Sleep paralysis ?!?!?! - MEGA MERGED

I've had sleep paralysis for years - it can ge absolutely terrifying! Last April, I fell in my kitchen on some spilled milk, pinched my c-1 nerve - attempting to fix it leads to paralysis then death. The same nerve Christopher Reeves pinched when he fell off the horse.
Anyway, this morning my nerve was pinched from sleeping wrong, and I woke up paralyzed from that!
So, now do I have 2 of them? One I can go into while asleep, the other I notice when I wake up - what happens if I get both of them at the same night???
 
I have the same problem...not every time i use opiates but everytime it happens...at least in my adult life...opiates have played a role....I can't snap myself out of it generally until the insanity ends on its own..Scary fucking shit man.....i wish i could snap out of it...what is the nature of your visitors?
 
Sleep Paralysis and other disturbing sleep problems

I suppose my history of sleep problems started as a kid, I guess when I was like 6 or so. I have/had the following sleep issues:
1. Nightmares and strange dreams- very violent, vivid, abnormal ones. I can go into detail about a few of them, if you want, but I won't do so unless someone asks!
2. Hallucinations- These stopped a few years ago, but I'd get them upon waking up. They were different than the hallucinations that accompany sleep paralysis, as I was fully mobile and able to move around as I pleased. It was just stuff like spiders, auditory hallucinations (it was always a voice saying my name and it would wake me up because it was so loud), people standing in my room, faces, etc.
3. Sleepwalking- To my knowledge, I've only done this a few times, and only when I was a kid. Just random stuff like walking into my mom's room and asking for a pencil or whatever. Nothing bad or scary. Like I said, this stopped a long time ago, so it's no longer a problem.
4. Abnormal sleeping patters and daytime sleepiness- This started in the military, when they purposely fucked with my schedule. Make me work nights and then come in and work the next day, etc. Now I fall asleep at strange times- sometimes way too early and sometimes I'll have insomnia and not be able to sleep until the sun comes up the next morning. Sometimes I actually won't be able to sleep for two days straight, and I'll be awake all night for two nights and days in a row. It's completely erratic too... there is absolutely no rhyme or reason to it. I can sleep all day and then fall asleep at 9 pm. On the flip side, other times I can wake up super early like 5 or 6 am, and then not be able to sleep that night. I'll use the last few days as an example, so you can get a sort of visual understanding.
Saturday: Fell asleep around 8 pm, woke up around 12:30 am. Finally went back to sleep at 7 am, then slept until freaking three in afternoon.
Sunday: Fell asleep at 9 pm (despite having slept the day away), woke up the next morning at 6:30 am.
Monday: Fell asleep at 5:30 am (despite having woken up at 6:30), woke up at 10 am because I had to be at an appointment.
Tuesday: Fell asleep at 10 am (technically Wed. morning... and again, despite having wokenup kind of early and only getting a few hours of sleep), woke up at 2 in the afternoon.
See how out of whack that all is? I've tried supplements like melatonin to help regulate my schedule... worked for a while, but not so much anymore. This is probably the worst problem out of all of them because it's directly affecting my health, productivity, energy, and every day life.
5. Sleep Paralysis. This started about a year ago, and I believe the combination of Suboxone and Xanax is what triggered it, because I had NEVER had anything even remotely close to sleep paralysis until I started those medications... and it started very, very soon after I started taking them both consecutively. Here's what bothers me about the sleep paralysis: like my sleeping schedule, it's very erratic. It comes and goes. I'll get it frequently for a month or so, it will stop completely for a few months maybe, then start up again. And each time it starts up again, it gets progressively worse. I'm starting to get worried because it's happening almost every night now, and sometimes more than once a night. It's become very hard to breathe, it's as though my lungs are paralyzed just like everything else. This freaks me out because this is a recent thing, I never had this problem when I first started getting SP episodes. Now it happens every time. I've heard of people dying during extreme cases of SP episodes because it was so severe that even their heart muscles became paralyzed and stopped beating. I don't want my SP to keep getting progressively worse until it ends up on that level, but that's what I'm afraid is happening. :/ Also, lying on my stomach or side instead of my back or keeping the light on used to work for a little while, but now I can get it no matter what position I'm in, what time of day it is, or how bright the room is.

So, I have a few questions. One, should I be worried about the way my SP seems to be getting worse? I don't want my heart to become paralyzed one day too! Which brings me to my next question... I'm wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing, and whether you've found anything that can be done about it, or at least help alleviate it so it isn't as severe? Even if I can't stop it completely, is there a way I can ensure it doesn't continue to get worse?
And lastly, is it possible that some people are just more susceptible to sleeping disorders than others? I feel like I have/have had in the past an abnormal amount of sleeping disorders. Is the fact that I have so many sleep disorders at all something to be worried about? It's not as though every single one of them affect my day to day life, I can deal with most of them alright, but I'm not sure if it points to a bigger problem, something like brain/neurological damage. I'm seriously hoping not, but is that possible? Also, is there ANYTHING that can be done about the nightmares? A lot of them are really bad!!!

Any suggestions/advice/information would be very much appreciated! I'd love to hear what other people have to say about this... and I'd also love to hear other people's experiences if they want to share, specifically about the vivid, violent nightmares, the completely out of whack sleeping schedule, and the sleep paralysis.

If there are any mods reading this- I know I talked about SP quite a bit and asked a few questions about it, but the topic I started was mostly about my sleep disturbances as a whole. I was questioning the nightmares, weird sleeping schedule, and everything else ALONG with the SP. Is there any possible way my topic can be moved somewhere else? If it's going to cause an inconvenience, then don't worry about it. I'm just wondering, since thread topic is about sleep paralysis specifically and my topic was about more sleep disorders than just SP. It's okay if you don't want it to be it's own thread, I'm fine with that, but if it isn't too much trouble then maybe it could at least be moved to a thread that covers sleeping disorders as a whole? I can go back and edit it to shorten it up and make it more relevant to just sleeping disorders in general, if you need me to... like take away the descriptions and some other stuff so that it doesn't seem like I'm just trying to emphasize on one thing. Granted, I should probably do that anyway. It's way too long and some of the stuff I wrote probably isn't necessary information to have in order to answer my questions lol. Or I can start a new thread that just lists the sleep issues I'm dealing with at the moment and the questions I have about them... make my topic a bit more generalized and put less emphasis on SP.

Anyway I'm going to edit my post now so that it gets my questions across more clearly, and then you can do whatever needs to be done with it... although I would very much appreciate if it could be moved elsewhere! I'm also a bit worried that my questions are going to go unanswered, since this thread has been dead for a year now lol :p Thanks!

I think this is going to be my automatic first question for any question now:

What do you eat on a day-to-day basis? What you put into your body for energy and nutrition is quite possibly THE most important factor in how your body works.

Question two: Do you exercise? After quickly skimming through your post at 1 in the morning, I didn't see anything about background on yourself other than the problems you are having.
 
Sleep Paralysis:

This is something that I have dealt with for about 17 years. It is very frightening indeed!! But your heart won't stop--the muscles that are "paralyzed" are only our voluntary muscles. It's a function that our body uses so that whilst dreaming, we don't act out our dreams. What you want to research to learn more is the term HYPNAGOGIC. Do look that up, and you will find a slew of information.

Something that I have learned to do is, while in the middle of my sleep paralysis/nightmare, make myself wake up enough to spring out of bed. I get up, go out into the light and eat something sweet. It's like I interrupt the whole process. I notice that I have SP more if I am too hot in bed.

Again, your heart is not affected by any paralytic effect. Your lungs are not muscular, and your diaphragm is controlled by the autonomic nervous system--involuntary. You will not die, even though the absolute horror of the situation makes you convinced you will. I know how frightening this is, hopefully you can find lifestyle choices to change and improve on to lessen or eliminate this awfully sucky phenomenon. :)
 
I wish it was as simple as just a lifestyle change... like diet or exercise, like simply_live mentioned. That's why I didn't mention diet or exercise habits by the way... I didn't feel like it was relevant since they're the same as they've always been. The sleep paralysis didn't start until I went on Suboxone/Xanax, I started them both around the same time.

But since two people mentioned it, I guess it wouldn't hurt to talk about it anyway :)

As far as diet... I try to make healthy choices, but I also probably eat more processed/frozen foods than I should. I try to balance that out by taking vitamin supplements. I've always had a fast metabolism, not sure if that has anything to do with it though. Exercise... I do cardio 2-3 times a week, and crunches/lunges/other basic exercises throughout the day or whenever I get the chance. My diet and exercise regimens probably aren't as wonderful as they should be, but they're not horrible... and it's remained consistent over the past few years. I don't think that's the problem, but if there are certain foods you know of, or vitamins I can add to my diet that would help, then by all means I will gladly eat them lol.
 
Had sleep paralysis for the second time last night, a bit scary but not overly so. I hope next time I get it I'll be able to turn it into a lucid dream.
 
How about instead of getting those frozen dinners, try bringing pasta with you that's already been cooked with sauce and veggies in it? The chemicals they add to frozen dinners and processed foods is astounding. When you're on the run, try bringing fresh fruit or even dried fruit with you and maybe some nuts or seeds. It's always worth a try to clean up your diet. Your exercise regime seems okay enough to not be a direct cause of sleep paralysis. I'm going to go look sometime this weekend to see if there are any other direct causes of sleep paralysis.

Have you not considered a possible relationship between starting those drugs and your sleep issues? If I were you, I would look at a few things and weigh the pros and cons:

- How much of an impact does not taking Suboxone and/or Xanax have on my life currently? In the long run?

- How much of an impact does not sleeping well have on my life currently? In the long run?

When I was doing copious amounts of drugs (Suboxone included recreationally), I thought I needed those drugs to make me function halfway normally. I was on the fence about seeing a doctor and getting something like Xanax. Decided to sober up from everything and after six months, I could say that I felt a lot better. Yes, it took six whole months and it wasn't a quick fix like you get from a pill that might take six weeks to kick in, but all in all I feel better in every way.
 
One step ahead of ya there, addictivepersona- I'm already seeing an addiction specialist! :) He's been great so far too... I've made quite a bit of progress since I started seeing him, so I'm happy with the way things are going. It's not something I want to rush. And yes, the sleep paralysis IS a direct result of the meds I'm taking. I'm assuming it's mostly the Suboxone. Opiates are known to cause sleep paralysis, so I'm 9.99% sure that's what it is!

Simply_live- Oh I don't eat frozen dinners all the time, I just indulge every once in a while. Specifically the Stouffer's Mac & Cheese and the mashed potatoes & meatloaf. I maybe have them once a week, if that. I like to treat myself with them sometimes because they are amazing. <3 Otherwise, I try to make sure my lunches and dinners are balanced. I always have some sort of fruit with lunch and vegetable with dinner. Juice is my absolute favorite thing in the world, so I drink that a lot. I'm not very good with my milk and water intake though, but I'm slowly trying to improve cause I know those things are important. Ohhh and I love nuts and dried fruits... especially dried bananas and mangos... I'll choose those to snack on over anything else every time if I have them around!
 
I searched this thread because I swore i'd replied in here!

I haven't had a case of SP for years, but I used to get it almost every night when i was using drugs (methamphetamine/MDMA/GHB) quite heavily. It was during this time that i was going through a period of (at the time) undiagnosed depression and major anxiety over a number of areas in my life (which looking back i was abusing drugs to cover up) - so couple the insomnia/other sleep issues i had with SP and you had one terrified young woman (i was in my early 20s during this time). I'll be honest - i'd spoken to people who had advised me of the link between SP & lucid dreaming, but, at the time i didn't care about lucid dreaming, i just wanted it to stop. Over a decade has passed, and i think now i'd take a more pragmatic view on sleep paralysis if i experienced it, and would try to use it to achieve a lucid dream state.

I'm going to assume you meant "99.9%". :P But seriously though, if you're that certain your drug use has caused your "disturbing sleep problems" and sleep paralysis, as you put it, don't you think you should lay off the drugs? I know that is easier said than done: You're hearing from someone who has quit cigarettes, heroin, pot (yes, I was psychologically addicted), suboxone, lortabs, and a few other drugs basically cold turkey. While I'm not suggesting you quit them cold turkey as it can do physical harm depending on your dosage, why haven't you quit if you are fairly certain your issues arose from your drug use?

lol whoops, yeah I meant 99.9% haha! Hey I wrote that after a night of no sleep and while I was extremely stressed out, it happens! I guess I probably should have made it a bit more clear though as to what I meant- firstly, the nightmares and hallucinations upon waking started wayyy before I ever tried any sort of drug. The ONLY thing the meds caused was the sleep paralysis. It's possible that they add to the weird sleeping schedule as well however, even though that was going on long before I got on Suboxone too... but now that I think about it, it did get a bit worse after I started Subs and Xanax. As for your other question, well, that's quite simple really. I have tried to quit Subs, even tried quitting opiates twice way before I went on Subs, but I always relapsed. The Xanax I haven't quit because I genuinely need them- I have really severed GAD- and also for the more obvious reason, because it's dangerous to quit cold turkey. I am in the process of tapering off the Xanax and transitioning to a different, non-benzo however. So I'm getting there. Either way I think the Subs are the main problem in regards to my sleep paralysis, and not the Xanax. It's really hard for me to get off of opiates because I was using them to self-medicate for a long time, and the issues that led me to start abusing opiates in the first place are much, much larger than sleep paralysis. I need to work through those issues I just really don't want to relapse again (I mean the last time I relapsed I only took 5 Vicodin and ended up in the ICU for a few days for tylenol poisoning). I know I don't yet have the tools necessary to deal with my problems without popping some pills or whatever; I'm going to counselling to learn how to do that though, and also just listening to what my addiction specialist tells me to do. I'm prescribed the Xanax and Suboxone for legitimate reasons- I actually need them, and I don't ever abuse either of them. I take them exactly as described, and sometimes less. But even so, I just feel like it's best for me to just play on the safe side right now... I want to make sure I'm absolutely ready before I attempt to quit again. The sleep paralysis is really the very least of my worries in the grand scheme of things. It's just bothersome and scary, so I was hoping there was something I could do to relieve it aside from stopped my meds CT. I guess there's not, but oh well. I should be off of them both hopefully within the next few months. I'll just suck it up and deal until then unless someone happens to come along and post an earth-shattering revelation :)
 
I had SP twice in the same month, the first time these weird sounds from next to me woke me up but I was paralyzed and couln'dt roll over. I could only move my eyes but it did feel like someone was next to me and after a few mins they I heard it/them/whoever leave and then I was able to move again. I live alone and I thought someone broke in and I was being robbed or something.

Second time was more scary I woke from having an awesome dream of being in bed with some beautiful girl, to seeing some demon floating over me in my room. I asked who are you? I got the response "angel of death". then a few mins later it dissapeared and i coudlnt go back to sleep for hours that shit scared the fuck out of me.

Haven't had any SP since or ever in my life before these 2 times.
