As with judging anyone, try to avoid gross generalizations. All black people are not gangbangers, not all Native Americans are drunks, not all white people have a terrible sense of rythm (lol), and not all cops are power-hungry-gun-weilding-ball-breakers. The problem many of us have with cops is that they become jaded from their jobs, or have personal problems which they take to work (low self-esteem, racist beliefs, etc.). The difference is, when a garbage man becomes jaded with his job, it doesn't really affect the rest of us (unless they go on strike... remember NYC in the 70's). However, when a cop becomes jaded (or has personal problems) it affects the way they perceive and conduct their profession-- and that affects all of us. Then again, some are just plain assholes. Either way, a few bad cops with terrible attitudes can completely destroy the way we feel about all cops. It's a thankless, shit job... and, personally, I don't know how anyone could do it. Yet, I am not ready to remove emergency numbers from my speed dial. In my opinion, it's a case by case basis. They don't make the laws, but they must uphold them. I didn't like all of the policies of the University I used to teach at, in fact, some of them were completely fucking ridiculous. But, I did my best in the environment I was in, and kept fighting for change. One last thing... I think comparing the police to the SS is an unfair and easy analogy. Although, I have had the unpleasant experience of meeting a few who would have fit nicely into those uniforms. Just my opinion, for what it's worth... and maybe it's not worth much.
