So. Is the PS3 gonna bomb?

there is no way I am payin 600 dollars for a gaming system. I rather buy a brand new top of the line pc with all the extras for 500 and just attach it to my tv monitor. I just want the controller that comes wit 360. Wireless is sweet.

I'm not paying for a PS3, simply because every single other console I bought from them broke down. They make shit products. I'll stick with xbox from now on.

I'd get one if I had the money. Is Squaresoft still contracting with Sony?
Hahaha, look that little bit up on google and see all the bitching going on among the geeks. ;) =D

Hmm... that's the complete opposite experience from what I have had. I have bought many products from Sony (TV, 3 mobile phones, alarm clock, PlayStation (original 1995 UK model that still works!) + peripherals, PS2, PSP, digital camera) and the only thing to go wrong was one of the phones.

^ Ditto, the only problems I've heard are the lasers wearing out, and they are replaceable.

I think the biggest hurdle for Sony will be getting its Blu-ray media format off the ground. Sony are the kings of introducing dud media.

A list of the media that sony have pioneered that failed:

- Beta (superior to VHS but still bombed due to lack of support)
- DAT (total failure)
- Mini-disc (it arguably worked as a storage medium but flat out bombed as a commercial music medium)
- UMD (has recently failed as a movie medium for the PSP)

Sony are arrogant (and stupid) enough to think that they can launch standards that will be readily adopted due to their standing as a quality electronics company. Almost every standard they release flops but they insist of trying again and again.

The problem is that their media formats usually suck. Take the UMD as a movie medium for example. UMDs are more expensive than DVDs, have no capacity for extras and are playable only on the PSP. Anyone with a PSP and a memory stick can simply buy a DVD for less and rip it thus giving them all the benefit of a portable movie and none of the downsides of the UMD. Why Sony thought the format would work is beyond me. How such a massive and otherwise successful company can keep making absolutely moronic decisions to launch useless media platforms is beyond me.

Given Sony's history, I see no indication that Blu-ray will be a successful platform in anything other than the games market. In this day and age, consumers expect consoles to do more than simply play games. They expect them to support movie and music mediums as well. The success of the Blu-ray platform as more than a games medium is thus absolutely crucial to the future of the PS3. I for one will be waiting and closely watching this before I part with my hard-earned.

The ironic thing is that Sony started this with the PS1 also playing CD's, and the PS2 also playing dvd's.

And it's going to be what kills them.

eh...imo every other playstation sucked, not a single good playstation-only title, and theres nothing about it that isnt beat outright by xbox extra features. i think its safe to assume that ps3 will suck compared to xbox and nintendo. On its own im sure its great, but considering how much money u have to invest in console systems, i see more people going with microsoft's products.

therye gonna have to do something to beat the competition with xbox. Ninentendo has one thing going for them which is being around longer (longer loyal customer base), and having a style of games all its own that neither PS or XboX have. Im not really a console fan in any regard, but everyone and their mother has either xbox or PS/PS2 and i know quite a few ppl with xbox 360 allready, and thus i have a good bit of (((stoned))) console gaming exposure.

^i couldn't not agree more.

- lots of good ps/ps2 only titles
- xbox360 won't be hard to beat spec wise
- ps has better tradition with developers.
-ps has better reverse compatibily

disclamer: i got an xbox 1, and don't plan on getting xbox360

i'm buying it

the games look awesome (GTR 4 HD - Brothers in Arms, Warhawk assassins creed, the list goes on). I can't wait for GTA - with that amount of power (there are supercomputers out there that aren't as powerful as the PS3) its going to be amazing

It outputs 1080p on a HDMI....

It has a BluRay player, a 20GB harddrive and a built in ethernet 1000. even with the cut down ver its still going to output a 1080p via componet (which means all you have to do get is get good cabling)

When most bluray players are still going to cost $1000+ (and you don't get a gaming machine with that) its going to be easily a justifable purchase

All the games i saw looked great and far superior to the 360 (except for Fight night 3 or whatever its called).

Uh... no they dont? Ive never met anybody who said that was a critical part of buying a console gaming system. I mean sure, the PS2 operating as a DVD player is awesome, but other than that... i really dont think people care much if it plays mp3's, holds pictures or whatever.

I guess suchthings are usable if you allready dont have a PC which would certianly put you in a minority.

And "lots" of good PS2 titles? ARE you kidding me? Evertime i go to Gamestop for EBgames i see a big wall full of 95% worthless crap games that hardly anybody ever played to begin with. Im with DD on this one, i really do hope the system bombs as i blame sony for single handedly destroying the quality of video games over the last 10 years. They managed to sucker in a new generation of gamers with the PS1... and the poor suckers bought it just because of the name sony... and they still have NO CONCEPT of what good games really are. I grew up with an atari and a NES and SNES, i dunno, maybe im just too oldschool when it comes to games... but i will always think SONY completley corrupted the quality of video games. May the PS3 be buried next to the ET atari games.

i said ps/ps2. i have a ps with lots of good games you couldnt get on other systems.

grand turismo, rez, ico, parapaa the rapper - just some of my favs.

and no i didnt get suckered into the ps2, i got the xbox.

i can't comment on the ps3 because it aint out yet, but its got to be better than the xbox360

I loved the PS games, don't know where people getting off saying they don't have any good ones. METAL GEAR SOLID ? GTA ? Tekkin ? They have great games, but the XBOX has great games too - better controllers - cheaper - same games are available on PS System/Microsoft - and for those of us who don't have an HDTV yet the quality difference won't be that noticable.

I guess if the PS3 software lineup is incredible after launch the system could possibly establish itself. But the price is absurd--it's a serious turn-off for casual gamers, kids/teens, etc.

We'll see though, certainly Sony has the marketing muscle to pull off the impossible.

edit: PS had tons of great games and I think it's silly to blame Sony for changes in the console market. I feel like the opposite is true: Sony helped the industry to grow and helped gaming to be taken seriously by lots of people. More credibility=more money=more resources=better games. It's not the case anymore that a few guys in a basement can make a game, because of that more overhead is essential for games to be developed.

Also, I've had no problems with my PS or my PS2. My PS still works and it's like 10 years old now.

ya. i'll get one. might as well seel sony the little part of my soul they dont have yet.

the only reason that betamax failed is because sony wouldnt let the porn companys use it. if they are smart, and let them have access to the blu-ray, it think it will be all good.

minidisc was the shit, i loved it. i'm sad that no one picked it up.

and blu-ray IS the better standard, imho.

OT: beta failed for a few reasons: it was a closed format that sony refused to share, they didn't understand the importance of content-licensing which meant that at first you couldn't rent anything on beta (and this is when movies cost upwards of $100, meaning no one was buying them) and video rental stores were loathe to repurchase everything in another format, and lastly it was an inferior format for home use.

I agree. I want a games console first and formost. I have never watched a DVD on my PS2 but that's because I had a DVD player before it came out. The fact that the PS3 has Blu-Ray is a big bonus to me though :)

i think that's a bit harsh. I think what Sony did with the PSX was brilliant. It pushed the gaming world along and bought the arcade into my home. The first batch of PSX games were pretty groundbreakiing, I seem to recall... Ridge Racer, wipEout, Destruction Derby... Sony certainly did have an idea about good games and (if my memory serves me correctly) they worked very closely with the game developers. Plus Sony were smart by putting games onto CD while Nintendo were still insisting on using cartridges and charging 50% more!

I don't think the standard of games has gone down over the past 10 years becuase there was plenty of crap around in the early nineties and eighties too! :) I do think though, that a lot of games thesedays are over-hyped and promise so much while delivering so little. It's daft solely blaming Sony, IMO. :p

- DAT (total failure)

I realise that DAT never took off for home use, but a lot of music professionals used it and it was the choice for computer data storage for many years.
