Can MDMA trigger a schizophrenic episode?

There are a few people with schizophrenia in my family, and though I've dropped e and smoked plenty of marijuana without incident, I'm just wondering if there is any evidence supporting the notion that it can cause entrance into a schizophrenic state.

I've also read some articles talking about MDMA as a remedy (though I suppose brief) for symptoms of schizophrenia, out of curiosity does anyone know anything more about this?
 
Yeah it was originaly inteded for use for schizophrenia and other mental problems. Never has got the proper research funded to look more into it though.
 
I thought that when Alexander Shulgin introduced mdma to psychotherapists it was going to be used as a way to treat those who were suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome. I have never heard of mdma being used to treat Schizophrenia.

I have heard that mdma usage can trigger underlying psychological disorders, I will see what I can find to back that up.
 
I was told by a doctor that if I continued to use drugs like ecstasy/speed I would develop symptoms relating to paranoid schizophrenia.

The difference between a poison and a cure is the dose.
 
I personally don't think that mdma will cause you to develop schizophrenia if the issue isn't already underlying.

There isn't any research that has been done to prove this sort of thing, it's only speculation at this point.
 
Well hopefully you're right :)

(Though apparently my schizophrenic aunt seems to think drugs brought her disorder to the point it got to...but then again, she's crazy :P )
 
I'm not sure, but most likely pot, some psychedelics, and some opiates...(given that it was the 1960s)

theres testimonials in there from schizophrenic patients who were given MDMA and recieved great results
maybe i'll type them up later
 
My friend is diagnosed schizophrenic/bi-polar (told to me by his mother.) He has a family history of schizophrenia. I remember in high school he was completely normal. But probably a year or two after we graduated he just lost it. He is completely 'out there' now. He did do alot of drugs (weed,mdma,lsd), and thats all he seems to talk about, so that is what I attributed this 'weirdness' to. But then his mom told me about his mental issues. She said at one point he just snapped. She explained to me the family history, but that drugs had definitely exasperated his condition. Its like he's stuck in a time warp. He just repeats the same stories over and over again. This story about how he took acid 2 years ago and how he's never been the same since. Well every year it will be 2 years ago. He's just stuck. He also told me that he smashed his computer because whenever he looks at it he sees naked people on the screen (and no, he's not watching porno, its really not funny.) Lots of crazy shit that kids told me. I really feel bad for him. I straight up gave him my XBox so he'd stare at that thing instead of the damn walls all the time.

Anyway, just because nothing has happened yet, doesn't mean it wont in the future. I'd be careful.
 
Pure MDMA might effect you if schizophrenia runs in your family or if you have it,

Street E, cut with speed and meth and other fun stuff does have an effect, for sure, without a doubt in my mind.

If schizophrenia runs in your family and your doing drugs as long as the drug is psychoactive your putting your self at risk.

If you already have schizophrenia you might be giving your self a hard time in the future if you use drugs.
 
I find alot of your posts interesting. Are most of you speaking out of textbook here or just stuff you people have made up in your head?

I've been diagnosed with schizophrenia 3 times now in the past 6 years. And yes.. i'm still young at 20 years old. The question was.. can MDMA cause schizophrenia? I don't think so.. but can it bring some stuff out of you that was being suppressed for a while.. I think so for sure.

For me I don't think MDMA has made anything worse.. infact.. after hearing about how it was used in research with schizophrenia I used it as a tool. I can honestly say that I think MDMA has made me understand myself alot more and be able to control alot of my actions. I'm not as hostile anymore.. i'm becoming more social.. I'm learning to love life alot more. I think MDMA has changed me for the better.

Well amphetamines can definitely cause lasting paranoia (citing the example of my half brother) that can resemble the paranoia that paranoid schizophrenics experience...

"He just repeats the same stories over and over again." No offense, 2oclockbeanfiend.2, but that doesn't sound like schizophrenia at all...neither do visual hallucinations...

As I don't having any pre-symptoms of schizophrenia, and there is no convincing research either way, I'm not going to worry about taking e once in a while...Thanks everybody :P

There are so many factors that can contribute to how MDMA can or will affect someone in the long run that it's impossible to base your assumptions on its effects on just your personal experience. Just because it has subjectively benefitted you doesn't mean it's going to do the same for someone else with a similar diagnosis. Similarly, just because MDMA has apparently triggered schizophrenic-like episodes or symptoms in others doesn't mean it'll do that to everyone.

Personal biological and psychological conditions and tendancies, frequency of use, effects of polydrug use, and countless other factors that we can't quantify come into play. The most reasonable conclusion anyone can come to seems, at least to me, to be that MDMA use, just like use of any psychotropic substance, can cause latent psychological disorders to emerge, or at least psychological disorder-like symptoms to arise temporarily in some people.

The safest bet is to simply not abuse the drug. It seems very rare that these problems arise from moderate use.
 
Mdma no, (if not abused heavily) anyway..
Speeed the other hand will and most likely trigger some sort of permanent (Hope not) or long lasting paranoia schizophrenia like symptoms.
hopefully you can get the real deal of MDMA not meth/sppeeed cutted x pills.
Dont know if it would matter that much though..
just stay away from day'weeks long speed binges.

I cant confirm any of that but personal experience so dont take it too seriously.
 
I had a full blown psychotic episode that lasted 3 weeks after taking 1 hit of LSD, i was scared of drugs for the next 10 years.

Read up and decided to take E. Have taken literally 100's (might even be 4 figures) and have never felt any sort of mental breakdown.

By the way my brother is paranoid schizophrenic so i think we have a susceptibility to psychosis, but mdma certainly did NOT cause this, in fact in definitely helped my day to day anxieties.

He was talking bollocks to scare you. The number of people developing schizophrenia has remained constant for the last 100 years. If drug use caused people to develope schizophrenia then the number of people with schizophrenia should have exploded over the last 30 years - it hasn't, it's remained exactly the same. It's bullshit. Pure and simple.
