Alright, I've been taking Diphenhydramine for the last 3-4 years every night....usually on average 75mg....I want to stop....I've tried melatonin and 5HTP.....I've tried pretty much everything...I want to go to the doctor and get prescribed ambien....I've done plenty of research and I'm just wondering what is safer for me?

Being on ambien or whatever other prescription sleep aid they give me....

or

Being on 75-150mg of diphen...

Thank you BL.<3:\

In terms of safety, zolpidem (ambien) should only be used in the short term. Over the long term, tolerance and physical dependence will develop and it will no longer be effective.

Tolerance usually develops to the sedating antihistamines as well, and the best way to deal with this is to just take a short break from them. Even a few days can lower the tolerance there.

One possibility to talk with your doctor about - Rozerem (ramelteon) works in a similar way to melatonin in the brain and can be used long-term without issues. I know you've tried melatonin, but OTC supplements aren't meaningfully regulated in terms of potency and its possible that the over the counter formulation you used wasn't effective.

I think I might try 0 sugar intake and 5htp + melatonin and a 5 day break from DPH....then hopefully I can turn that 5 day break into a forever break and get prescribed ambien and use it only when I really really need it.

thank you,.

Naturally tolerance increases with both but it rises quicker with Ambien. Ambien should only be taken for 7-10 days or you'll experience rebound insomnia. If you take it longer you "may" also experience some physical withdrawals, although much more minor than benzodiazepines. I take DPH (75mg) for sleep also because I can't get a hold of benzodiazepines or Z-Drugs. I wonder how bad it is to my body also.

I can get benzo's but I only use them to get messed up b/c I have to buy them off the street...I'd never waste them on sleep lol

^haha, i always feel so salty swallowing big handfuls of pills only in an attempt to defeat insomnia. not because i am wasting pills, but because it increases my tolerance and makes them less effective for what i need them for most, GAD. but when you can't sleep, it quickly becomes priority number one.

I think I might try 0 sugar intake
^ a good idea. also, if you are not already: no caffeine and daily exercise.

good luck man. i have had insomnia issues for the past few months. They gave me Trazodone and i dont like it. didnt really do anything for me other then make me a little hazey and tired, but i still couldnt sleep.

i used those valiums for sleep that i was talking about :p

I wouldnt even try ambien. two of my best friends had taken it and at some point, subconsciously and unwillingly taken alot more. Both were loud enough to attract attention from their parents. One went to the hospital and got his stomach pumped, and the others parents knew he was fucked up. neither of them remember anything. That just doesent sound fun to me.

I actually feel kind of tired...I got a 7 hour Diphen-sleep last night..woke up @ 545am...drank coffee at 7am....ate steak and took a 5HTP at 245ish.......that's about it....it's now 8:15 and like usual I'm not hungry and of course bored.

My problem is STAYING asleep, not so much getting to sleep even though I still have problems with that. I've taken hydroxyzine with DPH and that doesn't work. I tried the Remeron last night, just one tablet, and it didn't really help. It made it a little easier to get back to sleep but I still woke like every 1 hour and a half. I think I'm going to call my psychiatrist tomorrow if this doesn't work and request some Ambien for just a few days. He won't give them to me for any longer than that because he knows that I have addiction problems.

I didnt want to start a new thread because I thought this is relevant enough:

Ok so I am seeing my GP today because i am looking for an alternative to temazepam as I need to take 2 sometimes 3 x 10mg pills to sleep and am prescribed 1. I need something SHORT acting (4 hours) and obviously it must be a hypnotic benzo.

Any suggestions?

If I don't take anything, it takes me about 45 mins - 2 hours of "trying" to fall asleep...I need no noise and pitch black...with dipes, I swallow about 150mg all at once and about 2 hours later it's cotton-mouth and sleep time...I'm quiting cigs + diphen...this should be fun.

@88brenno

Try diphenydramine lol, or get a hold of them Z drugs....

I have tried zopiclone, hated it for the taste it left in my mouth for the rest of the night/next morning. Will see what the GP has to offer, and maybe consider DP...

You can give Triazolam (Halcion) a try, it has the second shortest half-life of all the benzodiazepines, even the non-benzodiazepines. VERY short acting. Like 2 hours. Your only other options I'm aware of are the Z-Drugs like Sonata and Ambien (2-3 hour half-life).

Am very wary of trying new sleeping meds, will any of those make you sleep walk? I have heard some bad stories.... Dont know if its those particular meds though.

I've used diph and dimen, as well as other antihistamines for a long period of time, and eventually developed heart palpitations and other shit that I don't remember now...it was years ago. It drains your body of alot of shit to use them frequently.

There have been stories of sleep walking with Ambien but chances are it won't happen to you. Very rare occurrences.

My aunt was prescribed Ambien & it put her in a dizzy alcohol drunk state. Ive also heard from her son that she would sleep walk sometimes.

Try taking something natural. Try some hot tea or something, anything beats sleep-aids/sleeping pills. Ive had insomnia before & I never took anything for it.

I am already dependant on benzos, so thats not really an option. I have tried supplementing with magnesium and valerian and a couple others that dont come to mind atm.

I tried coming off Nitrazepam by going halves (5mg pills), but its too long acting to w/d from so back on the mazzies and using more than I should.

OT but i also have in my posession many 2mg valium but their not hypnotic (I tried 5 pills = 10mg) and didn't sleep. I cant afford to waste my Valium like that.
