Tennis S&G Tennis Thread v. Straight Sets

Why the hell do tennis players make such obnoxious noises?

And what do you think about it? The family member I live with has been watching tennis for the last few days, and I was cracking up listening to the noises they make. In this video they call it "grunting" but the one player sounds like WOOO!!! WOOO!!! That's not a grunt that's just hilarious. I mean it sounds like she's cheering for her favorite rock band or she's on a roller coaster or something. I don't see why it's necessary.

yeah Ive seen something on tv talking about the movement to reduce it in younger players.

The defense is that grunting loudly tightens the abdominal muscles and therefore allows them to hit the ball harder, sort of like is done in martial arts.

Except most male tennis players dont really grunt much at all and I personally think it solely serves as a way to try and distract your opponent in whatever way you can.

I dont really watch tennis for a number of reasons but this is one of the biggest. gets annoying after a while and rather than support it by giving them my television viewing with the volume off (regardless of how small that is), I just dont watch it.

Its not like they really have much ground to stand on, nobody I know seriously watches tennis and I know some people do but let's be real here, the X Games probably draws more viewers than any tennis event

I read somewhere that it could be to keep the opponent from hearing where the ball lands. If that's the case then that's just bullshit imo, but I have no vested interest I just think it's funny/stupid.
 
^ then take some responsibility for your (plural) own enjoyment and put on headphones, or ask them to wear headphones, or go to another room, or go out or any one of 1000 other simple ways to address the problem?

Uh, I just thought it was funny. I'm not losing any sleep over this, I promise. Golf on the other hand enrages me.
 
no love for the oz open?

i watched the nadal vs. federer semi and was disappointed to see federer run over. i'd love to see him win another major but it's looking increasingly unlikely.

the final between nadal and wawrinka was just a little odd...

Nasal v Federer was an amazing, spectacular feat of athleticism. Rafa is such a powerhouse on the court, I can't believe he won in strait sets. He was at deuce love at least 2 out of 3 of the sets.
I didn't get to see the Nadal v Wawrinka final but it's odd that Rafa mould take 2nd to a man that had never even made a major final before.

This year was full of flukes at the Oz Open, but then again it always is. What's the next televised tournament?
 
Wtf lol... I'm not against combining my thread with this, but now the thread doesn't even make sense due to missing posts.
 
Well why was someone's post removed from my original thread? And I believe one of my responses is missing also.
 
Neither of the ommitted posts contained content that sufficiently expressed any opinion rather than to serve merely as banter.
Deal with it, friend. Constructive posts only, referring to women's tennis as "war cry porn grunts" is unnecessary in this thread.
 
Deal with it? Yeah whatever... No one forced anybody to combine my thread with this one. If whoever combined it found my original thread unconstructive why combine it in the first place? Like I said I don't have a problem with it being combined but deleting people's post first imo is basically just censorship.

What do you guys think of federer's attempt to take up a net game after so many years of it being pretty much abandoned. With the abandonment of a great deal of net play.. then we have people abandoning practicing the skills needed to combat it..

so does net play have a chance still or has this been proven useless by where the game has gone.. because of technology and what not...

Wawrinka is good as fuck. His last couple matches with Djokovic were awesome plus he's prolly got the best backhand in tennis right now. I'm with Ali though as far as Nadal taking the french, has he even lost there?
