Hadnt heard it before. But i did stare at it drunkedly for a while at 1am this morning wondering why the hats alternated black/grey/black/grey. Then realised if they didnt it would break the riddle.
My first answer involved the sun and peoples shadows ;)

Riddle me this batman:
Feed me and I live. Feed me drinks and I die. What am I?

But since you never mentioned that we had to rely on just the information you gave - which was that one person had to guess, and they couldn't turn around. thats a silly assumption to make - The person at the rear would blurt out what color his hat was immediately, if he saw the two in front of him were wearing similar coloured hats. Noone likes to be shot at at close range.

I've heard that one a long time ago, and alas, I knew which dude was the one who'd escape, but I couldn't remember the reasoning behind it.

Unless he was a dumb fuck, or simply too scared to answer. If I was standing in position 2, I wouldn't be betting my life on the fact that the guy behind had his shit together.

And they weigh the same, pfff, something harder than a 7yo riddle next time.
