there's many good picks (most of which i agree with) here already, so i'll try to add some that haven't been mentioned as yet...

belle de jour - 1967
i've ranted about this before, but it's the most sumptuously beautiful french film (directed by bunuel, starring deneuve), about a conservative-on-the-surface young lady who turns her sexuality inside out. it's very weird, but an amazing film.

the elephant man - 1980 (i guess this doesn't really count but :p)
lynch at his best.

fantasia - 1940
to think that this is sixty-four years old is just astounding. it's as good now as it was the first time i saw it.

ladri di biciclette - 1948
as real as any film gets.

les quatre cents coups (the 400 blows) - 1959
imo, this is truffaut's greatest work.

rope - 1948 (okay, most of hitchcock's stuff is worth seeing)
his best film, imo, filmed entirely in one massive shot. and it's not *just* a gimmick - it's an excellent study in human behaviours and motives.

bronenosets potyomkin (battleship potemkin) - 1925
the introduction of montage.

chronique d'un ete (chronicle of a summer) - 1961
i just like french films, and this one's soooo pretty! =D
