Reason(s) for rave club shutting down

Hi All,

Recently a very well known rave club shut down here in Adelaide, Last satnight to be exact. Not naming names but I think Adelaide BL'ers would all know what I'm talking about.

My theory on this club closing down is because the shortage of mdma beans around. As I've noticed the people attending this nightclub dropped dramatically when good googs stop showing around the place. And as crowd died, the club suffered a slow painful death. 8-10months down the track now its finally had its last breat and call it quits.


What I want to find out is, is this same phenomenon happening around other states in Australia??????

If so please do tell.
 
I think it is...

Here in Brisbane we've lost the Arena in the end of 08, Planet finished up their club nights earlier in the year and last month Rockafellas closed down..

Its a sad state...
 
I think everywhere would be feeling ...


Rise in drink prices
No smoking inside/lack of easily accessible and comfortable smoking areas
Rise in violence (possibly somewhat related to MDMA shortage)
Rise of bunk and shit drugs
People getting their jollies from monthly festivals rather than clubbing weekly

It's just a major shift in whats 'cool'.

Through the early part of the decade, the rave scene was pretty fringe. It was very out there, and not really that closely intertwined with the normal, club, drink til 2am, go home type thing everyone else was doing.

It exploded, and a lot more mainstream guys got onto the scene. In melbourne, if people remember - before we had "Future Music Festival" it was known as "Two Tribes". Whilst this wasn't the greatest event on the yearly rave calendar, it quickly gave rise to commercialization, and multi-million dollar events. Which in turn turned the industry towards more lucrative ideas, that instead of running events that rarely actually make cash (most of the larger international club nights). The promoters ran HUGE commercial events once every few months, and a super large one once a year.

The decline in MDMAs prevalence has a lot to do with this IMO. Back when MDMA was all the rage, people didn't care so much about $$$ as they did about having a good turn out, and in-turn using that to promote.

I think melbourne has maybe 3 rave clubs left, Bubble, Majik@Room, and 3D. Bass Station and all that are relics of a forgotten age.

Whilst i don't get alot of the cheesier hard trance and hardcore i like at teh big events, they do often get some big uplifting trance names in, at least their music gets me goin. I don't know how long it will be until trance completely dies out to the more commercial electro stuff on everyones lips. I think the decline in MDMA is even more evident here.

Yea man it's happening to a club in Perth. The Rise, it used to go off back in the days Of MDMA being good quality but now that there is none around and it's turned to shit so has the club it's just died in the ass over the last year.
 
I feel this is going to turn into a nostalgia thread =D One of my last few memorable nights was Transmission at The Arena in Brisbane which is now shutdown as Ashstorm said :(. A combination of numerous factors which were mentioned above all contributed to the demise of numerous nightclubs, to add lockout times and all that rigmarole as well. All of it is just over "regulated", the majority of teenagers have to sell an arm and a leg to go out. I'm over that now anyways the occasional doof I'll go to, they're the only thing the government haven't seemed to touch.
 
Interesting thread. I'd never made the connection before but it seems to make sense, especially as ppl report it happening all over :\
 
Yeah I made this theory up a while back when mdma became rare/scarce. And Judging by other people comments I'm fair on the ball on it. Its sad really.

Most people say, "its all about the musik man, i come here for this sik sik musik dude, i really love it blah blah blah, but do you got any pills bro?"

I'd be epicly sad if trance really dies off and electro takes complete control :(

Well those seven guys are not enough to sustain a club it seems. ;)
 
I don't think it being 'about the music' and needing drugs to sustain the scene is contradictory. The two go hand in hand, it's part of the overall experience.

A rave without MDMA is like a bar without alcohol. Sure, you could still go there and talk shit and have fun, but it's hardly the same experience.

The growing focus on the 'festival' scene probably hasn't helped either.

As for the specific Adelaide club in question, I think their issues with promotion and management had just as much to do with the club having to close down as the lack of good drugs. Attendance there started dropping off back in 08, when there were still decent pills to be had. I guess it remains to be seen which direction they take the venue in when they finish renovations and re-open with the new name in a couple of months.
 
good thread headah, i went to the final party on saturday, actually it was a pretty decent night in town. allround adelaide has sucked completely for the past 12 months and i believe it is to do with the lack of mdxx.
you go to adelaide and the clublife is dead, everyone is boozed up and ready to punch on and worst than that the night ends at 3 AM
sad enuff this is the future and its looking worst and worst, many people using meth as an alternative, me for one but it just aint the same.
i still believe dodgy drugs is the reason adelaide biggest rave ended up coming to a halt, miss those days, all night, out doors, and not knowing the location till couple of days b4. most people from adelaide would know what im talking bout.
 
in melbourne its happening all over the place....first phd a few weeks ago, infekted closing up this weekend, pharmacy died last year, bass station came back but pretty sure its gone again, defcon melbourne being cancelled....

while some may have come outright and said it (defcon) and others blame closing on 'poor attendance,' there is one thing to blame whether anyone wants to say it or not: juice. i blame G for the death of everything.....and from what i've heard melbourne is by far and away the worst city for G in australia, if not the world....
 
G has been big in Melbourne for the good part of this decade, so i don't think G is actually the problem of melb scene dieing off bro. Since the early days of Bass Station, I've seen posters up on walls inside the club when it was at twister/palace saying DONT DO G etc etc etc.

ANd yes Mistee that last night was off the hook. it felt like what it was like back in the day when it was a popular rave club. Sad to see it go though def. When the last track ended, I really didn't want to leave the club. Afterall its our stomping ground for the last 4-5yrs :( :( :(
 
sure is headah... prob fukin seen u pleanty of times in town even possibly ripped up the floor next each other haha.
just a real shame this one has closed considering there isnt really any clubs to take its place, i mean there are pleanty of clubs, just they all play electro and have the same bunch of fukwitt people.... in saying that i can do electro but i must be 'altered'

Clubs have a tendency to just come and go, barely any will last more than 2 years. Scenes shift and so do crowds and trends, you'll find the people who run most nights will shut them down in order to establish a new night with basically all the same fundamentals, just at a different venue with a different name.

Drugs, whilst being an ultimate decider on whether a night with be great or amazing, won't often be the reason for a club to shut down. With the decline of anything with see the rise in something else. Plenty of other drugs have filled the gap for MDMA in Melbourne, at least, the past few months.
