symptoms of an APAP overdose

In acute acetaminophen overdosage, dose-dependent, potentially fatal hepatic necrosis is the most serious adverse effect. Renal tubular necrosis, hypoglycemic coma and thrombocytopenia may also occur.

Early symptoms following a potentially hepatotoxic overdose may include: nausea, vomiting, profuse sweating, and general malaise.

Just as a side note, some individuals can be completely asymptomatic during the first stages. In other words, irreversible liver damage can still occur without experiencing the initial symptoms like nausea, malaise, jaundice etc..

ahh fever is not one of um? ok the

I once admitted myself to the ER out of fear of ingesting a potentially toxic dose of acetaminophen. I've posted about in detail in the dark side, and if my memory serves me correctly, fever was an early symptom the doctor had mentioned.

Sure.
Remember that symptoms of an acetaminophen OD can take up to 12 hrs. to manifest, but usually don't take that long esp. the nausea...

Extreme nausea/vomiting (you'll feel quite ill), possible diarrhea,
Malaise,
Cold sweats/ pallor,
Irritability,

Progression of the toxicity can lead to convulsions, coma, and death.

But your first basic indicator(s) will be malaise (not feeling well), bad nausea/vomiting, and feeling that you just want to lay down (sweats, etc).

If you suspect that you've ingested too much acetaminophen (like WAY too much- over 7000mg/24 hours- technically you're not supposed to exceed 4000mg/ 24 hrs), get to the ER fast, because time is of the essence in cases like this...:\

But, if you're not experiencing any nausea or malaise, you're probably alright. Just remember that symptoms can take awhile to present- sometimes up to 12-15 hrs., so keep an eye on it, okay?

eh ive taken like.. maybe 7g exactly.. but its to late if i get symptoms... has anyone heard of ppl living from 7g of asprin?

Whoa, bud...let's get our substances straight, first of all.
Aspirin? Where'd that come into play?
I thought you were asking about acetaminophen, not aspirin...:\
For aspirin, a potentially toxic dose is seen above 150 mg/kg to 300 mg/kg.

So, which is it?
And, if you don't mind, what is your weight?

i have a 102 temp... which is not really weird seeing cuz of the op...

would a stim help if i was in trouble with APAP

In the UK, 12g is considered the limit - anything above 12g of paracetamol should be treated with an IV drip of N-acetyl cysteine (Parvolex), although anything above 4g/day is going to cause some damage (though generally not fatal)

If you do this repeatedly, as some people on BL seem to do from reading their posts, then you are storing up a shitload of problems for when you get older. Just because you have no symptoms now doesn't mean that you haven't done any damage. The liver has a large excess capacity, but every time you do something like the o/p did, you reduce that excess. Doing it repeatedly means that the excess capacity gradually gets less every time until there's none left; then a 7g dose will cause an untold amount of damage (and most probably put you on the liver transplant list)

The liver is also one of the most resilient organs within the human body. It has a remarkable ability to, loosely speaking, 'heal' itself. It is actually quite amazing how beneficial prolonged periods of healthy living are to a liver with minor damage.

I'm male, weigh around 165-175 lb, and for a while I was ingesting massive amounts of acetominophen. For nearly a year I consumed approximately 10,000 - 12,600 mg/day. Some days I would combine this with alcohol. Here are the symptoms I experienced:
mild nausea,
chronic bad breadth,
slight fever,
chronic pain in my abdomen (right side below the ribs).

I'm sure I've done some fairly nasty damage to my liver, but I am still alive and generally in good health (or so my doc says)... so SmokeTrails I don't think you need to be panicking much.

If someone damages their liver badly and gets jaundice then this tends to cause yellowing of the skin/eyes. Well that is medical terminology but I have yet to see somebody who displays this symptom.

But the pain in the ribs on the right side of the chest, that definately should serve as an indicator.
