I know a really good book was written called Rasmussen, N. (2008). On speed: The many lives of amphetamine. New York University Press.

I read a related book called 'Blitzed' which if anything is closer to the US experience but compressed into just a dozen or so years.

Obviously every nation involved in WW2 provided some varient of amphetamine to it's armed forces but further up the chain it was opioids all the way.

I suggest a much more interesting take is the Swedish experience of phenmetrazine. It went from OTC to [P} to {POM] to a total ban in under a decade.

The crazy thing is that exactly the same thing happened in Sweden two decades before with amphetamine!

All I know is that when phenmetrazine was banned in Sweden, boy did the smugglers get rich.
