Recommend more good movies per post

Ok so I finally watched :

I knew the basic plot but not the style. Fuck me this is how films should be made! The hand held scenes are not piss take vomitcam like many pseudo-documentaries and the long takes are fantastic. I like long takes so much more than stuff thats edited to fuck eg Michael Bay shit thats 100 edits a minute at times There are quite a lot of scenes that just play out naturally and go on for a minute or so before cutting, a couple of 3-4 minutes show pieces and one 454 seconds...nearly 8minutes that had me open mouthed. I know they were spruced up post-production but I was INSIDE the film because real life is all one long take, not cut,cut,cut,cut.. The preparation that went into that stuff is beyond anything I can conceive of
Putting together a list of films with long takes in for lovefilm list. Some arthouse films use them to show how in the real world not much happens and thats fine but more than a few films like that gets dull. 5+ minute takes where loads happen is just amazing....imagine if the Omaha Beach scene in Saving Private Ryan was done without cuts...that would be the shit!

Don't think I've seen the film but Clive Owen is such a shit actor, I hate watching him. Does he not spoil the film?

As for films with long, outdrawn scenes have you seen In The City of Sylvia? Has lots of that going on. Very interestingly shot but not a particularly exciting film, a bit pretentious really so you'll probably love it.

It has two really cool scenes in it, one being the scene on the tram and the other in the nightclub which I really liked but aside from that it's very slow moving. Definitely the sort of thing I reckon you'll like though.

Children of Men is a superb film one of my favourites of the past decade for sure and one of the most beautifully shot things I've ever seen, Owen is decent in it.

I have to admit that quite often I can't notice whether an actor is good or not. I don't know if its slight autisticness or what?
Loads of films have people over acting eg Jack Nicholson in everything post Shining.... or Nicholas Cage in almost everything....
And then there are the non-actors such as many in the wire or the little boy in There will be Blood who I can tell aren't trained at all and look very uncomfortable in front of a camera.
But I couldn't tell you if Clive Owen was anything other than an ok actor. I don't have a problem with him in anything I've seen him in.
People just seem to get Oscars for very obvious performances especially those involving mental illness, addiction and any other form of handicap.
If someone acts in a way that I don't believe then I think of them as bad actors or if they seem very aware of the camera.

Anyway I've got some Bela Tarr films on my list, one of which is 7.5 hours long and has maybe 150 takes in total in it! May be some time before I can prepare myself to watch that though.....his idea is that it should be watched all in one go Fucking Hungarians are insane

I've been reading up on Sátántangó and I have it on my lovefilm list, but obviously its impossible to sit there for 7.5 hours straight. I'd attempt it and see what occurred.I managed to watch Inland Empire all the way through, straight through and its 179 minutes long.
On Thursday I watched:

It has the most famous long/tracking shot ever to open the film, which I'd seen 5 times before. This time I watched it all and thought it really is worthy of the term classic, although not for the plot, but the camera and lighting work. Yes it had many longish moving shots, which prepared me for Children of Men.

The whole Mexican gang and talk of mary jane and mainlining....and the hairpiece..and Charlton Heston is in no way believable as a mexican and the plot is filled with stupidity...
Its got some great lines, but a really average film is elevated so far above the norm by its style.

I've seen Mongkok but I was drunk and can't remember enough its on my hard drive and I keep meaning to rewatch it.
Last week watched this for the 2nd time, although the first I was absolutely fucked and couldn't make head nor tail of any of it!

Tried watching it in Chinese and English as they are both dubbed anyway and the English version has way more realistic fight sounds instead of the trademark screams and animal type noises However the Chinese version has a more funky soundtrack. Wiki says its got loads of cuts that appear to be lost now...
Anyway soon I'll watch it with the commentary as Bey Logans Asian commentarys are very informative.

This was my favourite film in my upper 6th in 1994.

Absolute classic. Picked it up on VHS recently at the market - comes with a nice lil short that I've not seen elsewhere but is probably on a DVD somewhere.

Plz do. T'is a great character building thriller. And I find a lot of the films released through Asia Extreme are more style over substance. Oftentimes that's just what you need, but other times I wanna bit of character building God dammit.

I fookin' love Bruce. Always have done, always will. But I have to say, this is the one I've seen the least. Enter The Dragon was always my personal favourite. An obvious choice, but whatcha gonna do?.

In fact I have never seen enter the dragon all the way through. My intro to Mr Lee was Dragon, the Bruce Lee story. A while after I was talked into watching Game of Death....and whoa that was strange when the not-at-all Bruce turns up!
Theres way more plot and acting in Big Boss than I expected. But perhaps if I saw the original cut it would be more like my expectation.
Never understood the appeal of Jacky Chan.
Tell me about some martial arts films that are actually worth watching, either because they are proper good or are fucking hilarious..possibly unintentionally!
I've got Kung Fu Hustle on dvd, but thats a bit new-school!

Early Jacky Chan stuff is great, BB. Drunken Master is a bit of a favourite. Not quite martial arts, but the Lone Wolf & Cub films are excellent. Shogun Assassin is good in terms of dodgy dubbing and edited highlights but the original six films are classic.

I used to like a lot of the stuff he did in the 80's. A lot of humour (slapstick) type stuff combined with death defying stunts. Nowadays he's a bit of a joke imo. Totally sold out, and there's nothing I hate more than a sellout.

Wheels On Meals is a good one. Many LOL's to be had as far as I can remember. It's been some time.

If it's proper shite, funky 70's soundtrack, ridiculous plots type of thing you want, then take a look at some of the Bruceploitation films. Another favourite genre of mine. :D

Another hilarious, yet fantastic one is China O'Brien (1 and 2 are equally as good/bad). Cynthia Rothrock ftw. :D
