It's brown because some lazy-ass backyard hack (I refuse to refer to him/her as a chemist) was too bloody slack to clean it up properly, so there's a bunch of impurities in there.
For the most part, pure drugs should be nice white powders or crystals. Brown means there's crap in there - that someone was too lazy to at least wash the end product to get rid of the obvious junk. Also, leaving impurities in can be a profiteering thing, too.
Generally they're probably harmless, but it's up to you if you're willing to take the chance that there's dangerous crap in there... Bearing in mind the test came back supporting MD(M)A, it's probably ok, but as I said, it's your call.
