it's not about driving.
the premise is mainly just a simple character driven journey of 'personal discovery' told via a love story narrative.

the biggest failure of the movie imo, is the title. as most people who've watched it here and commented have already said.

also, the blonde chick was pretty lovely. most engaging female in a movie I've seen for ages. amazing mouth. and she didnt look numb from botox either

As far as I was concerned, when I went to watch it, it was like Bullit or something. I was expecting a slightly Steve McQueen looking character to be charging about in a car for 75% of the film, running from or to something. I didn't care what. The start of the film pretty much confirmed this by banging on about his crazy souped up car that looks like a standard - whatever the most common car in America is (Impala?) - & having a cracking wee car chase after his "Five Minutes" monologue. Thought "we're on to a winner here!". I thought wrong.

If I'd been expecting something different then I might have had a different opinion. In fact, I'm almost certain I would have. Anyone I know who's seen it & wasn't expecting it to be primarily about high speed car chases has said it's great.

After watching it I felt kind of cheated. Conned even.

everything you just said summed up it up exactly. had so much potential

when, where, how? was that in the promo ad or summat?

I just found out there was a Ryan Golsing movie ooot and went to see it. Never looked into what the movie was about before going because I hate spoilers

Ryan Gosling is like the best actor to appear since De Niro imo. Saw him in The Believer when it came out and knew he'd be awesome forevermore. and he has been. consistently.

he's turned into a bit of a feminist icon since too, surprisingly

he's a bit spechul as far as actors go, like

MSB said it. They marketed it wrong. I didn't read loads about it beforehand, just saw the trailer for a movie called Drive. It looked like a cool as fuck car chase film, something there hasn't been for decades, so I was kinda hyped up for that. They clearly did that deliberately. There's going to be millions more people heading out the cinema to see "FAST CAR GOES FAST, CHASING SOMETHING OR BEING CHASED BY SOMETHING" than "PLANK OF WOOD RARELY GETS IN A CAR & SPEAKS ABOUT 3 TIMES".

Re those Gosling photos - "Hey Bentshot, my perfect Saturday is a hot cup of tea at sunrise... thrown into your stupid fucking face as I'm breaking into your house to shite on your expensive rug for wasting a couple of hours of my life watching you wandering about doing PRACTICALLY NOTHING when you should have been bombing about in that souped up Impala, defying the laws of physics at least once every 10 minutes & maybe shooting the odd cunt. You fucking prick!"

I don't see why he gets applauded for his acting in that film. I wouldn't necessarily have considered it bad if folk didn't go on about it being good. That made me think about it & realised that I hadn't really noticed any acting, there was just a guy standing there most of the time. I'm pretty sure most people can pull of "Stand over there for 2 minutes mate, then walk to here" quite convincingly.

I've just also realised that I didn't really mind Drive when I first saw it. I was disappointed that it wasn't what I was expecting but thought it was OK. The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to think it was proper fucking pish. I'll need to watch it again.

this.

ryan golsing's getting laid by hawt chicks tho

lets not forget that

[edit]

I also said this. first. let's nawt forget that also damnjoo

So? Plenty of total dickheads are rich, famous & "getting laid by hawt chicks". Doesn't make them any less of a dickhead. (I know nothing of Ryan Gosling btw, just making snap decisions based on this one movie, I can't even think of seeing him in anything else. I think he might have been plank #202 in Boardwalk Empire but he's not credited on IMDB so I can't be sure).

& fair play, aye you did say that. I missed it, as well as your question about where was the big deal made of the car, the speech etc. Not necessarily in the promo stuff, might have been, I can't remember. But...

NSFW'd for very minor spoilers.

NSFW:
at the start of the fucking film!!! As far as I can remember (& my memory is a bit hazy at the minute, it is Sunday after all & far too many joints have been consumed today) the movie pretty much kicks off with the guy telling him about the badboy engine he's put in the Impala as requested & making a point of telling everyone watching that this is so it looks like any other car but is fucking rapid. Shortly after that great emphasis is placed on the "You have 5 minutes of my time..." speech. At some point either during this or very soon after we get a brief glimpse of a car chase, like a little teaser of what's to come. From that alone you expect the remainder of the film to be him in this rapid motor, with a 5 minute window to wait on someone else committing some sort of crime, then it's his job to charge about like a maniac in the fast car getting them away from the crime scene. Pretty basic shit.

That, however, did not happen. The whole getaway driver thing is completely redundant in my opinion. What's the point in that at all? It's used for one thing, to try to get the daft bird's man out of trouble. Any number of plot options could have been used there other than "Aha, REMEMBER FOLKS! This guy is a master getaway driver!" Which in my mind just adds further support to my theory that that is only in the film because if you show the right clips, say the right selective things about the movie, then it is infinitely more marketable to the movie-going masses than what it really is if you remove the getaway driver element & give it a different name. A bit of an arty, indie, probably half decent if taken at face value film with an overall good but occasionally incredibly fucking irritating soundtrack. One that certainly isn't going to get general release, nevermind make megabucks at the box office (again, I don't know if Drive did well or not but it's safe to say that it did better than it would had they not played on one incredibly tiny, ultimately meaningless, bit of the fllm.

Seriously, think about this film if he wasn't the "incredible getaway driver" he was just the "quiet neighbour who wanted a shot of that bird". It's the same film really, just sounds dreadful. I can imagine the original script hitting some guy's desk & it being sent back to the writers "Needs more cars, guns or sex or the studio are binning it".

I don't like cocks. ryan gosling is pretty sound character wise and not a hollyweird pretty boy as far as I can tell. and that's the reason i like im

his choice of roles in movies attests to greatness

IMDB for The Believer:
A young Jewish man develops a fiercely anti-Semitic worldview. Based on the true story of a KKK member in the 1960s who was revealed to be Jewish by a New York Times reporter

s'great first major movie role. decent flick, but awesome acting on his part. he pulls the nazi punk racist role off to a tea

Marmalade's The Believer mention reminded me I watched American History X sometime around Christmas, don't see it mentioned here and it is excellent. About a young neo-nazi, who happens to be quite intelligent and an influence on those around him, and ends up in jail where he has to confront his - and others' - racism in a more concentrated environment.

There is one particularly violent moment but it's done for good reason and over quickly. The rest of the film is just really really good.
