Because I don't think criminals should profiteer from their punishments for any reason. So what if it's a dungeon of a jail? It was no secret about their harsh drug laws and she was still convicted of breaking them. She's lucky she's walking out of there at all.
If, by some miracle, it came out that she was, beyond a doubt, innocent, then I wouldn't care if she sold her story. But that's not the case.
Do you have an issue with someone profiting from the sale of cannabis? I assume you don't, and if that is the case then it seems like a pretty arbitrary distinction to me to say it is fine to make money selling a drug, but it isn't fine to make money from telling your story of being locked up unjustly for selling the same drug. Perhaps you do have an issue with someone profiting from the sale of cannabis, if that is the case then your view is less surprising to me.
I don't really agree with people who commit crimes that actually deserve to be crimes making money out of them, but people sentenced for drug crimes are victims as much as anything. They might break the law knowing the possible consequences, it doesn't change the fact they aren't doing anything morally wrong but the Government is by taking away their freedom regardless. To my mind they should take anything they can get out of being locked up for using or supplying a drug.
Teological I never said cannabis is harmless, I said it is one of the least harmful and possibly the least harmful recreational drug and I stand by that. I think the fact it has never been linked to a death and has so many medicinal uses lend some credibility to that statement. Amphetamines and psychedelics can easily cause psychosis, cannabis is not perfect, but it does not create mental illness, it just exacerbates pre existing conditions. You can get psychosis from meth if you stay up too long, doesn't require a pre existing condition or anything.
Obviously for anyone pre disposed to serious mental health issues smoking cannabis is a bad idea, you would have a hard time convincing me that there are any real recreational drugs out there that people in this position should be taking though, so I really don't understand how that point alone makes cannabis more dangerous than anything else.
I have smoked cannabis for 11 years currently, in that time, a very high percentage of people I consider friends would be daily cannabis users. Currently, of all my close friends, not one of them is not a daily cannabis user. I have honestly never known anyone to suffer psychosis from cannabis use, methamphetamine is a different story however. I don't say this to try and suggest that incredibly few people suffer psychosis from cannabis, as I wouldn't pretend to know what the exact figures are, but it is worth pointing out while your anecdotal experience as someone who doesn't know that many drug users might be you have met 3 people to suffer psychosis relating to their cannabis use, I have known a LOT of drug users and none have suffered such a fate.
You might not always know if you are pre disposed to mental illness, a lot of the risks associated with drugs apply to some people more so than others though, and they are seldom aware of that fact before suffering through the negatives, and example would be addiction, some people are a lot more predisposed to addiction than others but many of them wont realise this before acquiring an addiction. I don't want to downplay the dangers of psychosis, but when you stack the relative lack of dangers associated with cannabis use against the dangers of many other commonly used illicit drugs in comparison, and especially when you consider that many of those other drugs can cause psychosis as well, it is hard not to argue that it is one of the less harmful drugs overall imo.
