Security Guards - Your rights

Security guards get away with what they do because no one will argue with them. If you’re waiting in line for ages to get into your favourite club chances are when the bouncer stops and searches you you're not going to kick up a fuss and risk not getting in so you let it slide.

Talking to my friend who is a crowd controller the actual powers of a security guard are quite limited. They have no power as such, can only act if acted upon and main objective is to move people along and keep people apart, i.e. prevent trouble.

However most security guards get excited and fight and abuse power they don't have because most people are too scared to say anything or don't know their rights. Only when people like the great cricketer we all know and love are lost do people question these thugs.

Urbanhog - I'm in Sydney.

I've always believed that a lot of these bouncers live for Saturday night. The only time they ever feel like their doing something important. They have the right to refuse anyone and you can really see it gets to their ego.

Good post Fry-d-, I agree entirely.

TranceNation, even though what he did was invasive and definitely not allowed, I don't think there's much you will ever be able to do about it. My advice would be cut your losses, take some gratification in the fact he's most likely a complete deadshit, and move on :)

In my time I've seen some very very good security personnel defuse some potentially disastrous situations. I've also been witness to cruelty and situations which have been escalated out of control due to the actions of thugs.

There's far more times that I've come home from events without even noticing the security besides at the door when I entered. It's just a shame that the bad ones are so memorable, and the good ones are invisible because they do what they're meant to do without being in your face unless you deserve it... because they all get a bad rep, like police.

Spot on BT. I know a large number of security personnel and 90 percent of them are nice, kind law-abiding people with a difficult job to do. And then there's that other 10 percent who steal, shag underagers, take speed at work, chuck guys down the stairs because they're tweaking and generally ruin it for everyone else. The decent bouncers hate these guys because all it does is make their jobs harder :(

It never hurts to smile at security! They are (burly) people too.

I completely agree with aunty establishment, I also know a large number of them...they get stereotyped just like everyone else does...

If anyone goes to [edited] here in Sydney, the security staff there are soo nice, they are like the coolest blokes on the planet, they are polite, friendly and even crack jokes with you, its soo nice to have people like that especially for a day club, when uve being partying all nite and just want to chill out at the day club, and having nice people like that just makes it so much more enjoyable

Cheers to them, I wish they were everywhere!!

i generally hate bouncers. I'm now banned from my local pub because i made a police statement after a bouncer through me into a wall. He had been being a smartass on a power trip for several weeks before hand to a friend and i. Changing the so called closing times. Originally starting at 3am ("sorry, cant let you in, we're closing"). We acted surprised saying the pub used to be open till 6am. He told us this had never been the case. (blatant lie). we left and came back next week at 2am.. "sorry we're closed". "but you told us to come back this time last week and we could get in" "nah, sorry, come back at 1". riiiiiiiiight

came back the 3rd week at 1 and he told us "nah, sorry, we're closing now". i asked to speak to his manager, and BAM thrown into a wall. had massive bruising all down my back. ironically enough, a police patrol car pulled up, and me being drunk asked them how to make a complaint etc. they told me to go to the cop station the next morning when i was sober. so i did, and i made a statement. the police officer said he'd look into it.

low and behold, 3 weeks later (a reasonable cool down period i thought), i try to go back in, and now i'm banned!

bouncers are just the most annoying people around. Granted i've seen a few nice ones.. but seriously, the majority seem to be complete assholes.

at a certain event last year i was caught bu a bounce with an assortment of "stuff" whilst entering. the bouncer said to me (quote) : "you know you're not supposed to have that stuff and the police are over there, (50 metres away) there is the bin, but its your choice what to do." me being the smartass i always am asked if i could take the most of the stuff and pretend it never happend. he said no probs chief and took a decent sized bag of powder. :( :'( i had no salt for my cramps all night but still had my other stuff. hahahaha:D

I see a range of Bouncers from some clubs here on the Gold Coast and from up Brisbane and actually know some personally as well. From clubs to raves and dayclubs.
Honestly I reckon it has a little to do with where you actually going or what your attending. Niteclubs generally have the worst of the bouncers in my opinion especially here on the coast.
Their generally a suspicous surly bunch who are only keen to pack as many bodies in as they can. The main problem (and I am working of word of mouth - reliable word of mouth that is) is that some of the clubs here (and their security) have a funny relationship with the heavies in the drug scene. IE the bouncers watch who is coming in out looking for unsanctioned dealers. They have their own internal protected network for distribution of gear and their job is almost as much to protect that as it is to prevent any problems with the crowd. I have even been told some of them are paid more by the dealers than by the niteclub...or in some cases (probably not an uncommon one) the club is owned by dealers.

Raves and dance parties usually the security is there to prevent problems for the owners of the venue or the promoters. They want you to have a good time cause the punters are what pay their wages but you can understand they also have to try and walk the line of at least attempting to follow the law. IE they dont want people walking in with pounds of chemicals. Their generally a friendly bunch who tell you to have a good nite and they just spend their time watching out for all the punters to make sure no one is in trouble....

Dayclubs can tend to be very seedy but its more the patrons than the security who are seedy. I can name three clubs of the top of my head and the security at all of them are pretty cool. They tend to keep drunks out cause they dont want any drunken arguments inside or the fights that result. I wouldnt attend two of the clubs buts that cause of the crowd the attract...versus the other one I almost have more fun then when I actually niteclub!!

To each their own and everyone has lots of varied experiences...just thought I would share my thoughts... :)

I can back this up about Gold Coast nightclubs..
Last Friday, at a certain night club a friend was told by a bar chick that the manager wanted to get on or something. ANyway he went to the manager of security accidently and asked if they wanted to buy some pills. He dragged him up the stairs and another friend went over to inspect whatw as going on, just asked what happened, the the same dude asks if that was his friend. He then pushed him up the stairs and out the door too.

At the same place I've also been someones face bleeding when waliing back to the club after a drop (NOT what u wanna see!!).. I was asking around what happened.. and someone said the bouncers at [club I was going to] smashed him with baseball bats.. I asked around for a bit more and apparently he had a shit load of meth on him.

Yet they know that I'm fucked on somethign when I walk in and out of the club wide-eyed, bopping my head with a water bottle in my hand.

I certainly know of a huge club in a miscellanious city where distribution is so closely linked to security / club regulars the owner would HAVE to know...

Heh.. interesting.. Are security allowed to check anywhere in the club for "dangers" ? Because they seem to come into the toilets at a particular club every 5 to 10 minutes, check the tap area, then the piss area.. Then they even open cubicles while ya taking a piss (or eating a pill) whatever... Bit of an invasion of privacy?

Actually... as BT has said... What security are allowed to do and what they do is a huge difference... and they normally get away with shit. A mate of mine was bullied around by security and punched in the gut and head because he wouldnt stop hassling them at a local club because he got kicked out for satcking it twice. And at that same club, a black fella I know was getting told to fuck off by bouncers.. so he pushed one or something.. just klinda being a cunt i guess in general... but yeah, they said come round the back if ya wanna complain the the manager... and 3 or 4 of them ended up fucking him up with baseball bats.. weird thing is... theres a cop shop less than 100m away from that club.... wonder whats going on... corrupt fuckers.

I went to a event on the weekend, this big female bouncer checked my pockets, but she didnt "look" inside my pockets, just "feel" the pockets if you know what I mean. I didnt mind that, I mean what happens if they let people walk in with some weapons or something? That same female bouncer ALWAYS checks my pockets, I mean "feeling". Weird, she must didnt like the look of me. *shrugs*

im guessing they are more than welcome to give you a patdown of somewhat... this would be checking for weapons and objects that could inflict pain. But when it comes to a having ur wallet searched and everything else, i think that is a different story.

Depending on the venue, bouncers are usually half decent, they are very egotistical, because they have the power they use it, and because 9/10 of them are wired, it is easy for them to kick the fuck out of a punter or 2 in a few seconds, im sure, if u were in a group of about 20, lets say for a bucks night, and the place u were at only have 5 secca's i bet they wouldnt try to start anything with u...

i work in a shitty pub, but out security are have full security licenses and all that shit. I asked them about our rights and what they can and cant do...

They are allowed to ask us to EMPTY our pockets, while they do a beeper test on us, but they are not allowed to actually PHYISCALLY lay a hand of us, that includes pat downs and so on. When it come to checking your wallet, that is invasion of privacy, they have no right at all to check your wallet, so if they ask to see into your wallet, you so NO, its against ur rights, FUCK OFF, of course in a gentle way, maybe just ask why. if he says anything like, Coz i wanna see how much drugs you have, you say no, ur not allowed, he will then probably kick you out of the line, but i have been told if this ever happens, just to take down his number, and report to the pub/club/venue manager immideitaly.

They can refuse you entry, they don't HAVE to let you in.

I'd be willing to take not being alowed into a club (I'm not a huge fan of them anyway) to test whether they would let you in if you refused.

Probably not :D

I recently went to this popular day club in sydney where i found the bouncers to be quite resonable. This was my first time at this particular club,so i didnt know what they were like.On entering he made me raise my arms amd ran the metal detector over me, he then begun to feel my pockets. He then stuck his finger in my small change pocket and felt my pill.He asked me how many pills i had on me,my reply was 1,[1 in my gut,1 in my pocket].He then told me to take a walk down the side lane and hide it in my sock, which i did[heart pounding].I did what i was instructed to do, walk back to the entrance, he smiled and said have a great day.So i guess there not all bad.

I would object strongly and vocally to a security guard putting their hand in any of my pockets, particularly the small change pocket.
