the shield felt very hollywood and watered/dumbed down to me after the wire, 45 min episodes, glossy as fuck, no proper swearing or nudity...

Well I'm still going to watch my box set when it comes. And one day I shall procure the Homicide boxset. Genesis of the wire part 1, including how a major channel can fuck with your programme from top to bottom and it still be decent.
Fucks sake I like Law & Order Criminal Intent. It aint the wire, and so what.
Might get some desoxy and watch the whole of the shield;)
Wire vs Shield is like oranges vs pears, good things about both. Wire season 2 is to me the best TV programme ever after Twin Peaks season 1, but I'm rubbbing my hands in preparation for my marathon.....assuming it actually comes.

PS I never liked The Sopranos at all apart from the one time I watched it on mushrooms.

I prefer Casino to Goodfellas, I prefer The Godfather to Part 2......I loved Deadwood 1 + 2, yet still haven't got all the way through season 3 as I got bored.

Anyway I don't know whether to watch where the wild things are.

But are you gonna see it with me?
It currently costs me £10 return to Londres on the train!
I'll be the one at St Pancreas who looks more fucked than everyone else combined.....or suicidal, depending on the day/date/time..........

Potentially you have now made me watch it as I think my sisters husband hs them all.
I wish they had kept the sets and made a couple of 2 hour episodes to clear up business.

I have to admit to being an addict of Molly Parker though I sort of preferred her when she was addicted to Laudanum.
Fuck it while I'm on the subject of fucked up Molly...

The poster is obviously made to make you think Keira is all over it. She has an important part, but it was one of the ones she made before Pirates of The Carribean and then highlighted when that made big money.
I thnk this is a really good study of heroin addiction and it introduced me to Molly and I can't wait to watch some of her other stuff

^I could punch Keira Knightley. Smug bitch.

Caught a bit of this ages ago and was like, "wtf?!". :D

T'is truly a bizarre film which causes muchos confusion. Just got it on DVD as I didn't realise it was available and I simply couldn't resist. :D

The Toxic Avenger.

IMDB Review said:
Lacklustre direction by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, a goofy script (by Joe Ritter), truly poor FX and even worse acting all add up to, for some strange, abstract reason, a stupidly enjoyable film experience.

Maybe it's the camp sounding music, the over the top (and in some cases *way* over the top) 'acting', or perhaps it's just the fact that it's so unashamedly weird and downright cheesy that makes it such fun to watch, who knows? Whatever the reason this definitely isn't a film to spend long hours contemplating such things, instead just sit back and enjoy the crazy show.

Performance wise, as already mentioned, none of the actors give even remotely decent performances, with the exception of Andree Miranda who's actually pretty good in her role as Toxie's blind girlfriend. All of the other actors are so far over the top (or indeed just so downright terrible) that by films end they too have somehow managed to take on their own distinctly cheesy charm and add greatly to the whole 'so bad it's good' motif.

As I may have mentioned once or twice before 'The Toxic Avenger' is cheesier than a block of cheese factories, and as such it takes a special type of person to enjoy 'this type of thing', however for those with their tongue planted firmly in cheek, and for lovers of schlock cinema and 50's z-grade monster movies this is a must see. For most everyone else though it's probably best avoided and will most likely induce headaches and annoyance rather than belly laughs and amusement. Which of the above descriptions best suits you I'll leave you to decide for yourself.

Harry Brown.

Excellent movie with Michael Caine going all vigilante on his housing estate.

that looks fucking excellent. did you go to see this at the cinema? ;)

btw, i think i preferred The Shield to The Wire. both were absolutely brilliant, but i think The Shield takes it. never before or since have I seen a cop series with such an enjoyable cringe factor, making you wonder OMG WTF are they going to do next? :D

i really must watch the last few series of The Shield.

Watched this Woody Allen film last night featuring Larry David:

Being a huge Curb Your Enthusiasm fan I <3 Larry David, I also like Woody Allen, really enjoyed it, couldn't stop laughing :D (yeah I was stoned, but still, it was good)

Avatar :) - visually amazing movie not that much new in story lines but your too busy being amazed at the visuals to care.

Try Lessons of Darkness on MDMA. How many other documentaries about the burning oil fields in Gulf War I are so beautiful they move you to tears? Maybe try it in the Film Recommendations thread though ;)

/Herzog Appreciation Society

try and appreciate herzog's bad lieutenant remake :D

bad times

Moved film talk to film thread. Good call on Fitzcarraldo - truly epic. Aguirre goes without saying of course. And Nosferatu. And Stroszek. And... well... just about any film or docu he's ever made really. Man's a genius. He also got shot in a random drive by in the middle of a BBC Culture Show interview which was rather bizarre.

EDIT: Ha! Just spotted that in his filmography. Didn't realise it was a remake. I'll bet another of Spade's balls I still like it though :D
