.

thanks for your advice. last time I took one was the day I posted, I am feeling a lot worse today, all panicy. I hope that this starts to go away after awhile, it is worse then before I even starting the valium :(

as swimmingdancer alluded to, you're less likely to gain any physical dependence to it, rather you'll start relying on it (psychological) for certain situtations.

using it only as needed and sporadic as possible is the best way to avoid physical dependence and lessen the strength of possible psychological dependence which may occur.
