Hey what's up? I recently completed this transition for the third time, every time being a complete success (no precipitated withdrawals, very little time spent actually sick).
Just for some brief background this time I has only been on methadone for about 3 months. The highest dose I got to was 35mg but I was steadily at 30mg when I discontinued dosing to make the switch. The whole time I was on methadone I was also using about a half gram or heroin IV most days.
Due to me moving and the clinic caring more about policy and money than me as a person I was forced to discontinue MMT in favor of suboxone. They had wanted $369 for the "intake" and wanted me to take off today and tomorrow from work to respectively complete my intake forms and then see the Dr, all the while knowing that most of my time spent at the clinic on these days would be spent sitting and waiting.
I took my last dose on Thursday, went to work, then used about 1gram of heroin IV after. The next day I went to work-still felt great-and used about .5g IV heroin after work. Saturday was the first day I began to feel withdrawals while at work. I was able to tough it out and made it to cop .5g heroin to use IV. I woke up Sunday morning sick as a dog, but still only a 12-13 on the Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale (COWS). My goal was to wait until I was bad enough and make the switch, but, my roommate being the nice guy he is came home and saw me like this and went out and got me a gram of heroin to split with him. We did it and I was ok for about 10 hours.
At around 9pm Sunday I began to experience withdrawals and as the night went on it got steadily worse. I have experience making the switch and I know my body pretty well so I was able to make a smooth transition, albeit not lacking a scare that I had sent myself into precipitated withdrawal.
At about 3am after sweating, yawning, sneezing, and fidgeting the hours away I crushed and took roughly 1mg suboxone IV (suboxone's bioavailability IV is around 98-100% compared to 30% sublingually. no the naloxone isn't going get in you and wreak havoc). Well I felt somewhat instant relief when injected followed by intense chills, sweats, cramps, and other withdrawals. I would go from withdrawing horrible to feeling warm and comfortable. This lasted about an hour until I just fell asleep. I slept only about 3 hours but I slept like a baby and woke up feeling great. I sit here now 9am Monday morning having injected another 1mg of subuxone upon waking and feeling awesome. My body has to get used the lower activity on my mu receptors and until then I WILL experience MINOR withdrawal symptoms such as chills (which is all I am experiencing right now). I figure by the time I wake up tomorrow morning I will feel great and can begin a 2 week long suboxone taper which has in the past gotten me off of everything without experiencing ANY withdrawals. It hasn't worked every time, but when it has it was great.
Have you switched from methadone to suboxone? What was your experience like? My uncle made the switch last week and it took him over a week to feel the way I do now. Different doses, different length on the clinic, different metabolisms. How has it worked out for you or swiy?
