I thought at first that the benzoyl functional group came from local anesthetics since cocaine itself actually carries this functional group. But i noticed the heterocyclic alcohol also occurs in some of the tebanicline family of pyridyl ethers. E.g. A-84543 or Pozanicline (secondary amine in this case).

If you want to know about local anesthetics containing a benzoyl group (not the PABA used in dimethocaine) consider Eucaine (alpha and beta), Amydricaine, Amylocaine, Cocaethylene, Elucaine, Hexylcaine, Isobucaine, Meprylcaine, Rhinocaine.

This goes some way to explaining why the expected action at first was local anesthetic (sodium channel blocker but not typically DRI with the occasional exceptions) but also finds a basis of how nicotinic receptor affinity can be rationalized.
