Over the years I've snarfed down Oxycontins, pecs, norcos, methadone, Kadians, MS contins... even ML'd dilaudids. I've taken every benzo out there.... been stoned on large quantities of Marinol....used plenty of adderalls over the years for studying. Other than desoxyn and oxymorphone I've had pretty much every CII drug out there. I've never been a drinker, but I've had my share of alcohol as well (mostly during college). In addition, I've had tons of caffeine and ephedrine, and I've smoked a few cigarettes too (never liked them). However.... somehow (through moderation) I've luckily managed to never become addicted to anything... except oxy.

No... not oxycodone. That stuff is wonderful but I never got hooked on it. I'm talking about oxymetazoline. Afrin nasal spray. I have been hooked on this stuff for about 2 years now, and I can't go more than 6 or 7 hours without it. The other day I went out of town to visit a friend and see a concert. In my haste, I forgot to bring my precious Afrin (the "severe congestion" formula is my fav)... withdrawals kicked in right as the concert started... argh. It was like my nose became plugged shut with concrete. My nasal pasages were nonexistent... it was if I had no nose. Now, I must admit that being unable to smell all the people around me at the concert was far from an insufferable tradeoff... however, as soon as the show was over I had to drive around town trying to find a 24-hour drug store so I could get my oxy (-metazoline) fix. I was gasping for air... fortunately I finally found a place that had it, and I "shot up" right there in the store. *squirt* *squirt* *ahhhhhhHHHH!!!*

Yes, I'm an Afrin junky. I take some solace in the fact that the one substance I'm hooked on is legal, cheap, and readily available... and it doesn't seem to cause any brain damage (although withdrawals could be deadly were I unable to breathe through my mouth). I find it amusing that the most physically addictive substance out there is sold over-the-counter... even to "the children." Anti-drug propogandists will say that you can become addicted to crack/heroin/cocaine/pot/etc with just one use. Reasonable people know that's bullshit. But lemme tell ya... I was physically hooked on afrin after my first squirt. Once it wears off, your nasal passages shrink and become even smaller/tighter than they were before you used it. Once ya start there's no stopping. The only drug I've ever physically craved and the only drug I've ever felt withdrawal from... is Afrin. Unlike opiates, amphetamines, pot, benzos, and barbs, moderation is not an option with this stuff.

That being said... Afrin fucking rules. Sure I need to use it in order for my nose to work, but it never worked that well in my pre-Afrin days anyway. I have always had bad allergies and no allergy meds have ever worked... I've tried them all. I even tried allergy shots which did nothing. Then one day I gave afrin a try and whaddaya know, I could instantly breathe like never before. Truly a great, albeit exceptionally addictive, drug. The impracticability of getting off this stuff really doesn't bother me at all... just so long as I can continue to acquire it cheaply and legally. And don't give me any shit about how it is bad for me... about how it will rot/burn/eat away the insides of my nose/face/head. It's bullshit and I don't wanna hear it. Oxymetazoline nasal spray is wonderful, extremely effective, and completely harmless. Just because something is extremely addictive doesn't mean it's dangerous.

Anyway... just thought I'd share my resolution on what the "most addictive drug" truly is. People always justify the "drug war" by spewing nonsense like "drugs are bad because they're addictive" and "addiction is wrong so drugs are wrong." But I've never once heard anyone claim Afrin use is immoral. True, it's not psychoactive per se... but I sure felt an amazing rush when I took those two big squirts right there in the store at two in the morning and went from having an utterly unusable nose to possessing the clearest nasal passages humanly possible in less time than it takes for an IV of the finest opiate imaginable to hit your brain.
 
phenylephrine? Man you are crazy. After extended use it makes your nose all raw and painfull. But i admit, i have actually felt some CNS activity from it, never thought it was recreational......

My dad was addicted to albuterol, so i suppose its possible.....
 
opiates are the most addictive for me were others have no problems. it's all about the personallity of the user.
 
A good freind of mine was also hooked on Afrin, for about two years. He was in the same place you are, could not do with out or his nose would completely shut down. He went for a checkup at the doctors and told the doc of his concerns, and the doc said he has seen it before with that stuff, and the only way to get off is to stop using it. My friend tried several times over a few months, and then finally he was so sick of having to rely on the stuff to breath through his nose, he stopped using it one day. His nose was completely blocked for two solid weeks, no joke, then it finally started to heal. So know it may take a week or two for you to use your nose again as nature intended. Afrin is no joke, very addictive stuff. Good luck in quitting.
 
Oxymetazoline is just like phenylephrine. In anycase, this person has obviously never been addicted to methadone, because it is nearly impossible to get off this shit.......
 
Negrogesic, I don't see phenylephrine listed as an ingredient in Afrin. Oxymetazoline HCL 0.05% is the active ingredient. They're both vasoconstrictors though.

My nose is not raw and/or painful and I've been hooked on this shit for a while. I've never experienced the slightest bit of discomfort from afrin... well except when it wears off.

Oh, for what it's worth, I've never had coke... so I guess I really can't say *for sure* that oxymetazoline is the most addictive drug because I have no basis for how it compares it to cocaine.
 
Geez, it's so funny that you posted this. My fiance and I were just having a conversation about this the other day. About three months ago I had the flu that everyone was clamoring about and it knocked me on my ass for about a week. I followed that by having a nasty cold. I starting using Sinex, the Vick's brand of the same drug, and absolutely could not get uncongested without it. Not too mention, I positively cannot sleep if my sinuses are clogged, and if I do, I snore like a motherfucker. After about six weeks of using four or five snorts a day, I quit. I remained congested and miserable for about 10 days until I cleared out.

In the meantime, my fiancee has started using it and is now going through the same problems. What's especially weird is that the Sinex brand actually has a mentholatum mixed in that kind of burns your nasal passages, in that "good" way ;)
 
Oh yeah, as for it being completely harmless, I disagree. Try going to the gym or going jogging and you'll realize how constricted your nasal passages have become from regular use. You just can't inhale as much air, and you'll be sucking wind very quickly. I know that is not a major problem for some people, but I thought is was really annoying.
 
I have the problem with not being about to breath well from my nose - I have bad allergies and it's always blocked up. So, if I use afrin and lets say it does make my nose really bad clogged, since im used to breathing through my mouth it wouldnt be that big a deal right?
 
LDopaPDX I exercise regularly and while I ALWAYS take a hit of afrin immediately prior to going to the gym, i've never noticed any breathing problems while working out.

And FWIW, the Afrin "Severe Congestion" has menthol and eucalyptol.... extremely refreshing. Gives your sinuses that "just cleaned" feeling. Also, the "no drip" version sucks... doesn't seem to get up into yer nose very far. The regular spray works much better IMHO.

Now if only someone could discover some oxymetazoline potentiators :)
 
Glad to hear that it doesn't cause you breathing problems, Cold One. You're lucky, though. It was more than noticeable for me. Every time I'd really work out hard I'd start wheezing and it would feel as though every breath I was taking was cold air. Weird, huh?

By the way- oxymetazoline potentiators- interesting..
 
The only drug I've ever been addicted to was carmex lip balm. In 1999 I started taking acutane and it dried out my face and lips. So to get rid of my chapped lips I started using carmex. After 5 months I was off acutane and still on carmex. I tried quitting but my lips became extremely chapped and burned until I used carmex. I just kept using it, 5-15 times a day, for over 4 years. If I didn't have carmex for a few hours my lips turned very red and dry and the skin around my lips would start to become dry and red too, my lips would burn and all I could think about was using. When I finally got some it was the best feeling in the world, going from extreme discomfort and pain to complete moisturization and comfort. Now I'm trying to quit by using less addictive lip balms and weaning myself off, but I keep relapsing. I've been carmex free for almost 12 hours now.

Those symptoms are quite strange... were you breathing through your mouth? Do you have asthma of any sort?

All about lip-balm addiction. According to the site, "[Carmex] is probably the strongest lip balm around... with a rush that rivals crack cocaine when you first apply it." Now, while it's uncomfortable, I can go without lip balm... but i gotta have my afrin.
 
I can't go for more than 3 hours without lip balm, and that is hard to do. I have lip balm in my pocket from the minute I wake up to when I go to bed, and while in bed I always have some within reaching distance. I can't go anywhere without it. Having no lip balm for a long time is one of the most painful things I've ever experienced. They should put warning labels on this stuff.
 
nose spray is so bad for you....... In the long run it does more damage then good. I used to use the spray all the time but then i would stop and wouldn't be able to breathe for a week. But when u need to use your nose u will do anything to get it uncloged.
 
so your getting a little dopamine rush from giving means to reward yourself via unclogging your nose all the time??
 
i'm addicted to biting my nails - any nail-biters out there? how good does it feel when you rip off the tip of that freshly grown nail? i'm in heaven for that split second..
