Sentenced to death for just over 2kg Cannabis

Actually, it has not been "confirmed to cause psychosis". That's just bollocks. Stop spouting shit you clearly have no idea about. It's people like you which spread this bullcrap. You'd have been one of the ones claiming cannabis killed brain cells after those monkey experiments back in the 70's.

There has been a tenuous link between development of schizophrenia and excessive cannabis consumption. This link is tenuous, because we cannot prove whether it's simply the sort of people with underlying mental conditions are drawn to the appeals of cannabis, or whether there's something deeper going on.

Worst case scenario, cannabis can exacerbate an undetected underlying condition and bring about full schizophrenia earlier than it might otherwise have shown itself.

Best case scenario, cannabis has NO link to schizophrenia at all.

Cannabis is not harmless, no, and the people that are claiming it is are as ignorant as you are. Please don't go repeating that bullshit you hear from the Government though - there is nothing which shows cannabis causes schizophrenia. Nothing.

I agree cases involving schizophrenia are still under great debate but I never mentioned schizophrenia but psychosis. And I also agree that individuals who become schizophrenic while on marijuana may be due to a genetic variant in their bodies. But psychotic symptoms do arise in healthy test subjects who are exposed to THC, I'm not saying cannabis is the one to completely blame, but it is far more dangerous to believe cannabis is completely safe. It's a complicating topic, and the fact that it's debated quite heavily shows you that it's more than just a herb.

I'm not disputing that. I never said cannabis was completely safe, or just a herb. I also didn't say it's been confirmed to cause psychosis.

Psychosis is just a state of mind which is different from normality. Psyche - the mind Osis - abornmality.

By its very definition cannabis brings about a temporary state of psychosis. People wouldn't take it if it did nothing to their state of mind. Cannabis, LSD, Psilocin, DMT - they're all states of psychosis.

Show me proof that cannabis use has CAUSED a permanent change in someone's psyche.

Not proof that whilst someone has had THC pumped into them on an IV drip, they go a bit nuts because they've also had none of the other anti-anxiety cannabinoids found within the plant.

Not proof that whilst someone is under the influence of THC, their actions can be considered psychotic.

Not anecdotal evidence, anyone can fabricate that, show me a study which backs up your statements, otherwise accept that whilst cannabis is NOT harmless, there is very little scientific data to show that it's dangerous.

Common sense to research the laws of your own country before intentionally breaking laws that are punishable by death. Guess bud must be a real niche market over there due to the zero tolerance approach by the state resulting in a lack of dealers.

That said, definitely don't agree with his sentence. IMO only murderers and sex pests deserve that type of punishment.

I'm sorry, but many of you are either retarded or trying very hard to be.

This issue has

ABSOLUTELY

NOTHING

To do with religion. I find it DISGUSTING how many of you take any chance you can, no matter how FUCKING IRRELEVANT, to hate Muslims.

And although I think there is a lot that is wrong with the southern parts of Southeast Asia, to be absolutely fair, you cannot enter Malaysia without signing a customs form, and you cannot sign the customs form without reading the big warning in red block letters at the top and bottom that reads "Death for Drug Traffickers in Malaysia."

I mean I love my drugs as much as you do, but I never carried any drugs on me either time because I'm just not that stupid.

Not proof that it causes permanent damage to a person's psyche, I never made that assertion since most psychosis is treatable and whatever permanent damage on the brain has to do with the psychotic symptoms themselves rather than the THC.

That study shows that psychosis did develop in individuals with no prior history of mental illnesses, but psychosis did arise in test subjects more frequently that did have a history for obvious reasons. I believe marijuana isn't a big dangerous drug that creates permanent mental damage on everyone, but it does create psychosis in some individuals who seem to be as healthy as anyone can be. But I don't believe there are any evidence pointing towards THC as the primary culprit, so I'm basically in agreement with you that there aren't enough evidence to say one or the other since this could all be interpreted as conjecture.

Yes you are complty right; like I said before just look at china as an example. Its a non-religious country and look at its drug policies. These countries governments and fucked in so many ways. It's not just stuff related to drugs.

+1, I'm disgusted by the amount of xenophobic ignorance in this thread.. Why are people ignoring the fact that Thailand and Singapore (both predominantly Buddhist) have equally strict penalties for drug possession, if not more severe?

Singapore's "mandatory death sentence" for cannabis possession is 480 g / 17 oz. That is a hell of a lot less than the 2kg in this article. Not only this, but between 1990 and 2004 something like 500 people were executed for drug possession..

Are you shocked that a non-Islamic nation is just as, if not more evil when it comes to their drug laws?

You, my friend, aren't looking at the big picture. The government in Malaysia is mostly to my knowledge, muslim. It just happens to be that most "muslim" ran governments have harsh drug laws such as execution. So tell me how it has NOTHING to do with religion.
Granted other southeastern countries have similar drug laws, but none as extreme as "muslim" ran governments.

So it is just a coincidence that many other SEA countries, including the Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam, also routinely execute drag traffickers, despite the fact that they are religiously worlds apart from Malaysia and Indonesia? It is clearly a cultural and moral attitude in that part of the world which is quite independent of religion.
Sorry to repeat myself. How are the other countries less extreme than the Muslim ones? The death penalty is the death penalty.

^ I think islamophobia is so deeply set in some of these peoples minds that any rational argument is just going to be a waste of words to them.

You're right, I just keep repeating myself.

At the risk of derailing this thread entirely, mind if I ask you why you've also lumped buddhism in with a bunch of ostensibly "evil" abrahamic religions?

ALL religions are in my view just another means of control really. It does not matter if it is Christianity, islam, etc. Such is my beliefs anyway.

They arent less extreme at all. China's drug laws are just as stupid, backwards and barbarics as Malaysia and fuck knows they have nothing to do with islam. It has more to do with culture there and a totaltarian government then religion and i guess that is the case in alot of SE countries. Just because it is culture does not make it any less wrong though.

Oh and im not islamaphobic i am just of the opinion that it is as fucked as christianity is and i know from a few incidents growing up just how fucked up that is. I also have more then a idea of how fucked up islamic culture can be from having friends who grew up in muslim households.

I hate how after reading an article like this, people come to the conclusion that religion is the problem. Tyrannical and abusive governments are the problem. The majority of people's religious beliefs are harmless. The members of a mosque aren't going to run around massacring pot smokers, regardless of any irrational beliefs they may have about marijuana. The government, however, can and will hand out ridiculous sentences because of drug possession.

Yes, religion is a means of control, but government even moreso. Who do you feel more controlled by, your neighborhood church/mosque/etc, or your government?

Also, having several Muslim friends, some of the comments on this thread are just uncalled for. Confusing the beliefs of Muslim extremists with those that most Muslims have is like confusing the average Christian with the Westboro Baptist Church. My friend leaves class early to go pray during the day and skips meals if there's no halal food available - these actions and beliefs are totally irrational and unnecessary, but the kid's smart as fuck and would never hurt a fly.

What about Taoism then? A philosophy/religion whose entire school of thought is not to be controlled, to be beautifully and blissfully free?

Also, I'd be interested to see how Buddhism is controlling. Never found that myself.

I notice again, you give examples of two Abrahamic religions. Out of interest, what's your experience/knowledge of Eastern religions like those mentioned above?

Sorry for all the questions, feel free to tell me to fuck off, I'm just genuinely curious. :)

Though not directed at me, I'd like to give my two cents:

I guess a good generalization would be that centralized religions are controlling, whereas something as inherently decentralized as Taoism cannot be controlling because of the nature of the religion. That said, I've always found Taoism to be more a philosophy than a religion, though I understand that there is a more "religious" version of Taoism that is commonly practiced in Asia.

It depends on the type of Buddhism. There are several kind of Buddhism, and it's hard to make a sweeping generalization about Buddhism. I've always found Tibetan Buddhism to be too controlling a religion for my tastes. Some of the stuff those monks put themselves through because of their religion is sort of awful.

Seems the digression caused by blaming a specific religious movement within a Government has blinded us to the simple truth ... absent strict separation of Church and State, the two are virtually indistinguishable ... both seek absolute control over its subjects' lives and minds through the enforcement of a single strict ethical rule set.

As such, drug laws anywhere in the world are essentially all the same, so long as there is a Law at all ... the punishment varies only in one's perception of its degree.
