That's understandable.
My older brother had pneumonia this year and took a big break from smoking, he actually quit for around a month and was able to quit smoking cigarettes for good. Although having pneumonia sucked good things came from it (probably not very common in most cases lol). He smokes weed now fine without any negative side effects.
I had bronchitis a few months ago, and that really slowed me down from smoking. Even after I felt better, I still couldn't really smoke just because I was so congested with gross shit and smoking made me produce that nasty phlegm crap way more. I didn't bother with edibles and it was before I got my vaporizer.
With time, I'm sure you'll lungs will feel better and you will be able to smoke. Honestly being a first timer, I wouldn't go with edibles just because they give a complete different effect that tend to make people panic more because it's much more of a physical body stone. It also lasts longer, so if you don't enjoy it you'll have ride out the experience much longer than if you just smoked. Also, you'll feel the smoked effects immediate and edibles it's pretty much a guessing game. In my own opinion, I think you should just smoke it, but it's your call. I think with smoking there's a lot less room for error especially it being your first time. In short term, smoking marijuana is actually known to open up air ways (you can verify this with a quick google search) but long term effects of smoking surely won't help your situation out there.
