From someone whose had to deal with insomnia for mutiple years now and has spoken to multiple doctors/psychiatrists about it:
Its definitely worth taking some time to do your own research, write some notes if you need, and make list of things you want to specifically talk to your doc/psych about. It wasn't worth it for me to have to keep going in for new appointments every 2 weeks when the next drug on the doc's list didn't work and then switch docs and start from scratch. So, for instance if you said you can't get benzos because of your psych being an arse... Have a serious conversation with him/her. Ask why.
I'm not saying Benzos are the final solution, you don't want to go down the road to addiction there, but its worth your time to have a serious conversation with your doctor about, it might be that you are just naturally tolerant to sedatives so its not worth it to you to even go down that route (hypnotic benzos)
