Why is salvia so unpleasant and scary to smoke?

Pins and needles anyone? Hellish shamanic revelations?

Should I stick to DMT? Or is there a useful means for salvia we are missing?

I liked it, plenty of people do. It's a strange drug, not something I'd rush to do often, but it has treated me well in the past. With a well made extract, even just a 5x, there isn't much nasty smoke to inhale, 2 fast hits & I'm gone. I got a strong body high, giggles, or at higher doses I'd black out, but never anything 'hellish'. It felt refreshing, like a long intense trip compressed into 5 really intense minutes.

I needed too much raw leaf to get any strong effect from it, need a lot of leaves chewed for a long time, they don't taste good either, it lasted longer & I got a little body high off it, but it never got to be a proper trip with chewing raw leaf (dried & rehydrated first, I haven't tried homegrown fresh leaf). Don't swallow the leaves or it'll make you sick, it's not oral dosing, the idea is to absorb it through your mouth, I think buccal is the correct term.

I also found some headshop '20X extract' was no stronger than raw leaf, but some 5X extract ordered from a specialist ethnobotanical website blew me away.

I liked it enough that I'm thinking of growing some, maybe chewing fresh leaves might not be as nasty.

Will do, do you have any ideas on procuring a tincture as opposed to gnawing raw leaves?

I suppose we can procure a liquid form of oral salvia easily enough...

Na. Haven't tried salvia yet. All I know of is people getting by better effects by chewing fresh leaves for about a half hour. Using alcohol to open up the mouth blood vessels as well.

I'm going to stay away from using the word 'pleasurable', but I will say that it can definitely be a rewarding/worthwhile experience. I've only ever smoked it so I can't comment on other routes of administration. I found lower strength extracts, on which I don't breakthrough very easily, can be fun if you're just looking for a laughing fit or for it to compliment other drugs. I've never thought it would be a good idea for me to smoke it when I've taken powerful psychedelics as the confusion could spell the death of a good trip. However, I've smoked it a few times when taking ergine containing seeds and it definitely propelled the trip.

As for stronger extracts and breakthrough doses, I think I have about a 40% success rate in having a wonderful experience, the rest causing partial freak-outs in the best scenarios. Since a plethora of legal and prohibited psychedelics have become much more available in recent years, I haven't even pondered taking it again. I last took it in 2011 and I think that caused a minor episode of freaking out completely. I usually forgo trip sitters but would definitely recommend having someone you trust nearby, but not necessarily in the same room as you.

It does tend towards the neutral or even negative - I think it is best taken as experiential, experimental, interesting; a totally unique vista - all that taken on board it will on occaision gift you with states of pleassure or hilarity or cosmic-ness. Salvia makes no concession to humans. Never sure if I prefer smoke or chew - smoking can give breakthroughs hard to reach chewed

I've had many enlightening experiences on salvia. I believe it was a 5x or 10x extract I would take it out into nature with my bubbler or setup my living room as comfortable as possible and take one big rip and hold it in as long as possible. She's helped me with many problems I've had.

My girlfriend had a very intense experience where she was definitely elsewhere and couldn't respond to me and it scared the shit out of both of us, but she's incorparted the experience into her life and still thinks it was generally not a bad thing.

Use it with a moderate dose of a soft or pure dissociative. In my limited experience with combinations DXM, and probably ketamine, transforms the biting and ripping salvia monsters into gumming and massaging salvia monsters.

My first psychedelic experience 13 years ago was Siebert's salvia tincture and it totally blew me away with profound synesthesia, which was novel at the time, and it was so smooth and not at all jarring like smoked salvia.

It opened my eyes to the power of psychedelics and after this experience my life was never the same. I would like to try the traditional quid method someday in Oaxaca, Mexico. I'm gonna make this happen someday because I have Mexican/U.S. citizenship and there's no reason why I can't, aside from all the narco violence.

I would highly recommend the tincture method, it's way more gentle than smoked and you can actually enjoy the experience. IMHO.

Not a drug of pleasure imho.

I have used it several times and always found it tough compared to other psychedelics. That being said the is learning in it which when integrated is a worthwhile endeavour. The last time I took it I was convinced I was dying - after a frightening start I 'let it happen' and it has become one of the most important trips I ever took.

If I was going for a pleasurable experience go for the likes of Al-lad or magic mushrooms - there is, for me anyway, a lovely euphoria that comes with the mushrooms

I find smoked salvia to be quite pleasurable when done properly. As with serotonergic psychedelics, I found that the only thing causing my experiences to be negative was emotionally resisting them. When I stopped doing so, all the pins and needles and feelings of being stuck and so on disappeared and were replaced by a orgasm-like peaceful glow, and my hallucinations went from chaotic and harsh to sexual and fun. Occasionally the first hit in a session can be kind of jarring and I need to remind myself of these things, but taking multiple hits to adjust myself to it makes it easy again, as does smoking it on something else which is already euphoric. I have not tried a buccal or sublingual method yet, but I have high hopes for them.

I've tried a quid - wasn't overly impressed -felt drunk and wobbly.

Chewing the leaves is one of the traditional ritual methods of taking it, so surely it can produce a full experience when done properly, no? What dosage did you use, and were the leaves fresh or hydrated?

They were fresh off a plant I had grown myself. Can't remember how many I had but my cheeks were full and I found it quite nauseating holding it in my mouth. I thought the fresh leaves were meant to be a more gentler way.

Oh wow, that sounds like quite a hassle for a mild effect haha. Yeah, I know it will be gentler than smoking for sure, but I figured you could at least get something out of it. Maybe I will just stick to tinctures.... I'm curious though, when you were drunk and wobbly, were there even slight visual changes or something behind closed eye? Even just a little bit I feel could go a long way if used in the proper setting, like meditation.

I didn't notice any visual effects and found the whole experience very underwhelming tbh. Only tried it once as I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of it all. If looking for a psychedelic experience I would go for the extracts/tinctures.

I love this plants effects. Pleasurable has been an experience. It's not for everyone though.

While on mxe, vaped 60x salvia, 100x blue lotus, calea and dpt is pretty amazing.

I really like Salvia as it has very unique effects.

And I wish that Australians would stop calling it "Sally" LOL.

Such a bland and benign name for such an esoteric and mystical herb.

Just because they have the same first 3 letters doesn't make it a good slang term for it.

I will be expecting you guys to come up with a better nick name ASAP ;)
