The Seventh Seal
Metropolis
Apocalypse Now
Citizen Kane
Casablanca
The Seven Samurai
Roshomon
2001: A Space Odyssey
Dr. Strangelove
Vertigo
The Birth of a Nation (racist claptrap, but a piece of film history nonetheless)

I've been really getting into a lot of old films recently myself. Some of my all time favourites are:

Meet Me In St. Louis-1944
The Misfits-1961
Easter Parade-1948
West Side Story-1961
Jason And The Argonauts-1963
Suspiria-1977

I picked what I liked from everyone else's list and added a few more...

I love old movies. So much so that I'll happily watch average b&w flicks when they're on late night tv. A couple more that spring to mind:
Bullit
Breathless (French version)
Red River
Gida

Just a few from the shelf.

The realm of the senses

9. Gods of the Plague
10. Killing of a Chinese Bookie
11. Pixote (1981, sue me.)
12. Band of Outsiders

15. Once Upon a Time in the West
16. Shoot the Piano Player
17. Five Easy Pieces
18. La Strada

(Greatest movies ever.)

Just see all the Billy Wilder films, some French and German "new" cinema, Kubrick, couple Bogart pictures, some Eastwood, westerns whatever, Brando, James Dean, Steve McQueen, Lana Turner, blah blah blah ... that should cover it. ;)

Throne of Blood - 1961

I'm a Samurai flick buff if you couldn't tell %) Thank god for IFC's Samurai Saturdays!

Have you seen the Lone wolf and cub : Baby cart films?
There is a few of them and they are the best Samurai films i have ever seen.
The films incorporate manga like effects with awesome results.=D
