Opioids switch from 3-20mg oxycontin CR (OPs) to 3-15mg morphine ER question

I believe that you are in serious pain that needs to be taken care of and that the medication your doctor has you on right now is not working as well as it should be.

But I also think that you shouldnt necessarily ask to go back to your last meds. Maybe ask if he could give you "somethign else" for the pain. That may end up being your last med, but it may be somethign new and better than anythign you have tried yet. your limiting yourself to only 2 types of medication when there is a whole world full of different types of pain meds.

Also....keeep in mind what I said about still being in a small amount of pain to prevent addiction. I believe that is monumentally important.

Thank you for your opinion, I really do appreciate it.
I understand what you are saying about the whole totally pain-free and addiction thing.... I have never been totally pain-free but the last meds (OCs/OPs) I was on were working fine for me, they allowed me to function normally (somewhat) .... It was me who was an IDIOT and got SO SCARED after reading everything about the OPs and also trying them myself that I ran to him thinking he would help, that's when/why he changed my meds .... idk why I did this, I think I just made a fast bad decision because I got scared and psyched myself out. I just didn't want to be miserable, I was trying to avoid it. I think everything I read about the OPs made me "think" that they didn't work as well when in reality I did not give them a REAL chance.... kicking myself in the ass right now, very hard. I did this to myself and I have to deal with it. :( At least until Monday when I can call his office and request I get switched back. I am so nervous about what will happen from there.... will he switch me back? prescribe something else? dismiss me as a patient? I just KNOW that my last meds worked for me and I was so SO SO SO SO stupid to try and get them switched. UGH. I just work a LOT and have a FAR drive to work everyday .... I need to be "normal" again, this is why I want my old meds.... I KNOW they work. So what do you think will happen when I call? I know you are no doctor, but I just want a little bit of ease to my restless mind right now.... I am totally miserable. I don't want to move because every move hurts. I just can't deal with this.....

And thanks again for writing back to me .... it REALLY has helped me. I appreciate it.

Were do you live? If you are in canada they have hydromorph-contin, and also they have the original OC's in canada still, not the new abuse proof ones. And you said you take percocets, right? Maybe you could have your doctor script you for less oxycontin, such as 20mg bid, and exchange your percocet for roxicodone 15mg, in the end it would still equal the 20mg oxycontin 3x daily and the percocet 10mg 4x daily mg per mg, and you wont have to take all that tylenol with it......Does your pain breakthrough the OC alot? If so you could tell your doc that, and he might be willing to give it a go.......but some docs are kinda weary prescribing oxycontin and roxicodone, due to the high abuse potential.

For obvious reasons I cant tell you what your doctor will tell you when you call him. But, if you call and say that these new meds are not helping your pain at all in comparison to your last medication and if there is someting else you could try....i think he will be more than happy to prescribe you something else to ease your pain(probably switch you back to your old pain meds, but honestly you might want to try soemhting new, like hydromorphone....mmm.mmm goood). If he is mean or rude to you and unwillng to help you out, I say...get a new docotor. your apying him to kill your pain basically and if hes not accomplishing that correctly, he needs to ficx it. Allthough, you WERE the one who decided to switch the meds, so he does kind of have a good reason to be less than understanding when you call him. But, in my opinion, what it all comes down to is whether or not your pain is being managed or not....and apparently, with these new meds, its not....so its your responsibility to make your doctor aware of that, and its his responsibility to fix it, and if hes a good doctor and actually has compassion for his patients, he will do the right thing and change your meds.

And like I said, if he doesnt do that, and he leaves you in pain, get a new doctor. It may suck having to find a new doctor and getting set up with him/her, etc....but if your not being treated the way you deserve to be treated when your paying someone to help you, you jsut gotta move on. Its kind of like a bad relationship.

Thanks so much for your input. I am so stressed about this, I just want to be back to normal.
I will call him tomorrow and leave a message on the prescription line requesting to be switched back.
I'll post what happens....
Bigsherm - thanks but I live in the US. :( But what about these Ethex things - everyone says they are the generic to oxys.... do I need a script specifically written out for them??

No as long as your doctor doesn't write "brand name only" on the script, you can get any generic you want.

Thank you bigsherm.

Everyone please keep their fingers crossed for me tomorrow - hopefully I'll get switched back to my norm.... I just CANNOT take this pain anymore. It's throwing everything off for me!!!!!!!! :'( :'(

Good luck, I hope it goes well. Whatever happens, I reccommend always staying calm and treating your doctor with respect. Getting upset and acting out at him/her will not help you. I have no reason to believe that you will do this, but you never know, some people are extremely emotional, and cant control themselves sometimes.....but im sure you will do fine.
Please let us know how it went.

Well I called.... he told me to double up the dose and see him in a week, week & half. I told his nurse that I really just wanted to be back on my old meds, the ones that worked for me. she said she'd tell the doc but she never called me back. I called the office and made my appt for a little over a week from when I called. I really hope he is just wanting me to use up these meds or something b4 he puts me back.... cause I really really do not like these new ones. I feel awful on them and I do not want to double up. if 1 makes me feel shitty, why would I take 2?? and of course I am still nervous & anxious because my routine is completely off and I'm wondering what he's going to do next week.... I cant take another big unknown change right now.... I just want to be back to normal.... these new meds are messing me all up.
also he said something about not wanting to put me back yet cause my body is just getting used to the morphine & it wouldn't be good for my body to change back so fast .... Wtf does that mean?? sorry if I rambled and didn't have great punctuation..... bad morning 4 me. :( thanks for the ear guys.

don't snort morphine.. very low BA, the best if you can't IV is plugging... also oxy is 1.5 times stronger than morpjine and has a very hih BA orally (Oxy), you'll be reducing your dose of opiates/painkillers considerably... so i suggest that you tell your doc that its a lot weaker, maybe bring up dillies and opana nxt time u speak to ur doc

I do not snort my meds, I never have. I take them orally, as prescribed. The morphine is horrible, I do not like the way I feel on it AT ALL. I am very very curious as to what he's going to do next week. I need to be "normal" again. he's already tried me on dilaudid in the past & I did not like it. I am really wondering if hell put me back to my old meds.... why do u think he increased the morphine?? so he could put me back on the oxy?? or told me to double up to use the script faster so he can write a different one in a week?? I just don't know. all I know is I want what worked for me back.... I'm trying so hard to wait this week.... but its hard. anyone with similar situations?? what do u think he's gonna do with me?? as an outside opinion of course.... do u think hell put me back or is he doing this for some other reason?? opinions please I just really want some piece of mind.
:(

Well, I personally think he told you to double your morphine dose because you called him and told him you were still in horrible pain......and taking twice the pain meds you were taking before would definitely help with your pain atleast somewhat more. Its simple math. And yes, that makes your script dissapear faster so that when you see him soon, you will allready be out of yoour script and ready for a new one(whatever that new script may be).

Its really hard to tell what your doctor is gonna do ahead of time. There are so many options that it makes predictions sort of difficult. But, I highly doubt that he will keep you on the morphine because it is working so badly for you.
To be honest, my best guess is that he will put you back on your last medication since YOU were the one who suggested switching your meds in the first place. You should simply tell him that you were wrong about needing to switch and the oxy worked great and you were just worried and anxious about your meds for some reason...

.........which brings me to another point. Are you currently seeing a psychiatrist or similar doctor who you can talk to about your nervous tendencies? I have noticed throughout all of your posts that you seem to be very "on edge" and nervous, worried, etc...all the time. This is not normal for an average person. I think you may have some sort of disorder such as OCD or Anxiety disorder....maybe some form of agoraphobia. I dont know if you have seen someone about this or not, but it sounds to me like you need to be on an anxiolitic drug such as alpazolam or clonazepam, maybe diazepam. I think a benzodiazepine should help your "worry wort" behavior and take loads of stress off of your mind.
I could be mis-judging the situation here becuse all I have to go off of is the way you type, but you seem extremely on edge and that causes stress and stress can cause SOOOO many other complications.......and eventually stress can lead to early death. Im sry, i probably shouldnt say that to a "worry wort" but im just trying to help you. If you were to take a benzo and allow you to stop being so anxious all the time, you will be able to enjoy life much more and make yourself much healthier in the process. Becausse it hsa been proven that stress causes physical problems in the human body. And im sure you want to be as healthy as can be.
Maybe this is something you can bring up to your doctor.
Good luck.

If you are an oral opiate user than really you are going to have a hard time finding something that can top oxycodone. When you see your doctor just tell him the morphine isnt controlling your pain at all and you think giving the oxycodone a longer chance seems best. If he doesnt change you to something else, you need to find a new doctor I have heard in the past doctors claim that extended-release medications take time to build up and start showing their benefit, who knows, maybe that could be the case here. But when it comes to taking an opiate orally its going to be tough to find one better than oxycodone.

JamesBrown - I am not offended AT ALL by your question. I have EXTREMELY high anxiety and yes, I am on clonazepam (spelled that wrong I think) - BUT I do not take it regularly because #1 I do not want to take it in conjuction with my pain meds and #2 I don't really want to be dependent on yet another medication (even though I really, truly do need it). I try to just deal with my anxiety myself, but obviously it doesn't work that well. I've tried medication, therapy and also medication & therapy together - the therapy did nothing, but the meds did work. I really need to do something about my anxiety, but I am not happy with taking the meds. My doctor told me that that is my anxiety making me not want to take my meds, but who knows.

Update on my pain meds - after calling on Monday and being told to take double.... then waiting for a call back that I never got, so I assumed that taking double was my final answer until 1.5 weeks later.... I got a call 2.5 days later (after the office was closed btw) that my doctor wrote out my original oxy script and that I could pick it up the next day. She said that I would have to return my morphine script and that they would need to count it to make sure I didn't take more than prescribed.... which why would you tell me to double up and then wait 2 days to call me???? Doesn't make much sense!!!!!!!! It's a good thing I didn't double up and was perfect (actually under the correct amount) on the count. Long story long - I got put back to my old meds but my insurance wouldn't cover it because I'd already filled it once this month so I spent a few hundred dollars on my RX. :( Ugh whatta week!!!!!!!!

Are you serious? Your insurance wouldnt cover your medication just because you were given it more than once in a month? Thats rediculous, either you have bad insurance, or they are purposefully screwing you...because what if it is medically necessary for you to get more than one script of that medication a month?
I hate insurance companies.
