It really depends on how long you've been taking that dose. When I first got on suboxone my doctor prescribed me 16mg a day, so 16mg a day was what I took. For about a week and a half at least. Then I got on here and actually educated myself about the pharmacology of bupe, and within 4 days of taking 16mg, I was down to 4.
If you have only been on that dose for a couple of weeks, you should be fine dropping down to 8mg with little to no side effects in my opinion. You have so much bupe built up in your system it's going to take nearly a week to notice any difference from the switch anyway.
I would try and get yourself down to 4mg or less as rapidly as you can without much discomfort. Any more is just going to increase the side effects. Then from there create a detox plan with your doctor. Maybe every week you could drop 1mg until you get down to 1mg a day, then a week at 0.5mg, then a week at 0.25 mg, and drop off or even consider doing less than that for a week.
Some doctors might want you to drop off completely at doses as high as 2mg, but that is going to cause some quite noticeable withdrawal. Try and get it as low as possible before you drop off, and if you think you are tapering too fast, don't be afraid to up your dose a little or stay at the one you are at for a longer period of time
