I've started working with some runes someone special was nice enough to make and give to me for the holidays. Does anyone have any experience using them or recommendations? Right now I'm basically just drawing one rune a day and learning the significance of it and seeing if I can relate any experiences of the day to it.

What do you plan on using them for?

What do you expect to get out of them?

The only significance these will runes have.... is the significance that you give them.

Might as well be studying dice.

So I don't have to try and look it up what are they. A little tipsy so. I looked it up so I'm cool. Now what you do with them I'm still in the dark. While I'm stuck in edit I'll say this again "This sever bites at the moment."

Learning.

Whatever I can.

That's only half true, they have meanings ascribed to them from ancient Scandanavia. What you make out of the meanings is another story.

Might as well be studying dice.

That's your ignorant opinion.

Runes have no mystical power.

If you truly believe they will do good then you will contribute good things to them.. but those good things would have happened any way.

That's great that you received hand made runes as a gift from a friend. In traditional Norse culture that is very special.

I've worked with runes before, but I ended up moving on to another divination tool.

There are many things you can do. You can toss runes up in the air and see which ones land face up or face down, and then interpret meaning from that. You can select single runes from the bag after asking a question.

Runic magic involves using runes in combination... so when you draw runes and place them in sequence, that sequence has a very specific meaning. But those meanings are not known to me because I did not study it too in depth.

I think whether or not runes have power depends on the practitioner, and one's ability to raise magical power. Runes are also a projection tool, like tarot cards, so you can use them to receive insight into your own psyche.

Nothing to be lost! You just might learn something. There are traditional ways of using the runes. I would suggest you start there.

Good advice... Do you know what a good website would be to get started?

That's what I figure. If nothing else, well I'm learning about something from a long time ago from a badass culture. lol

^ i tend to agree with this.you really shouldn't ask for people's opinions if you're going to get bent out of shape when they give them.

alasdair

Wasn't bent out of shape, but imo comparing runes to dice is indeed ignorant whether you believe they have any special powers or not.

if they have no special powers, then runes and dice are basically the same thing. small, many-sided objects with markings on them.

Except for the whole Scandinavian history and the fact that they were used as an alphabet before Latin.

Place each run so that the symbol you hope for it to land on is face up.. While placing each one think about what you want to do or change, then why, then how, then your desired outcome.. Write down each thing after placing the last rune.

Focus on your goals, you can reach your dreams. I'm living proof. Beefcake. Beeefcake! BEEEEFCAAKE!

Why is everyone being such an asshole? I didn't start this thread asking what people thought of runes, I asked if anyone here had any experience using them or recommendations. If you think runes are stupid why not just keep it to your damn self?

Ok everyone please let's just focus on practical suggestions for how to use runes. If you have nothing useful to add then please be respectful of nuttynutskin's request.

To clarify, I think it's okay to post criticisms about practices involving runes, but outright mockery is counterproductive.

ebola

And to clarify I wasn't mocking the OP; I genuinely believe that my post involving placing the runes how you want them to be to be the most likely to achieve anything.. Although i guess if you are a believer then throwing the runes to randomly land; but then use your own interpretations to twist the outcome into what you wanted, would probably be better.. but the rest of my post I stand by.

The last part of my post started off serious (follow dreams - reach goals) but that just reminded me of an early south park episode (and poster i had as a child) in which Cartman says the exact same thing - Ending it with BEEEEFCAKE.

So again; apologies if the meaning of my post was taken as mockery - It wasn't intended.
