Schapelle Corby will celebrate freedom 'with a joint', says former lawyer Kerry Smith

Gets 20 years in a country which is very tough on drugs, gets out in 9, doesn't snitch and gets 3 million deal. Fairytale shit.

I wonder who'd try to smuggle heroin into Afghanistan. It reminds me of this.

Numerous foreigners were also jailed in the years leading up to her arrest for smuggling drugs into Bali for domestic consumption - hash, cocaine and meth (yes, meth, in Indonesia - that's waaay more Afghanistan-esque than pot). Also, the marijuana in Bali is reputed to be very poor quality and plenty of journalists in the area at the time reported that there was a market for high quality buds in Bali, both among the tourist scene and also among the elite Javanese playboys who holidayed there.

And if anyone thinks that the story being sold for a reputed $3 million is going to be the verifiable truth when she is in parole until 2017 and at risk of going straight back to jail if it was revealed that she was guilty - well, let's just say I wouldn't be accepting it uncritically.

I wish we had a Son of Sam law here. $3m for her story is bullshit.

I agree it is an astronomical figure, I truly can't believe the play this story has gotten in the press the last week, or honestly even since she got busted 9 years ago. The truth is that Westerners smuggle drugs every day, this case is a little controversial and unique but I don't think it is anything special.

Don't really get why you would support a law to stop her making any money from this whole ordeal though? Even if you believe she is guilty (I personally do, although I do wonder if the weed was meant to come out of the bag before she got to Bali) 9 years is a long time to lose your freedom in a fucking dungeon over a plant that has been used medicinally for thousands of years, and that is the true bullshit here.

I am shocked she would be paid $3 million but I also don't grudge her it one bit, after the hell she has been through at least some good fortune is coming her way. I don't really get what anyone could have against that, especially assuming you agree that cannabis is one of, if not the least harmful recreational drug and should be legalised.

We already have such laws - http://www.caslon.com.au/crimeproceedsnote3.htm#literary

Problem is she's in Bali, not Queensland. No jurisdiction. And apparently the Indonesia is somewhat more reasonable about a person's business after they've left jail and don't have any such laws. No Murdoch-owned media either. Coincidence? Probably but, you know, just sayin'...

Because I don't think criminals should profiteer from their punishments for any reason. So what if it's a dungeon of a jail? It was no secret about their harsh drug laws and she was still convicted of breaking them. She's lucky she's walking out of there at all.

If, by some miracle, it came out that she was, beyond a doubt, innocent, then I wouldn't care if she sold her story. But that's not the case.

But if you wont to go by their laws then she is allowed to profit from it over there, apparently (within reason)

I agree with legalizing drugs and all, but the claim that Marijuana is the least harmful drug is one that I believed in, and after almost a decade of use, now hate it when I read it. IME and IMO it is one of the most harmful due to ONE effect it may have. In predisposed individuals it will and DOES cause psychosis, and in some cases it is permanent. I have seen 3 people lose their shit on Marijuana (how many people do I know that do drugs? not that many), and one is on anti-psychotics to this day. I have also had marijuana induced psychosis and it was not nice. I also know people who have smoked everyday for 20 years (very envious :() and they are fine, so YMMV, but is it worth the risk? That is where the danger lies.

I can not smoke it now, one puff and it is off to the chases. Sure it is least harmful in perhaps WD, social problems, addiction and overdose (impossible) wise, the symptoms of psychosis that can appear solely because of Marijuana use (in most people it goes away once Marijuana use is ceased), albeit in predisposed individuals, is a big enough harmful symptom that should warrant it to be deemed possibly very harmful. You will not know if you are predisposed. My family has 0 people in it with any psychosis type disorders, and I have a massive family. I can do any other drug, bar Marijuana. Meth I can go for a few days. Anything else is fair game hard on. I would of been better off having an IV heroin addiction than a Marijuana habit, had I known I was going to get psychosis. It just kinda crept up on me....took a while to see my symptoms disappear, they stayed whilst I was SOBER.

I never have had true psychosis from marijuana but I know it's possible in some people with predisposition. I have definitely had my share of paranoia, anxiety and panic attacks from it, which is why I no longer use it. I find your statement saying that it would have been better if you had an IV heroin addiction to be completely ridiculous. I am a recovering heroin addict and I can say without a doubt that you cannot compare marijuana addiction and heroin addiction. Heroin changed me as a person to where I don't think I will ever go back to being how I was before. I think about heroin everyday and I have been off it for over 16 months (only relapsed 4x in the last 3 years). Heroin can make you do things you would never normally do and can change your lifestyle completely, not to mention it kills a lot of it's users compared to other drugs. Marijuana isn't for everyone, that's for sure and it's not completely harmless, but to compare it to heroin in anyway is just ridiculous.

^ I think this is a stupid argument. If heroin was legal, there would be no problems.

If people don't like it, don't use it. If people don't like pot, don't use it. If people don't like alcohol, don't fucking drink it.

Do you have an issue with someone profiting from the sale of cannabis? I assume you don't, and if that is the case then it seems like a pretty arbitrary distinction to me to say it is fine to make money selling a drug, but it isn't fine to make money from telling your story of being locked up unjustly for selling the same drug. Perhaps you do have an issue with someone profiting from the sale of cannabis, if that is the case then your view is less surprising to me.

I don't really agree with people who commit crimes that actually deserve to be crimes making money out of them, but people sentenced for drug crimes are victims as much as anything. They might break the law knowing the possible consequences, it doesn't change the fact they aren't doing anything morally wrong but the Government is by taking away their freedom regardless. To my mind they should take anything they can get out of being locked up for using or supplying a drug.

Teological I never said cannabis is harmless, I said it is one of the least harmful and possibly the least harmful recreational drug and I stand by that. I think the fact it has never been linked to a death and has so many medicinal uses lend some credibility to that statement. Amphetamines and psychedelics can easily cause psychosis, cannabis is not perfect, but it does not create mental illness, it just exacerbates pre existing conditions. You can get psychosis from meth if you stay up too long, doesn't require a pre existing condition or anything.

Obviously for anyone pre disposed to serious mental health issues smoking cannabis is a bad idea, you would have a hard time convincing me that there are any real recreational drugs out there that people in this position should be taking though, so I really don't understand how that point alone makes cannabis more dangerous than anything else.

I have smoked cannabis for 11 years currently, in that time, a very high percentage of people I consider friends would be daily cannabis users. Currently, of all my close friends, not one of them is not a daily cannabis user. I have honestly never known anyone to suffer psychosis from cannabis use, methamphetamine is a different story however. I don't say this to try and suggest that incredibly few people suffer psychosis from cannabis, as I wouldn't pretend to know what the exact figures are, but it is worth pointing out while your anecdotal experience as someone who doesn't know that many drug users might be you have met 3 people to suffer psychosis relating to their cannabis use, I have known a LOT of drug users and none have suffered such a fate.

You might not always know if you are pre disposed to mental illness, a lot of the risks associated with drugs apply to some people more so than others though, and they are seldom aware of that fact before suffering through the negatives, and example would be addiction, some people are a lot more predisposed to addiction than others but many of them wont realise this before acquiring an addiction. I don't want to downplay the dangers of psychosis, but when you stack the relative lack of dangers associated with cannabis use against the dangers of many other commonly used illicit drugs in comparison, and especially when you consider that many of those other drugs can cause psychosis as well, it is hard not to argue that it is one of the less harmful drugs overall imo.

I agree with opi8.
Also, if pot is so sinister, teological - it's a good thing you and your friends didnt indulge in (any number of) potent psychostimulants available to drug users nowadays.
Cannabis may have adverse, lasting effects in those susceptible, but methamphetamine, MDPV and a host of others are capable of creating true psychosis in individuals not genetically predisposed to such things.
Dissociatives carry a risk with this, along with a bunch of other compounds.

Cannabis strains grown with selectively higher levels of CBD than THC are regarded to have anti-psychotic properties.
Mental disturbances from weed are more likely to be caused by an unregulated industry (not flushing nutrients prior to harvest, etc).
Not all cannabis is the same. Not that I'm denying it has risks...but I'm now in my 17th year of being a regular cannabis user (daily for many years of that; less frequent now) and I've not experienced any of the problems you describe. Nor can I think of anyone who has been so unfortunate - and I've known a heap of pot heads over the years.
Just my 2c.

Edit - seems I was writing this at the same time as d_m and we made a bunch of the same points.
Anecdotal evidence is one thing...scientific evidence (which admittedly is wildly contradictory at times re: cannabis) is another.

Guilty or not I think she deserves a pay day after 9 yrs in that shit hole. Judging by her family even if she was involved in trafficking they are hardly ballin big players. If she was just another guy trying to make a quick buck smuggling into SE Asia then there wouldn't be even a $20 interest in her story. Being a pretty young girl with a bat shit crazy family made her story compelling enough for people to pay for her to talk. If anyone should be ashamed it should be the Australian public who idolize criminals like Carl Williams, Ned Kelly and Schapelle.

The whole proceeds of crime laws are a desperate attempt to punish criminals who flaunt their celebrity. If you are smart enough it isn't that difficult to funnel any such proceeds into safe bank accounts of friends you can trust.

I like seeing and hearing about people like David Koch get all worked up about her profiting off all this. I find it really funny. Some of the comments on some of the media articles people are absolutely spewing and throwing anything and everything at it to say how bad all this is, that a convicted drug smuggler (from a corrupt country, with a very poorly handled case) is making any money off it.

Yeah if she was a guy and didnt have the colourful, crazy family that she does I'm sure all this wouldn't be worth much money or interest, but it is, people keep trying to run it down, but the fact is people talk about it and discuss it and want to know what really happened. And ask 5 different people about it and I bet you get a few different replies at least. Everyone wonts to have a say with what they think happened.
