No, I don't think it was the drug issue per se, although the anti-rave ordinance movement probably did affect Mythos' business. Mythos didn't have NEARLY the visibility problem that Midnite had...it was basically shameless open dealing season in Midnite.
In the last 1-2 years it was open Mythos really didn't draw much business except on nights when they had national headliners come in, but when you think about it, Mythos long outlived a typical club lifespan. Most clubs are lucky if they last 5 years or so in the same incarnation...Mythos lasted 11.
I think the main reason Mythos closed was just changing tastes in "the scene". In Mythos' heyday, since it was really the only thing going in town, the clubbing generation concentrated there. I remember recognizing alot of the people that hung there just from seeing them there time and time again, and it almost felt like a "family". You got comfortable seeing those folks...you just knew they were gonna contribute to a great vibe, and that made it even better.
These days, you just don't have a large clubbing element in Charlotte seeking a bona fide club setting. The club generation from 5 years ago has faded away, and that's understandable...people get married, settle down, etc. Nowadays what's left of the old clubber group seems to have shifted to lounge-type venues like Tutto's...us older clubbers can't always get it done as hard or as often as we used to, ya know.
Plus, the club scene in Charlotte these days is diluted with more commercialized/hiphop club venues, and the new clubber groups seem to gravitate more toward those settings like Menage or Crush rather than a Mythos-type club setting. The days of the Mythos-type club generation in Charlotte are gone, I'm afraid.
I don't know when the new venue will open, so the best bet would be to check Creative Loafing every week or so (if you have access to it) for teaser promo ads.
My Mythos heyday was in '99-00, when Mythos was in its prime...I probably went there 1-2 times a month on average during that two-year span. When Mythos was on (and rarely was it NOT on during that time) and Andy K and Tober were hitting it on the decks, that place would just lift off.
I went to the final Mythos night to pay my respects...my first BL journal entry pays tribute to it. %)
Just fyi, the vibe at Sunset on Taboo nights is not bad...there are plenty of couches to chill on, and the music is usually excellent. It's more of a lounge than a classic club though so you won't get the club lights, and I've never seen any "raver toys" there, but as long as you don't show up all candied out, basically advertising your intentions, I don't think anyone would hassle you. The times I've been there it's been a very chill atmosphere...there's some dancing and alot of just chilling, so if you wanna hang with friends and hear some good talent it's not a bad call.
